However, despite the increasing attention which is now paid to this violence by policy makers data seem to indicate that these efforts are not having as great an impact as may have been hoped. In all countries of the world, reports of gender-related violence remain elevated, whilst many incidents of such violence probably remain unreported due to fear of stigma or reprisals for those who are victims. One of the problems in tackling gender-based violence has been that for too long men have been ignored as part of the solution. Men are often labelled as perpetrators of violence, but they are perhaps too infrequently considered also as potential victims, or as partners and actors in the fight against violence. Constructions of masculinities are not adequately studied to analyse how dominant forms of masculinities may contribute to cycles of violence, and may also oppress and traumatise men themselves. This volume aims to address critically the issues of men, masculinity and gender-based violence, asking how men can be fully engaged in the prevention of gender-based violence, and how this engagement can strengthen prevention initiatives.

How do these `big questions' relate to a local program that engages men and boys in gender justice-related work? While gender activists globally have recognised the importance and value of engaging men in gender justice, little in-depth documentation exists on the process of engaging men in gender justice-related work at the community level, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This case study attempts to fill this gap, exploring the development of the Kuyasa One Man Can (OMC) Branch in a township outside of Cape Town, South Africa. The Kuyasa OMC Branch is a community-based initiative under the auspices of Sonke Gender Justice Network, a South African-based NGO that seeks to engage men and boys in gender justice and advocacy. At the same time, this thesis examines the way in which seemingly abstract concepts such as `human rights' and `community development' are essential in democratising the structures in which we live and facilitating individuals to act in their own interest. Arguing for the strength of community-based initiatives in the struggle to eradicate gender-based violence, this thesis calls for men to be more actively involved in issues of women's rights and gender justice more generally. The wounds that remain in South Africa, like many developing countries, are not going to go away over night, and multi-faceted approaches to a complex web of economic, structural, political, and social issues need to happen to lay the foundation for long-term and embedded change to take root. The Kuyasa OMC Branch not only offers us a place to explore the importance of community level facilitation of gender justice-related work, but to confront the ways in which the concept of `human rights' is understood and actualised on the ground.

Based on life history interviews with men and women anti-violence activists aged 22 to 70, Some Men explores the strains and tensions of men's work as feminist allies. When feminist women began to mobilize against rape and domestic violence, setting up shelters and rape crisis centers, a few men asked what they could do to help. They were directed "upstream," and told to "talk to the men" with the goal of preventing future acts of violence. This is a book about men who took this charge seriously, committing themselves to working with boys and men to stop violence, and to change the definition of what it means to be a man. The book examines the experiences of three generational cohorts: a movement cohort of men who engaged with anti-violence work in the 1970s and early 1980s, during the height of the feminist anti-violence mobilizations; a bridge cohort who engaged with anti-violence work from the mid-1980s into the 1990s, as feminism receded as a mass movement and activists built sustainable organizations; a professional cohort who engaged from the mid-1990s to the present, as anti-violence work has become embedded in community and campus organizations, non-profits, and the state. Across these different time periods, stories from life history interviews illuminate men's varying paths--including men of different ethnic and class backgrounds--into anti-violence work. Some Men explores the promise of men's violence prevention work with boys and men in schools, college sports, fraternities, and the U.S. military. It illuminates the strains and tensions of such work--including the reproduction of male privilege in feminist spheres--and explores how men and women navigate these tensions.
