Book Energy Research at the Cutting Edge

Download or read book Energy Research at the Cutting Edge written by John R. Blackwood and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy fuels modern society, though it is often taken for granted. The issues surrounding energy supply of paramount importance to governments the world over. While calls for 'clean' energy technologies are rampant and loud, conventional sources like coal and oil remain the most feasible. However, research continues to plough ahead to find better and more efficient ways to keep the demand for energy met. Nuclear power is a perennially controversial but enticing possibility, although many nations seek to phase-out nuclear power, citing safety and environmental concerns. The energy industry and production is a major economic component in any country, so all energy and electricity issues hold sway over us all. This book brings together an important selection of studies focusing on the energy industry, its current state and future. Included are looks at nuclear power and economic policies to influence the electric industry. This current research combines for a needed resource in the study of energy.

Book excerpt: Transitioning to a decarbonised, climate-friendly society is one of the key challenges of modern times. A major component is the creation of a diverse, secure and climate-friendly energy mix. Fusion research aims to help reach this goal by developing the promising technology of fusion energy as a clean, safe power source for the future. The key facility on the road to fusion power is the ITER Project, a major international collaboration under construction in Cadarache, France. Complementary to ITER, the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), represented by the European Commission, and the Government of Japan, represented by its Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Techology (MEXT), are jointly investing in a project called the Broader Approach. Established in 2007 through the signature of the Broader Approach Agreement by the two partners, the activities carried out under the Broader Approach aim to complement the ITER Project and to address the scientific and engineering challenges related to building a commercial fusion power plant. Thirteen years later, in 2020, Euratom and Japan are launching a new, second phase of activities, focused on exploiting the facilities that have already been built and on working closely with ITER as the latter enters its crucial assembly phase. In practice, the work is carried out by the two "implementing agencies": Fusion for Energy (F4E) for Europe, and the National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology (QST) for Japan. Each organisation leads a "Home Team" and coordinates its respective contribution to the activities.
