Download or read book An Historical Syntax of the English Language written by Fredericus Theodorus Visser and published by Brill Archive. This book was released on 2002 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study is to provide an outline of the development, from the earliest times to the present day, of all the English syntatical constructions with a verbal form as their nucleus. Professor Visser's description is based on a very extensive collection of documentary material covering every kind of writing in prose and poetry in the Old, Middle and Modern periods, drawing on quotations illustrating syntactical phenomena in Bosworth & Toller, O.E.D., M.M.E.D., E.D.D., and D.O.S.T., but also making reference to obsolete usages not found in any grammar, and to the views of English and American grammarians of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries on the various syntactical constructions. The volumes of this work originally appeared in the early sixties and seventies and were well received by readers and reviewers. Volumes 1 and 2 underwent correction in the light of these early reactions. We should like to think that this work will continue to be available to the scholarly world without great increases in the price. We are however only reprinting the individual volumes in small numbers, and so we have decided that in order to guarantee a consistent reprint and pricing policy for the future, the work should be available henceforth only as a set of four volumes.

Download or read book Syntactic Theory and the Structure of English written by Andrew Radford and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-07-10 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Radford's textbook is written for students with little or no background in syntax, and introduces them to key concepts of Chomsky's minimalist programme (e.g. merger and movement, checking, economy and greed, split VPs, agreement projections), as well as providing detailed analysis of the syntax of a range of different construction types (e.g. interrogatives, negatives, passives, unaccusatives, complement clauses). Illustrative material is drawn from varieties of English (Standard English, Belfast English, Shakespearean English, Jamaican Creole and Child English). There is a substantial glossary and an extensive integral workbook section at the end of each chapter with helpful hints and model answers, which aim to get students to analyse phrases and sentences for themselves within a minimalist framework.
Download or read book English Syntax written by Charles H. Hargis and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2008 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is remarkable that children learn all of the syntactic structures described in this book and with no instruction. Most children have mastered them by the time they start school. However, learning a language is subject to critically sensitive age restraints, and learning a second language becomes increasingly difficult as children age through this zone of sensitivity. Therefore, the goal of this updated and expanded edition of this book is to provide teachers with a detailed explicit knowledge of the syntactic system and the order in which it is learned. The material is presented clearly and simply, but this is not the way it should be taught to the English language learner. The knowledge in this book is strictly for teachers, and it will enable them to assist their students in acquiring a more natural implicit understanding of the English language. Topics include: Syntax in Language Acquisition; Sentence Classes; The Auxiliary; The Expanded Auxiliary; The Determiner System; Nouns; Pronouns; The Negative Transformation; Prepositional Phrases; Phrasal Verbs; Indirect Objects; Yes/No Questions; WH Questions; What-Do Questions; Transitive Verb Complements; The Passive Transformation; Possessives; The There Transformation; Relative Clauses; Noun Modifiers and Clauses; Nominalizing Transformations; Cleft Sentences; Adverbial Clauses and Conjunctive Adverbs; Adverbs; Comparative Constructions; Participial and Absolute Phrases; Cause and Effect; Conjunctions; Exclamations and Commands and Direct Address; Direct and Indirect Discourse; Word Order Transformations; Anaphora; Syntax for Basic Math and Science Instruction; Assessment; Methods; Special Difficulties; and Samples and Analysis. The Appendices and Bibliography provide additional assistance.
Download or read book The Syntax of Spoken Indian English written by Claudia Lange and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth analysis of several features of spoken Indian English that are generally considered as 'typical', but have never before been studied empirically. Drawing on authentic spoken data from the International Corpus of English, Indian component, the book focuses on the domain of discourse organization and examines the form, function and distribution of invariant tags such as isn't it and no/na, non-initial existential there, focus markers only and itself, topicalization and left-dislocation. By focusing on multilingual speakers' interactions, the study demonstrates conclusively that spoken Indian English bears all the hallmarks of a vibrant contact language, testifying to a pan-South Asian 'grammar of culture' which becomes apparent in contact-induced language change in spoken Indian English. The book will be highly relevant for anyone interested in postcolonial varieties of English, contact linguistics, standardization, and discourse-pragmatic sentence structure.

Book excerpt: The future of English linguistics as envisaged by the editors of Topics in English Linguistics lies in empirical studies, which integrate work in English linguistics into general and theoretical linguistics on the one hand, and comparative linguistics on the other. The TiEL series features volumes that present interesting new data and analyses, and above all fresh approaches that contribute to the overall aim of the series, which is to further outstanding research in English linguistics. Download or read book The syntax of early English written by Olga Fischer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a guide to the development of English syntax between the Old and Modern periods. Beginning with an overview of the main features of early English syntax, it gives a unified account of the significant grammatical changes that occurred during this period. Four leading experts demonstrate how these changes can be explained in terms of grammatical theory and the theory of language acquisition. Drawing on a wealth of empirical data, the book covers a wide range of topics including changes in word order, infinitival constructions and grammaticalization processes.
Download or read book Introduction to English Syntax written by Rolf Kreyer and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of basic syntactic categories, analytical methods and theoretical frameworks that are needed for a comprehensive and systematic description and analysis of the syntax of English as it is spoken and written today. It is therefore useful for students of the English language but also for teachers who are looking for an overview of traditional syntactic analysis. In addition, the book explores various related aspects, such as syntactic variation, the relation between syntax and semantics, and psycholinguistic approaches to syntax. One focus throughout is to introduce the reader to the 'art' or science of syntactic argumentation. Almost all of the examples that are found in this book are drawn from language corpora - each syntactic concept, therefore, is exemplified by authentic language data.
