Book Engine Installation Effects of Four Civil Transport Airplanes

Download or read book Engine Installation Effects of Four Civil Transport Airplanes written by U.s. Department of Transportation and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the effects of airplane geometrical configuration on the acoustic directivity characteristics and on the propagation of airplane noise. This effect of airplane geometry is referred to in this report as “engine installation effects.” Engine installation effects are one of the components of lateral attenuation. Lateral attenuation in the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Integrated Noise Model (INM) has been based on the methods described in the Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) Aerospace Information Report (AIR) 1751. Released in 1981, SAE-AIR-1751 is founded on data measured in the 1960s and 1970s. The Boeing B-727 airplane, which has an engine location not used on more modern large civil transports, dominated these measurements. Long-term measurements conducted with airport noise monitoring equipment have shown that the lateral attenuation algorithms in SAE-AIR-1751 tend to predict too much attenuation for modern airplanes.

Book Effects of Engine Emissions from High Speed Civil Transport Aircraft

Download or read book Effects of Engine Emissions from High Speed Civil Transport Aircraft written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The AER two-dimensional chemistry-transport model is used to study the effect of supersonic and subsonic aircraft operation in the 2010 atmosphere on stratospheric ozone (O3). The results show that: (1) the calculated O3 response is smaller in the 2010 atmosphere compared to previous calculations performed in the 1980 atmosphere; (2) with the emissions provided, the calculated decrease in O3 column is less than 1 percent; and (3) the effect of model grid resolution on O3 response is small provided that the physics is not modified. Book Noise Mapping in the EU

Download or read book Noise Mapping in the EU written by Gaetano Licitra and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noise mapping is the first tool to effectively assess noise exposure, communicating information to citizens, and defining effective action plans for protecting citizens from high noise levels and preserving quiet areas in urban European Community environments. Indeed, strategic noise maps are now required in the European Union for all population centers of more than 250,000 inhabitants, as well as for major roads, railways, and airports, and are becoming required for urban areas with over 100,000 people. Providing a comprehensive reference guide for students, researchers, acoustics consultants, and environmental agencies, Noise Mapping in the EU: Models and Procedures shows how to integrate data with geographical information systems, improve accuracy in model and prediction software, and assess different methods and descriptors for evaluating annoyance and noise exposure. It offers guidance on regulations, communication processes, physical aspects, and application of noise mapping, as well as on communication processes for citizens involved in decision making. Beginning with fundamental concepts in acoustics and a presentation of legal frameworks for noise mapping in Europe, the book covers all the main issues about noise mapping. It presents numerical models for roads, railways, airports, harbours, and industrial sites. The chapters are written by European experts from a range of research institutes, companies, and environmental agencies. Using a practical approach and worked examples, the text discusses control and uncertainty in input data and output results, technical recommendations from working groups, and the Good Practice Guide (GPG) tool. It provides in-depth coverage of geographic information system (GIS) techniques for noise management and the evaluation and management of noise exposure, and concludes by reviewing noise mapping experiences in Europe, communication to the public, and future perspectives for mapping the effects of noise.

Book Gust load and Airspeed Data from One Type of Four engine Airplane on Five Routes from 1947 to 1954

Download or read book Gust load and Airspeed Data from One Type of Four engine Airplane on Five Routes from 1947 to 1954 written by Walter G. Walker and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the results of an analysis of approximately 100,000 hours of V-G data from one type of four-engine civil transport airplane to determine the magnitude and frequency of occurrence of the gust loads and gusts. The data were obtained during routine operations from 1947 to 1954 on five different routes. The normal accelerations for each of the five operations may be expected to exceed the value corresponding to the limit-gust-load-factor increment, on the average, twice (once positive and once negative) within the range of 5,000,000 to 22,300,000 flight miles. A derived gust velocity of 50 feet per second was exceeded twice within the range of 600,000 to 1,900,000 flight miles. The gust loads of the present operations were less than the loads experienced by other four-engine civil transports previously investigated, but the differences are not significant. The present data indicated only small differences due to seasonal effects and different operational utilization.

Book Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research

Download or read book Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary human activities that release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere are the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) to generate electricity, the provision of energy for transportation, and as a consequence of some industrial processes. Although aviation CO2 emissions only make up approximately 2.0 to 2.5 percent of total global annual CO2 emissions, research to reduce CO2 emissions is urgent because (1) such reductions may be legislated even as commercial air travel grows, (2) because it takes new technology a long time to propagate into and through the aviation fleet, and (3) because of the ongoing impact of global CO2 emissions. Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research develops a national research agenda for reducing CO2 emissions from commercial aviation. This report focuses on propulsion and energy technologies for reducing carbon emissions from large, commercial aircraftâ€" single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft that carry 100 or more passengersâ€"because such aircraft account for more than 90 percent of global emissions from commercial aircraft. Moreover, while smaller aircraft also emit CO2, they make only a minor contribution to global emissions, and many technologies that reduce CO2 emissions for large aircraft also apply to smaller aircraft. As commercial aviation continues to grow in terms of revenue-passenger miles and cargo ton miles, CO2 emissions are expected to increase. To reduce the contribution of aviation to climate change, it is essential to improve the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and initiate research into new approaches.
