Book Engaging Young People in the Implementation of Esd in the Unece Region

Download or read book Engaging Young People in the Implementation of Esd in the Unece Region written by United Nations Publications and published by UN. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) was officially embedded in the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, many assumed that ESD had arrived in formal education settings. In reality however, this is only true to quite a small degree. Its uptake within the UNECE region has been shown to be too slow. Seen in the context of the ever-growing challenges our societies - and especially young people within them - face, this article points to non-formal education (NFE) as a powerful driver of change towards sustainable development. It shows that NFE's complementary power has been undervalued for too long, and its potential for youth participation has been left almost untapped. Three successful best practice examples from Austria deliver supporting evidence and show how to combine ESD and NFE from a policy implementation perspective. The article concludes that in reforming one-sizefits-all education systems, non-formal education for sustainable development should play a key part.

Book Implementation of the Unece Strategy for Esd Across the Ece Region 2015 2018

Download or read book Implementation of the Unece Strategy for Esd Across the Ece Region 2015 2018 written by United Nations Publications and published by UN. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present document provides a summary of the progress made by the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) and the United Nations Member States in implementing the ECE Strategy for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) during the implementation phase 2017-2019 (also referred to as the "implementation phase IV"). The present synthesis report is based on the analysis of 34 national implementation reports submitted by Member States for that phase. The national implementation reports, reveal that many countries have policies in place to support ESD but the challenge remains of coordinating those policies and increasing the number of countries with national implementation plans for ESD, as observed during the previous implementation phases. Many countries have expanded policies to the non-formal and informal sectors, encouraged synergies and involved various stakeholders in ESD. However, the 'whole-institution approach' needs to be re-examined and further implemented in the context of some countries, mainly in relation to incentives and policies. In almost all countries, educators reported having received training on ESD competences during pre- and in-service training. Tools and materials for ESD are widely produced through national strategies and investment of public money, but more needs to be done in terms of dissemination and accessibility of materials and the establishment of quality control criteria. Many Governments recognize the need to connect research to ESD policy and practice. Concerning the promotion of research and development, the weakest element is the evaluation of the Strategy's outcomes.

Book Competences in Education for Sustainable Development

Download or read book Competences in Education for Sustainable Development written by Paul Vare and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-02 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume highlights key moments and movements in this "competence turn" in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), and explores the different ways in which competences have been conceptualized and implemented. By marshaling a dialogue between chapters and sections, the book provides a coherent whole that will become a key source on ESD competences. The contributors develop a conceptual map against which to chart existing (and future) ESD competence frameworks, offer new critical case studies that explore the implementation of educator competences in ESD at different structural levels in different European contexts, explore the link between pedagogy and educator competence through hitherto unpublished case studies based on current practices across Europe, and consider the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on ESD and educator competence. The book comprises 23 chapters divided into four sections, with an introduction and concluding chapter. Section One introduces concepts and models related to ESD competences, while the following two sections focus on implementation and pedagogy. In light of the foregoing material, the shorter Section Four is both reflective and forward looking. The primary audience for this book will be academics and students working in the fields of Education, Sustainability Science and related disciplines.

Book The Aarhus Convention

Download or read book The Aarhus Convention written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Aarhus Convention, which is open for global accession, offers powerful twin protections for the environment and human rights. It provides an effective model for ensuring public input in defining and implementing green economy programmes, in choosing the most appropriate road maps to sustainability and for increasing transparency and Government accountability, thereby putting Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development into practice and paving the way for its universal application. The Aarhus Convention Implementation Guide is therefore intended as a convenient non-legally binding and user-friendly reference tool to assist policymakers, legislators and public authorities in their daily work of implementing the Convention and of realising the provisions of Principle 10 in practice. It is also hoped that it will assist members of the public and environmental non-governmental organizations to exercise their rights under the Convention. The Implementation Guide provides both a general overview of the principles behind the Convention and a detailed article-by-article analysis of its provisions. In its analysis, the Guide draws on other international law instruments in the area of the environment and human rights, decisions adopted by the Meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention, findings of the Aarhus Convention Compliance Committee, academic writings and examples from national legislation and practice.

Book Schooling for Sustainable Development in Africa

Download or read book Schooling for Sustainable Development in Africa written by Heila Lotz-Sisitka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the scope and dynamics of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and learning in schools in Africa. It explores the conditions and processes that support such learning, and examines how ESD in schooling can improve the quality and relevance of education. The quality of education has been defined internationally as a key concern for educational institutions around the world, including schools in Africa. The models of quality are often limited to performance-based approaches and/or inclusive approaches. The contributions in this book show that there is more to a discussion on educational quality in Africa than performance success and/or inclusion. The chapters explain how ESD brings a new relevance to education in Africa, and at the same time, sounds the beginning of a new concept of quality education. The volume presents a collection of experiences in creating and supporting quality learning processes through a variety of ESD practices.
