Book Heavy Ion Collisions At Intermediate Energy Theoretical Models

Download or read book Heavy Ion Collisions At Intermediate Energy Theoretical Models written by Dasgupta Subal and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-08-27 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ions are atoms or molecules stripped of their electrons, so they can be accelerated by electric fields. They can be made to hit each other with low energy, intermediate energy, high energy, or very high energy; each energy range seeks to investigate different aspects of hadronic physics. Intermediate-energy heavy ion collisions explore the nuclei far from stability valley, the incompressibility of nuclear matter, the liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear environment, the symmetry energy far from the normal density, and other phenomena. This has been an active field of research for last four decades. This is a book for entrants in the field. It is suitable as a companion book in a graduate course. For practitioners in the field it will be useful as a reference.

Book Hydrodynamical Aspects of Heavy ion Collisions

Download or read book Hydrodynamical Aspects of Heavy ion Collisions written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the framework of a hydrodynamical model, three important aspects of heavy-ion collisions are investigated: the potential energy of a nucleus as a function of deformation, the dynamical coupling between collective shape modes, and the effect of the transfer of collective energy into single-particle excitations. The dependence of potential energy on shape has the effect of preventing fusion of heavy ions unless the nuclear system can be brought inside its fission saddle point. For increasing mass number A and angular momentum the fission saddle-point shape becomes more compact than a touching-ion configuration, leading to a rapid drop of predicted fusion cross sections in the vicinity of A = 200. For nuclei with A approximately greater than 200, the coupling between collective shape modes increases the kinetic energy needed by colliding ions to coalesce to a compact shape. This increases the energy required for fusion. In addition to exciting collective shape oscillations during heavy-ion collisions, some of the initial kinetic energy is converted into internal single-particle excitation energy. Two possible mechanisms for this conversion are discussed: ordinary (two-body) viscosity, which arises from collisions between individual nucleons, and one-body dissipation, which arises from nucleon collisions with the moving potential wall. Dynamical calculations using either of these dissipation mechanisms reproduce experimental fission-fragment kinetic energies for nuclei throughout the periodic table. Many of the experimentally observed features of strongly damped heavy-ion collisions are reproduced by dynamical calculations using relatively small values of the ordinary two-body viscosity coefficient, although some discrepancies remain. The analogous calculations using one-body dissipation are not yet done. 8 figures, 1 table.

Book Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

Download or read book Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions written by Ramona Vogt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-06-04 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in high energy heavy-ion physics. It is relevant for students who will work on topics being explored at RHIC and the LHC. In the first part, the basic principles of these studies are covered including kinematics, cross sections (including the quark model and parton distribution functions), the geometry of nuclear collisions, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics and relevant aspects of lattice gauge theory at finite temperature. The second part covers some more specific probes of heavy-ion collisions at these energies: high mass thermal dileptons, quarkonium and hadronization. The second part also serves as extended examples of concepts learned in the previous part. Both parts contain examples in the text as well as exercises at the end of each chapter. - Designed for students and newcomers to the field- Focuses on hard probes and QCD- Covers all aspects of high energy heavy-ion physics- Includes worked example problems and exercises
