Download or read book Beyond Conventional Boundaries written by Daniela Mercieca and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-22 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ...The impact which my decisions will have on this child’s life is enormous and far-reaching. Relatively speaking, the impact which she will have on my life is minimal. She will be a thought in my mind, at most, an incessant worry. Yet even this is grudged – we professionals tell each other that we have to leave our work behind when we go home – don’t take your work worries with you... (p.85) This book calls for a re-thinking of practice and research with children in the helping professions. In the context of today’s fast world with its requirement for order and precision, the practice of working with children is imbued with ethical dilemmas which practitioners may or may not be aware of. It is important for the practitioner to feel suspended in uncertainty before taking action. In terms of research, the complexity of what is explored is reflected in the complexity of the research method. In a parallel writing, this uncertainty is a central theme in practice through the narrative of three stories of the author’s involvement with children referred for support. The book explores how uncertainty and anxiety can be turned to good use rather than being a debilitating force to the practising psychologist. It also touches upon issues of performativity, accountability and efficiency in the becoming of professionals in the helping professions.

Download or read book Touching Architecture written by Anthony Brand and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about perception, emotion, and affect in architecture: how and why we feel the way that we do and the ways in which our surroundings and bodies contribute to this. Our experience of architecture is an embodied one, with all our senses acting in concert as we move through time and space. The book picks up where much of the critique of architectural aestheticism at the end of the twentieth century left off: illustrating the limitations and potential consequences of attending to architecture as the visually biased practice which has steadily become the status quo within both industry and education. It draws upon interdisciplinary research to elucidate the reasons why this is counter-productive to the creation of meaningful places and to articulate the embodied richness of our touching encounters. A "felt-phenomenology" is introduced as a more-than visual alternative capable of sustaining our physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. By recognising the reciprocal and participatory relationship that exists between atmospheric affect and our (phenomenological) bodies, we begin to appreciate the manifold ways in which we touch, and are touched, by our built environment. As such, Touching Architecture will appeal to those with an interest in architectural history and theory as well as those interested in the topic of atmospheres, affect, and embodied perception.

This book was released on 2024-10-02 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the contemporary world, where energy efficiency and sustainability are paramount, exergy analysis has emerged as a crucial tool for addressing the complex challenges of energy use and environmental impact. Unlike traditional energy analysis, which focuses solely on the quantity of energy, exergy analysis considers the quality of energy, providing a more nuanced understanding of how energy is utilized within systems. This distinction is critical in a world where maximizing resource efficiency is not just desirable but necessary. Within the aforementioned information, the book has several topics related to exergy trying to provide the reader with a deeper understanding of this field. In this sense, a deep introduction talking about the theoretical background will be presented and subsequently the exergy evaluation in the energy field and fluids. In summary, exergy analysis is a vital tool in the contemporary world, enabling more sustainable and efficient use of energy resources. By focusing on energy quality and the irreversibility in energy systems, exergy analysis contributes significantly to the design and optimization of processes that are essential for a sustainable future.

Download or read book Ending Dirty Energy Policy written by Joseph P. Tomain and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-20 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change presents the United States, and the world, with regulatory problems of a magnitude, complexity and scope unseen before. The United States, however, particularly after the mid-term elections of 2010, lacks the political will necessary to aggressively address climate change. Most current books focus on climate change. Ending Dirty Energy Policy argues that the US will not adequately address climate change until it transforms its fossil fuel energy policy. Yet there are signs that the country will support the transformation of its century-old energy policy from one that is dependent on fossil fuels to a low-carbon energy portfolio. A transformative energy policy that favors energy efficiency and renewable resources can occur only after the US has abandoned the traditional fossil fuel energy policy, has redesigned regulatory systems to open new markets and promoted competition among new energy providers, and has stimulated private-sector commercial and venture capital investment in energy innovations that can be brought to commercial scale and marketability.

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Energy Security written by Benjamin K. Sovacool and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook examines the subject of energy security: its definition, dimensions, ways to measure and index it, and the complicating factors that are often overlooked. The volume identifies varying definitions and dimensions of energy security, including those that prioritize security of supply and affordability alongside those that emphasize availability, energy efficiency, trade, environmental quality, and social and political stewardship. It also explores the various metrics that can be used to give energy security more coherence, and also to enable it to be measured, including recent attempts to measure energy security progress at the national level, with a special emphasis placed on countries within the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), countries within Asia, and industrialized countries worldwide. This Handbook: • Broadens existing discussions of energy security that center on access to fuels, including "oil security" and "coal security." • Focuses not only on the supply side of energy but also the demand, taking a hard look at energy services and politics along with technologies and infrastructure; • Investigates energy security issues such as energy poverty, equity and access, and development; • Analyzes ways to index and measure energy security progress at the national and international level. This book will be of much interest to students of energy security, energy policy, economics, environmental studies, and IR/Security Studies in general.
