Book excerpt: Engaging the United Nations is an accessible introduction to the UN and a guide to prepare for a Model UN simulation. Each chapter is introduced by a comic that relates the parallel stories of two young women, one a refugee on the receiving end of international institutions, and the other a recent college graduate whose work shows the bureaucratic side of the UN. Each chapter has three sections: Content, which discusses theory, history, and facts like a standard textbook; Skills, which focuses on the essential skills of research, writing, effective communication, and diplomacy needed to excel as a delegate to a Model UN conference; and Exercises, which explores these skills in a classroom setting. The plight of refugees is central to the narrative of the comic portion of the text, and a portion of the proceeds of this book will be given to refugee assistance efforts.

Book The Ecology of Violent Extremism

Download or read book The Ecology of Violent Extremism written by Lisa Schirch and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ecology of Violent Extremism brings together leading theorists and practitioners to describe an ecological or systems approach to violent extremism. Nothing can be fixed until it is understood. News media keep us alarmed to the close--‐up devastation of acts of terrorism. This book climbs a ladder to get a better view of the problem. What is beneath and beyond violent extremism? How do we respond to the problem of violent extremism in ways that do not fertilize the root causes that fueled it in the first place? While many books offer one or two hypotheses for preventing terrorism, this book gives readers the tools to look at the problem from many different angles. The book offers a “map of violent extremism” drawing connections between twenty--‐five factors that correlate with violent extremism (VE). On a spectrum, counterterrorism seeks to disrupt, detain, and destroy terrorist plans and networks. P/CVE seeks to prevent and counter the belief systems that support violent extremism. Peacebuilding addresses the longer--‐term factors and root causes driving VE. An ecological approach to VE recognizes that interventions also interact with each other. For example, some approaches to counterterrorism also motivate further recruitment to VE groups and undermine peacebuilding interventions. Readers finish the book recognizing the debates within the very definition of violent extremism, and understanding a broader paradigm for how we understand and respond to violent extremist beliefs and acts of terror.

Book China in the United Nations

Download or read book China in the United Nations written by Wei Liu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines China''s participation in the United Nations (UN). There are two research components. First, the author seeks to find a pattern of China''s multilateral diplomatic behavior in the UN by examining China''s behavior toward peacekeeping operations and arms control issues during different leadership periods under Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and Jiang Zemin respectively. Second, a model is proposed to explain this pattern of behavior. By marrying rationalism and constructivism, this model argues that the amelioration of China''s external security environment changes in its projected self-image. Furthermore, China''s consistently strong view of sovereignty determines its evolving pattern of behavior in the UN. Contents: Introduction; China and the United Nations; China''s Pattern of Participation; Explaining China in the UN; China''s UN Policy Under Mao''s Leadership (1971OCo1982); China''s UN Policy under the First Stage of Deng''s Leadership (1982OCo1989); China''s UN Participation in the Second Stage of Deng''s Leadership (1990OCo1996); China''s UN Participation under Jiang''s Leadership (1996OCo2006); Conclusion. Readership: Graduates, academics and professionals who are interested in Chinese politics and society.

Book International Legal Issues Arising Under the United Nations Decade of International Law

Download or read book International Legal Issues Arising Under the United Nations Decade of International Law written by Najeeb M. Al-Nauimi and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1995-07-28 with total page 1374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State of Qatar, the Asian-African Legal Consultative Committee (AALCC), in cooperation with the Secretariat of the United Nations and Frère Cholmeley (Paris) organised the Conference on International Legal Issues Arising under the United Nations Decade of International Law in Doha, Qatar on 22--25 March 1994. Around 60 speakers and 200 participants from more than 40 nations freely expressed their views on the progressive development of international law and its codification with a view to States' actions in the future adhering to the principles of international law as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. The subjects dealt with by the Conference had one thing in common: they were all topical issues or, in French, 'des questions d'actualité', and will remain thus throughout the United Nations Decade of International Law. The various themes were Environmental Law, the Law of the Sea, the Settlement of Disputes, Humanitarian Law, and the Rio Conference, Post-Rio and the New International Economic Order. This book which contains the Conference proceedings will be of great interest to lawyers specializing in international law. The book is not only a photograph of some very important issues as they existed and were perceived in 1994, it will also serve as a reference book and a unique tool which will be indispensable to understanding some of the most crucial legal problems with which the world community is faced today.

Book International Peace Conferences

Download or read book International Peace Conferences written by Bertrand G. Ramcharan and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has emerged out of the author's experience as Director of an innovative peacemaking, peacekeeping and humanitarian initiative, the International Conference on the Former Yugoslavia, between 1992 and 1996. What was striking about this conference was the experiment of two full-time Co-Chairmen, one from the United Nations and one from the European Union, who laboured tirelessly for peace in different parts of the former Yugoslavia for three and a half years. The strategies and organization of the conference had to be pieced together from the start by the Co-Chairmen and their colleagues; only in retrospect could the question whether there might have been experiences of international peace conferences that might have been useful at the beginning of this process be reviewed. This research is contained in Part One of this book, which offers a review of the role of international peace conferences in history. Part Two contains a case study of the strategies and experiences of the International Conference on the Former Yugoslavia.
