Book excerpt: The recent CTA workshop on ‘facilitating next-generation ACP agriculture through youth entrepreneurship, job creation and digitalisation’ identified seven critical success factors for successful rural entrepreneurship and job creation: access by youth to investment and finance, scalable approaches and models that can be taken up, enabling policy environments for youth, agriculture that is attractive to youth, access by youth to markets, business models that work, and access to a pool of appropriate skills, capacities and knowledge and ways to grow these.

Book Drivers of youth engagement in agriculture Insights from Guatemala Niger Nigeria Rwanda and Uganda

Download or read book Drivers of youth engagement in agriculture Insights from Guatemala Niger Nigeria Rwanda and Uganda written by Babu, Suresh Chandra and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging burgeoning youth populations in developing country agriculture is seen as an important strategy toward effective, efficient, and sustainable food system transformation. Yet the policy, institutional, technological, and capability barriers and ways to overcome them for successful participation of youth in agriculture are not fully understood. We use a conceptual framework that identifies key pathways to prosperity for youth and classifies contextual and driving factors that contribute to the success of youth engagement in agriculture. The framework comprises four broad categories of strategic interventions: policy and socioeconomic environment; institutional; technological/business infrastructure; and individual skills and capacities. In the context of this framework, we then present insights from cases of youth participation in agriculture in five countries: Guatemala, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Uganda. The countries and cases were purposively selected as part of ongoing research on youth engagement in agriculture. Policies and strategies play an important role in creating an enabling environment for youth engagement in agriculture, including by fostering transparency and accountability in the policy system and promoting youth engagement in the private sector through agricultural extension and other services. Institutions and intermediaries provide financial support, training, and access to market for youth entrepreneurs. Support in these areas should be strengthened. Systems approaches, such as multi-stakeholder platforms, provide holistic support to young agripreneurs (entrepreneurs in agriculture), but require effective coordination. Similarly, information and communication technologies can play a facilitating role by providing platforms to network and receive updated market information but need to be significantly scaled up. Individual capacities can drive youth engagement in agriculture and agripreneurship but must continue to be built up through expanded education and training on technical and functional skills. As policymakers and program managers search for interventions that can promote youth involvement in agriculture in their own countries, the insights from the five countries examined that are presented in this paper may be useful for identifying context-specific challenges and pathways to successful youth engagement in agriculture in their own countries. The framework presented here can be applied to study youth engagement issues in any country or in sub-national, decentralized contexts to generate evidence to guide the design of youth-in-agriculture development programs. There is a need to support, strengthen, and implement the driving factors identified in this paper for expanding youth engagement in agriculture.

Book excerpt: Young people account for a large percentage of the rural population, and are often unemployed or underemployed, despite the need for labour force in agriculture. Rural youth face many hurdles in trying to earn a livelihood. They do not perceive agriculture as a remunerative or prestigious profession, and until they find meaningful economic opportunities and attractive environments in rural areas, they will continue to migrate to cities. This trend not only contributes to the emerging phenomenon of over-urbanization and growing unemployment in urban areas, but is also expected to affect global food production. Investing in young people living in rural areas is therefore key to enhancing agricultural productivity, boosting rural economies and ensuring food security. This publication provides real life examples on how to re-engage youth in agriculture. It shows how tailor-made educational programmes can provide rural youth with the skills and insights needed to engage in farming and adopt environmentally friendly production methods. Many of the initiatives and approaches reported in this study originate from the youth themselves. The following study was a joint undertaking of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA).

Book Empowering young agri entrepreneurs to invest in agriculture and food systems

Download or read book Empowering young agri entrepreneurs to invest in agriculture and food systems written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-10-14 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measures that empower young agri-entrepreneurs should be a key component of a sustainable development-centred investment promotion strategy. The very realization of future generations’ food security, the sustainable transformation of food systems and the combat against unemployment and distress migration all depend upon the successful implementation of strategies that make the agri-food sector more attractive for the youth. This, in turn, requires smart policy responses that will help young investors overcome the numerous barriers they face – access to finance, land, information and technical services, to name but the most crucial ones.Since 2017, FAO has provided support to African and South-East Asian countries in identifying key challenges for young agri-entrepreneurs and good practices through participatory capacity analyses and strategic planning processes which were carried out with, and for the youth. This report summarizes the main findings and lessons learned from FAO’s work with eleven African countries – Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea Conakry, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia and Uganda. It identifies key challenges and policy recommendations regarding youth’s access to finance; land; technical services and information; as well as the engagement of youth in policy-making processes. The report also contains a set of five overall key policy recommendations for the empowerment of young agri-entrepreneurs.

Book Policies and institutions shaping the business enabling environment of agrifood processors in Senegal

Download or read book Policies and institutions shaping the business enabling environment of agrifood processors in Senegal written by Ilie, E.T., Kelly, S. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-03-03 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small and medium agrifood enterprises (SMAEs) such as processors, transporters and other service providers, play an important role in achieving sustainable development objectives. For instance, they connect farmers to urban markets; make significant investments in rural areas; provide employment to vulnerable populations such as women and youth; and propel the modernization of agrifood value chains. In sub-Saharan Africa, where agriculture comprises 53 percent of total employment and 15.5 percent of gross domestic product, supporting SMAEs can have great implications for pro-poor growth and rural transformation. To support SMAEs in fulfilling their potential, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has been dedicating research to better understand their policy and technical needs. This publication is such output and aims to provide an assessment of the policy and institutional framework in Senegal shaping the business models of small and medium agrifood processors. This systemic appraisal of Senegal’s business enabling environment for SMAEs was cross-fertilized with an analysis of the business models of three rice millers, resulting in a related FAO technical study 'The role of small and medium agrifood enterprises in food systems transformation: the case of rice processors in Senegal'. The analyses were carried out using a multidisciplinary agrifood systems approach, which looks at policies and institutions related to procurement, operations, logistics, finance, marketing and sales, human resources, and strategic partnerships. Due to its well-articulated policy documents and the extensive research on various aspects of the business enabling environment conducted in the country, Senegal represents a compelling case to illustrate the links between policies and the activities of agrifood processors.

Download or read book The Role of Agribusiness Private Sector Actors in Creating Economic Opportunities for Youth in Agriculture A Case Study of USAID Feed The Future Youth Leadership for Agriculture Activity in Eastern Uganda written by Wilber Kakaire and published by . This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 60.0, course: MA International Development, language: English, abstract: This study was conducted to explore the role of agribusiness private sector actors in creating economic opportunities for youth along their respective agribusiness value chains. Uganda's underutilization of youth labour rate is high standing at 67.9 %. Agriculture remains the biggest opportunity for creation of massive economic opportunities for youth. A cross sectional research design was adopted. The study area was eastern Uganda in four districts. Using questionnaires and key informant interviews, a total of 220 and 9 respondents were interviewed respectively. Quantitative data analysis mainly consisted of descriptive statistics and content analysis was used for qualitative data. The study revealed that 99.1 % of youth were engaging in agribusiness with 93.5% of youth into primary production of mainly maize, beans and soya as the major crops. youth and agribusiness companies had a positive attitude engaging each other at different levels of agricultural value chain. Lack of access to finance (64%), skills and knowledge (58.4%) and land (46.3%) were the main barriers for youth in agribusinesses. However, (94.1%) of the respondents agreed to untapped economic opportunities still in production. Trainings (64.2%) and enabling access to finance (62.7%) were top roles for agribusinesses to increase profitable youth participation in agriculture. The study recommends: (i) innovative and inclusive financial solutions for all youth in agribusiness; (ii) government and donors need to invest in a sustainable market facilitative approach, enhance early mind-sets change and promote technical market driven skills development for workforce readiness in agribusiness targeting youth both in school and out of school.

Book Delving deeper into the agricultural transformation and youth employment nexus

Download or read book Delving deeper into the agricultural transformation and youth employment nexus written by Adesugba, Margaret Abiodun and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth employment is not an entirely new topic for research and policy. Recent estimates from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) (2013a) suggest that high and rising unemployment rates among youth remain a key challenge to global development, especially in the developing world. This is particularly important in sub-Saharan Africa where about 85 percent of youth (defined by the ILO as all those between the ages of 15 and 24 years) are poor, 70 percent live in rural areas where agriculture is the main source for their income and subsistence, and 11 million youth are expected to enter the labor market every year for the next decade (World Bank 2014). These characteristics of youth in sub-Saharan Africa justify the centrality of the nexus between youth employment and agriculture in formulating development policy on the continent. At the same time, youth unemployment is currently one of the issues receiving attention at the top of the global development agenda.

Book Public Policies for Food Sovereignty

Download or read book Public Policies for Food Sovereignty written by Annette Aurelie Desmarais and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing number of rural and urban-based movements are realizing some political traction in their demands for democratization of food systems through food sovereignty. Some are pressuring to institutionalize food sovereignty principles and practices through laws, policies, and programs. While the literature on food sovereignty continues to grow in volume and complexity, there are a number of key questions that need to be examined more deeply. These relate specifically to the processes and consequences of seeking to institutionalize food sovereignty: What dimensions of food sovereignty are addressed in public policies and which are left out? What are the tensions, losses and gains for social movements engaging with sub-national and national governments? How can local governments be leveraged to build autonomous spaces against state and corporate power? The contributors to this book analyze diverse institutional processes related to food sovereignty, ranging from community-supported agriculture to food policy councils, direct democracy initiatives to constitutional amendments, the drafting of new food sovereignty laws to public procurement programmes, as well as Indigenous and youth perspectives, in a variety of contexts including Brazil, Ecuador, Spain, Switzerland, UK, Canada, USA, and Africa. Together, the contributors to this book discuss the political implications of integrating food sovereignty into existing liberal political structures, and analyze the emergence of new political spaces and dynamics in response to interactions between state governance systems and social movements voicing the radical demands of food sovereignty.
