Comment assurer que le soutien d'adultes à l'action de jeunes ne soit pas perverti en tentatives de récupération servant les intérêts des premiers ? Comment convaincre les jeunes de leur intérêt à s'engager ? Quand ils s'engagent, quel intérêt y trouvent-ils effectivement ? Même partielle, cette liste de questions laisse déjà apparaître la pertinence d'une collaboration étroite entre universitaires et intervenants dans l'évaluation des efforts investis pour réduire les écarts grandissants entre une citoyenneté définie idéalement et celle vécue par les jeunes générations.

It suggests new approaches and answers to a classic, but still valid question of political socialisation research: ‘Who learns what from whom, under what circumstances, and with what effects?’ (Greenstein 1965: 13). The volume maintains that political socialisation is no universal or independent phenomenon, but one significantly shaped by the surrounding parameters of the society in which it is embedded. Therefore, deficits in political socialisation research have become especially clear in light of political and societal changes over recent decades. The book contributes to two important discussions in the study of political socialisation: first, the question of the (relative) importance of socialisation agents and contexts, second – inextricably interwoven with the first – the timing of political socialisation. From a European perspective, articles in the volume shed light on old problems and topics of the field, using new methodological approaches or dealing with long-neglected perspectives such as young children’s democratic learning or political socialisation. Students have been involved in a full range of public issues, from anti-colonial movements, anti-war campaigns, civil rights and pro-democracy movements to campaigns against neoliberal policies, austerity, racism, misogyny and calls for climate change action. Yet their actions are frequently dismissed by political elites and others as ‘adolescent mischief’ or manipulation of young people by duplicitous adults. This occurs even as many working in governments, traditional media and educational organisations attempt to suppress student movements. Moreover, much of mainstream scholarly work has deemed student politics as unworthy of intellectual attention. These three edited volumes of books help set the record straight. Written by scholars and activists from around the world, When Students Protest: Universities in the Global North is the third in this three-volume study that explores university student politics in the global north. Authors explore university and college student political action, especially over the past decade. It is just over fifty years since May 1968 when student protests erupted at Université Paris Nanterre in France and then spread across the globe. Contributors to this book demonstrate that despite repeated attempts by states, power elites and institutions to suppress and even criminalise student political action, student movements have always been part of the political landscape and remain a significant and potent source of political change and renewal.
