Book Design of Heat Exchangers for Heat Pump Applications

Download or read book Design of Heat Exchangers for Heat Pump Applications written by Marco Fossa and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat pumps (HPs) allow for providing heat without direct combustion, in both civil and industrial applications. They are very efficient systems that, by exploiting electrical energy, greatly reduce local environmental pollution and CO2 global emissions. The fact that electricity is a partially renewable resource and because the coefficient of performance (COP) can be as high as four or more, means that HPs can be nearly carbon neutral for a full sustainable future. The proper selection of the heat source and the correct design of the heat exchangers is crucial for attaining high HP efficiencies. Heat exchangers (also in terms of HP control strategies) are hence one of the main elements of HPs, and improving their performance enhances the effectiveness of the whole system. Both the heat transfer and pressure drop have to be taken into account for the correct sizing, especially in the case of mini- and micro-geometries, for which traditional models and correlations can not be applied. New models and measurements are required for best HPs system design, including optimization strategies for energy exploitation, temperature control, and mechanical reliability. Thus, a multidisciplinary approach of the analysis is requested and become the future challenge.

Book Dynamic Modeling and Control of Hybrid Ground Source Heat Pump Systems

Download or read book Dynamic Modeling and Control of Hybrid Ground Source Heat Pump Systems written by Chang Chen and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems are one of the fastest growing applications of renewable energy in the world with annual increases of 10% over the past decade. GSHPs are potentially more efficient than conventional air-to-air heat pumps as they use the relatively constant temperature of the geothermal energy to provide heating or cooling to conditioned rooms at desired temperature and relative humidity. More importantly, GSHP systems can in fact achieve significant energy savings year round, compared to conventional HVAC systems. A hybrid ground source heat pump (HGSHP) system is designed in this study to heat and cool an office building all the year round. Dynamic models of each component of the heat pump system are developed for simulations of heat transfer between each component of the HGSHP system and for control strategy design and analysis. A detailed multiple-load aggregation algorithm (MLAA) is adapted from the literature to precisely account for and calculate the transient heat conduction in vertical ground heat exchangers with different yearly, monthly, and daily pulses of heat. Feedback PI controllers for heat pump units and On/Off controllers for boiler and cooling tower are designed and utilized to match anticipated building loads and to analyze transient response characteristics of such outputs as water flow rate and air flow rate of heat pumps, return water temperature and supply air temperature of heat pumps, water temperatures of ground loops and heat exchangers, water temperature of boiler or cooling tower, and fuel flow rate of boiler. Control strategies for the HGSHP system in both heating and cooling modes of operation are also introduced to study the system responses. With the usage of On/Off controllers and well-tuned PI controllers, as well as optimal control strategies for heating and cooling operations, the HGSHP system is expected to give better operating performance and efficiency. As a result, noticeable energy savings can be achieved in both heating and cooling modes of operation.

Book The Heat Pump A Technical Look

Download or read book The Heat Pump A Technical Look written by Laura Hoffmann and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-09-08 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Engineering - Power Engineering, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Munich, language: English, abstract: In this paper, the principle of heat pumps will be looked at and discussed more in detail. Heat pumps can play an important role in the transformation towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, due to their ability to lift low-grade environmental heat with power to a temperature level useful in buildings. They are efficient in providing heat when implemented correctly and can also provide demand response. Thus, heat pumps are able to provide, compared to other heating systems, significant carbon savings that are even expected to rise further in the future. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption poses one of the major issues that has to be dealt with at present. National and international climate change objectives demand a significant reduction in all sectors Along with the increasing expectations of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, these global targets are causing a change in our energy system. The demand for energy-efficient and cost-effective systems have risen due primarily to dwindling resources causing increasing energy costs. To deal with these issues, the focus shifts more and more towards phasing out fossil fuels and replacing them with electrical energy systems powered by renewable intermittent energy sources, such as sun and wind, to decrease our reliance on fossil fuels. One way to heat buildings more efficiently is the use of a heat pump. Heat pumps have become popular in Germany, by now, over 1 million have been implemented.

Book Technology Installation Review A Case Study on Energy efficient Technologies

Download or read book Technology Installation Review A Case Study on Energy efficient Technologies written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this Technology Installation Review is to provide an overview of hybrid geothermal heat pump systems. It presents the results of recent research on these systems, looks at system types, energy savings, maintenance considerations, and measured technology performance from several examples. Using the ground as a thermal energy source and/or a heat sink for heat pumps has long been recognized to have a number of advantages over the similar use of ambient air. Ground temperatures at about 3-ft depth or lower are much less variable than ambient air temperatures. Further, soil or rock at these depths is usually warmer than ambient air during the coldest winter months and cooler than ambient air during the summer months. This fact leads directly to cooler condensation temperatures (during cooling operation) and warmer evaporating temperatures (during heating) for a heat pump with consequent improved energy efficiency. It also results in increased heating and cooling capacity at extreme temperatures, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for auxiliary heat.

Book Optimizing the Operation of a Hybrid Ground Source Heat Pump System Under Uncertainty

Download or read book Optimizing the Operation of a Hybrid Ground Source Heat Pump System Under Uncertainty written by Hansani Weeratunge and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hybrid renewable energy systems that combine conventional heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and ground source heat pumps (GSHP) have become an attractive alternative for conventional HVAC systems due to their higher cost and energy efficiency.Furthermore, control strategies that exploit predictive information about weather and building occupants' activity can further reduce the system operating costs. This study proposes a Stochastic Model Predictive Control (SMPC) for hybrid GSHP systems considering the stochastic nature of the building space heating demand. In SMPC, near-optimal control decisions are found for the current and future states of the system through the application of Regression Monte-Carlo techniques. We compare the performance of SMPC to that gained by using setpoint Control (SPC) and Model Predictive Control (MPC) which uses a deterministic forecast. It is found that by taking uncertainty into account via SMPC, the operating cost reduction compared to SPC is approximately equal to half of the cost-optimality gap between SPC and an idealized controller that is represented by MPC with perfect future information. Furthermore, we find that MPC using a forecast based on expected values leads to greater operating costs compared to the simpler SPC strategy when variability and uncertainty are present.

Book Solar Energy Technology Handbook

Download or read book Solar Energy Technology Handbook written by E. W. Dickinson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The handbook, for convenient use, is divided into eight main units: (1) The Solar Resource; (2) Solar Thermal Collectors; (3) Photovoltaics; (4) Bioconversion; (5) Wind Energy; (6) Solar Energy Storage Systems; (7) Applications of Solar Energy; (8) Non-technical Issues. In addition there are three Appendixes containing unit-conversion tables and useful solar data. It became obvious early in this project that if proper coverage were to be given each of these areas it would be necessary to divide the handbook into two volumes. The first six units constitute Part A, Engineering Fundamentals and the last two units constitute Part B, Applications, Systems Design, and Economics. These volumes have been prepared primarily as reference books, but it is felt that many of the sections will prove useful for practicing engineers, scientists and students.
