Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this book provides a systematic approach to legislation and legal practice concerning energy resources and production in Nigeria. The book describes the administrative organization, regulatory framework, and relevant case law pertaining to the development, application, and use of such forms of energy as electricity, gas, petroleum, and coal, with attention as needed to the pervasive legal effects of competition law, environmental law, and tax law. A general introduction covers the geography of energy resources, sources and basic principles of energy law, and the relevant governmental institutions. Then follows a detailed description of specific legislation and regulation affecting such factors as documentation, undertakings, facilities, storage, pricing, procurement and sales, transportation, transmission, distribution, and supply of each form of energy. Case law, intergovernmental cooperation agreements, and interactions with environmental, tax, and competition law are explained. Its succinct yet scholarly nature, as well as the practical quality of the information it provides, make this book a valuable resource for energy sector policymakers and energy firm counsel handling cases affecting Nigeria. It will also be welcomed by researchers and academics for its contribution to the study of a complex field that today stands at the foreground of comparative law.

Book The Nigerian Electric Power Sector

Download or read book The Nigerian Electric Power Sector written by Ayodele Oni and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitherto, industry participants and professionals have had to navigate the emerging and complex Nigerian electricity supply industry (the power sector) without materials or texts that adequately and comprehensively address the history and policy issues, as well as the legal and regulatory frameworks of the industry. In particular, before this book, there was no book written from a practical and hands-on perspective on the key issues connected with the Nigerian power sector or Nigerian power projects generally; neither was there a book that provided good and practical insights on matters related to the negotiation of power sector transaction documents in Nigeria. The few available texts covered only limited aspects of the power sector as none covered multiple key issues. This 400 page book consisting of 10 chapters, attempts to fill the lacuna. It reviews the general legal and regulatory regime of the power sector. It also takes a comprehensive look at the power sector from a historical dimension and looks at where Nigeria is, in terms of the legal and regulatory regime, and the direction in which the country may be headed. Of particular interest to power sector professionals and other persons who negotiate contracts in the power sector or contracts related to the development of power projects, is the chapter which serves as a guide on negotiating key power sector contracts, such as Power Purchase Agreements, Gas Supply Agreements and Engineering, Procurement and Construction Contracts. Noteworthy, is the fact that the book contains contributions from internationally recognized energy law and policy experts like Stella Duru of Banwo & Ighodalo, Jason Kerr of White & Case, Arun Velusami of Norton Rose and Akshai Fofaria of Pinsent Masons. Further, the book considers other issues in the power sector, such as the Partial Risk Guarantee, which backstops the Federal Government of Nigerias payment obligations to power generation companies; and pricing issues.

Book Energy Policies for Sustainable Development Strategies

Download or read book Energy Policies for Sustainable Development Strategies written by Nnaemeka Vincent Emodi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, a number of long-term energy scenarios are developed for Nigeria considering the impact of vital factors that may influence energy policies in the country’s future energy system. The energy scenarios were developed through the Long-Range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP) model. The model identified the future energy demand and supply pattern using a least-cost combination of technology options while limiting the emission of greenhouse gases. The book presents four scenarios, and key parameters considered include GDP, households, population, urbanization and the growth rates of energy-intensive sectors. Further, it highlights the findings of the cost-benefit analysis, which reveal the costs of implementing selected policies and strategies in Nigeria, including those focusing on energy efficiency and fuel/technology switching. The book also discusses the application of the LEAP-OSeMOSYS Model in order to identify lowest-cost power plants for electricity generation. Some sustainable strategies that can ensure a low carbon development in Nigeria are also explored on the basis of successful country cases in relation to the Nigerian LEAP model. As such, the book will help policy makers devise energy and sustainable strategies to achieve low carbon development in Nigeria.

Book Environmental Safe Use of Coal in the Energy Mix in Nigeria

Download or read book Environmental Safe Use of Coal in the Energy Mix in Nigeria written by Luqman Adedokun and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: B, University of Ibadan (Centre for Petroleum Energy Economics and Law), course: Environmental Law and Policy I, language: English, abstract: Access to energy in the form of electricity undoubtedly plays an important role in nation’s growth, economic development, healthcare delivery, addressing energy poverty, supporting urbanization, delivering competitive energy to developing and developed countries alike and generally human well-being. There are different sources of electricity; and generation of electricity from them equally affect human well– being and the environment. Some of the notable sources of electricity or energy are: solar, fossil fuels, biogas, solid biomass, nuclear, hydropower. This work attempts to examine the environmental safety of coal use vis-a -vis power provision in Nigeria. Coal is a fossil fuel formed from decomposition of organic materials subjected to geological heat and pressure for millions of years. It is considered a non– renewable energy source because it cannot be replenished within human time frame. Coal is a combustible black or brownish – black sedimentary rock normally occurring in rock strata in layers or vein called coal beds or coal steams. The United States Energy Information Administration highlighting the importance and cheaper cost of coal in energy mix states that global consumption is likely to increase by 48%from 6 .7 million metric tons to an estimated 9. 98 billion short tons by 2030. Coal as an energy source contributes about 30% of the United States of America electricity generation, 93% of South Africa electricity generation, and 79% of the People’s Republic of China electricity generation. Going by this statistics and the fact that coal is cheap source for electricity generation, it is safe to assert that Nigeria has the potentials to produce cheaper electricity to solve its dearth of electricity generation and supply using coal. Book Ending Africa s Energy Deficit and the Law

Download or read book Ending Africa s Energy Deficit and the Law written by Yinka Omorogbe and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the inclusion of access to energy in the sustainable development goals, the role of energy to human existence was finally recognized. Yet, in Africa, this achievement is far from realized. Omorogbe and Ordor bring together experts in their fields to ask what is stalling progress, examining problems from institutions catering to vested interests at the continent's expense, to a need to develop vigorous financial and fiscal frameworks. The ramifications and complications of energy law are labyrinthine: this volume discusses how energy deficits can burden disabled people, women, and children in excess of their more fortunate counterparts, as well as considering environmental issues, including the delicate balance between the necessity of water for drinking and cleaning and the use of water in industrial processes. A pivotal work of scholarship, the book poses pressing questions for energy law and international human rights.

Book The Role of Law in Promoting Renewable Energy Development in Nigeria

Download or read book The Role of Law in Promoting Renewable Energy Development in Nigeria written by Emem Onyejelam and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The energy crisis in Nigeria is such that has brought about development setbacks, environmental degradation, increased poverty rate, etc and these must be addressed to bring about socio-economic development. The key to improving energy access lies in the ability of the government to include renewable energy sources like solar, wind energy, geothermal energy, biomass, as part of the nation's energy mix. However, the government can only achieve this feat where private investors (domestic and foreign) are actively involved. The Renewable energy industry in Nigeria is driven by Policies and most recently, the National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy, 2015. Policies in Nigeria have been criticised for lacking in implementation, consistency, stability and lacking binding effects. These factors send the wrong signals to potential investors who need to be assured of security over investments made. Thus, it is therfore pertinent to have a legislation on renewable energy that would complement already existing policies and guarantee justice in event of a breach. The law can create an enabling environment for potential investors to drive renewable energy development in Nigeri

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's energy structure underpins the global environmental crisis and changing it will require regulatory change at a massive level. Energy is highly regulated in international law, but the field has never been comprehensively mapped. The legal sources on which the governance of energy is based are plentiful but they are scattered across a vast legal expanse. This book is the first single-authored study of the international law of energy as a whole. Written by a world-leading expert, it provides a comprehensive account of the international law of energy and analyses the implications of the ongoing energy transformation for international law. The study combines conceptual and doctrinal analysis of all the main rules, processes and institutions to consider the past, present and likely future of global energy governance. Providing a solid foundation for teaching, research and practice, this book addresses both the theory and real-world policy dimension of the international law of energy.
