Book An Engine Not a Camera

Download or read book An Engine Not a Camera written by Donald MacKenzie and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2008-08-29 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In An Engine, Not a Camera, Donald MacKenzie argues that the emergence of modern economic theories of finance affected financial markets in fundamental ways. These new, Nobel Prize-winning theories, based on elegant mathematical models of markets, were not simply external analyses but intrinsic parts of economic processes. Paraphrasing Milton Friedman, MacKenzie says that economic models are an engine of inquiry rather than a camera to reproduce empirical facts. More than that, the emergence of an authoritative theory of financial markets altered those markets fundamentally. For example, in 1970, there was almost no trading in financial derivatives such as "futures." By June of 2004, derivatives contracts totaling $273 trillion were outstanding worldwide. MacKenzie suggests that this growth could never have happened without the development of theories that gave derivatives legitimacy and explained their complexities. MacKenzie examines the role played by finance theory in the two most serious crises to hit the world's financial markets in recent years: the stock market crash of 1987 and the market turmoil that engulfed the hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management in 1998. He also looks at finance theory that is somewhat beyond the mainstream—chaos theorist Benoit Mandelbrot's model of "wild" randomness. MacKenzie's pioneering work in the social studies of finance will interest anyone who wants to understand how America's financial markets have grown into their current form.

Book Seventy Years of Railway Photography

Download or read book Seventy Years of Railway Photography written by Colin Boocock and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colin Boococks' railway photographs are already familiar as they have been featured in a variety of railway books and magazines. This book shows around 300 of his favorite images that illustrate the many different aspects of railway photography. The key seven chapters in this book each cover one decade from the 1940s up to the present day. Not only do they display the early improvement in his photography as he gained experience, they also bring into focus how much railways have changed over the last seventy years. Grimy steam locomotives in smoky surroundings persisted in ever-reducing pockets as more modern forms of traction spread across our railways. Working steam finally disappeared from UK main lines in 1968 and around coal mines in the mid–1980s.The later chapters benefit greatly from Colins' worldwide travels, in which he searched for more unfamiliar railways. The growth of heritage railways also features.Useful appendices add insights into Colins' experience of camera technologies and photographic techniques. These emphasize the changes that have faced him as his photography has moved from black-and-white to color, and from films and darkrooms to the computer and the digital age. Colin last used film in early 2004, having embraced digital photography with enthusiasm.

Book Modelling Engine Sheds and Motive Power Depots of the Steam Era

Download or read book Modelling Engine Sheds and Motive Power Depots of the Steam Era written by Terry Booker and published by Crowood. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many railway modellers include an engine shed somewhere on their layout. However, all too often the shed is squeezed into a quite improbable location and is little more than a place to 'park' engines when they are not in use. This well-illustrated and comprehensive book, written by an experienced railway modeller, helps even the beginner to develop a far more realistic approach and to capture the unforgettable grimy but exciting atmosphere of the locomotive shed in the steam era. The book covers all types of engine shed from the branch line sub-shed to the main line motive power depot, and discusses research, planning, the building process, readily available materials and simple tools. It goes on to explain how to obtain the very best from kits, how to site and operate sheds, and how to make them look authentic. It demonstrates the construction of over a dozen kits, including off-the-shelf kits and the newest computer downloadable kits, and shows the modeller how to create special dioramas depicting the whole shed scene and how to scratch-build complete sheds, including coal stages and other infrastructure. With further advice for those with a limited amount of space, and 'top tips' throughout, this is essential reading for modellers of all abilities who wish to incorporate a realistic locomotive shed of the steam era into their layout. Well illustrated with 323 colour photographs.

Book Western Region Steam Locomotive Depots

Download or read book Western Region Steam Locomotive Depots written by Laurence Waters and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the opening of the Great Western Railway in 1838 through to the end of steam traction on the Western Region in 1965 the ‘engine shed’ formed an important role in both the infrastructure and operation of the railway. As the Great Western system expanded so did the need for larger locomotive servicing facilities and from the 1870s right through to the 1930s many sheds were rebuilt into larger locomotive depots or in some cases replaced by entirely new structures Nationalisation of the railways in 1948 saw the formation of the ‘British Railways Western Region’. Apart from a few early sub-shed closures the number of Western Region steam depots and sub-sheds remained almost unaltered until the regional boundary changes of 1958. Using black and white and color images from the Great Western Trust archive at Didcot, the book illustrates Western Region steam depots and ‘sub sheds’ that were in operation in the mid 1950s. With many previously unpublished photographs the book should interest modellers, historians and enthusiasts of the Western Region. Today the unique atmosphere of the steam ‘shed’ can be still be experienced at Didcot, where the original 1932 locomotive shed forms the centrepiece of the Didcot Railway Centre.

Book The East Coast Main Line 1939 1959 Volume 2

Download or read book The East Coast Main Line 1939 1959 Volume 2 written by Peter Tuffrey and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2022-07-02 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • The first detailed study of this huge mainline through its operational history • Features extended commentaries from the authors, rich in detail • Superbly illustrated with black and white photographs, many never seen before In this second and final volume, the whole of the East Coast Main Line between King’s Cross and Edinburgh Waverley stations is examined closely, with a particular emphasis on the ways and structures: the line, stations, connections, yards, and other physical features. Interposed are accounts of the traffic at the principal stations – including connecting and branch line services – with observations on changes over the period 1939 to 1959. Some emphasis is placed on freight traffic on account of its importance and, perhaps, its relative unfamiliarity to the reader. The lines, stations and many other elements are described as they were in August 1939, but as some plans on which they are based are dated before the late 1930s, there may be marginal differences from the precise layout in 1939.

After that, you’ll learn all the necessary steps to bring the character into UE5 and set it up for animation. Then, using an iPhone and a webcam to capture face and body movements, you’ll mix these motion capture files, refine the animations using the MetaHuman Control Rig, and save these takes to be reused and edited again within the Level Sequencer. On top of that, you’ll learn how to create a rendered video file for film production using both the Level Sequencer and a VR Cinematic Camera. By the end of this book, you’ll have created your own MetaHuman character, as well as face and body motion capture data, and learned the necessary skills to give your future projects further realism and creative control. What you will learn Create your own bespoke character using MHC Develop custom faces based on real people Utilize Blueprints to take control of your digital character Retarget animations using the Unreal Mannequin Use DeepMotion and Live Link for complete body and face animation Use the Control Rig to refine animations Export and render your character Who this book is for This book is for filmmakers and hobbyists who are planning to make a film using Unreal Engine for the first time, having worked in live action or purely digital media previously, either professionally or as a hobby.
