Book Coverage awareness Scheduling Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Coverage awareness Scheduling Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks written by Xin Fei and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coverage and energy issues are the fundamental problems which prevent the development of wireless sensor networks. In order to accurately evaluate the monitoring quality (coverage), one needs to model the interactive of sensors, phenomenons and the environment. Furthermore, in collaborative with scheduling algorithm and computer optimization, protocols can improve the overall monitoring quality and prolong the lifetime of network. This thesis is an investigation of coverage problem and its relative applications in the wireless sensor networks. We first discuss the realistic of current boolean sensing model and propose an irregular sensing model used to determine the coverage in the area with obstacles. We then investigate a joint problem of maintaining the monitoring quality and extending the lifetime of network by using scheduling schemes. Since the scheduling problem is NP hard, genetic algorithm and Markov decision process are used to determine an achievable optimal result for the joint problem of coverage-preserving and lifetime-prolong. In order to avoid the cost of centralized or distributed scheduling algorithms, a localized coverage-preserving scheduling algorithm is proposed by exploring the construction process of Voronoi diagram. Besides exploring the coverage characteristic in a static wireless sensor network, we investigate the coverage problem when the mobile elements are introduced into network. We consider the single-hop mobile data gathering problem with the energy efficiency and data freshness concerns in a wireless sensor network where the connectivity cannot be maintained. We first investigate the upper/lower bound of the covering time for a single collector to cover the monitoring area. Through our investigation we show that for a bounded rectangle area a hexagon walk could explore the area more efficiently than a random walk when the edges of area are known. We then propose a virtual force mobile model (VFM) in which the energy consumption for data transmission is modeled as a virtual elastic force and used to guide of mobile collectors to move to optimal positions for energy saving.

Book An Energy Efficient and Dynamic Security Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book An Energy Efficient and Dynamic Security Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks written by Adil Bashir and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-07-21 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, grade: 8.12, , course: M. Tech, language: English, abstract: Wireless sensor network (WSN) is an emerging imperious leading technology of the current century that presents great promise for various pioneering applications. The use of sensor networks should keep developing, mainly in the fields of scientific, logistic, healthcare and military applications. Sensor networks interact and collect sensitive data and operate in unattended hostile environments, thus it is imperative to pay attention to the security of wireless sensor networks as they are highly prone to threats. For successful operation of the nodes, it is important to maintain the security and privacy of the transmitted data as well as the data stored at nodes. The different security protocols and models used in the wired and other wireless networks such as ad-hoc networks cannot be used in WSNs because the sensor size poses significant restrictions, mainly in terms of energy autonomy and node lifetime, as the batteries have to be too tiny. Also, the existing security protocols in these constrained networks are not sufficiently energy efficient, which is the real motivation behind this work. In this thesis, a light-weight dynamic security algorithm titled “An Energy Efficient and Dynamic Security Protocol (EEDSP)” for wireless sensor networks has been proposed and implemented at nodal level. We also implement an existing algorithm and then carry out the performance analysis of both the algorithms in terms of energy consumptions, node lifetime and memory requirements at source and intermediate nodes to verify the improvement in our protocol’s results.

Book Energy Efficient Secure and Privacy Preserving Data Aggregation in Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Energy Efficient Secure and Privacy Preserving Data Aggregation in Wireless Sensor Networks written by Irfana Memon and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WSNs are formed by sensor nodes that have the ability to sense the environment, process the sensed information, and communicate via radio without any additional prior backbone infrastructure. In WSNs, communication with other nodes is the most energy consuming task. Hence, the primary objective in designing protocols for WSNs is to minimize communication overhead. This is often achieved using in-network data aggregation. As WSNs are often deployed in open environments, they are vulnerable to security attacks. This thesis contributes toward the design of energy efficient secure and privacy preserving data aggregation protocol for WSNs. First, we classify the main existing secure and privacy-preserving data aggregation protocols for WSNs in the literature. We then propose an energy-efficient secure and privacy-preserving data aggregation (ESPPA) scheme for WSNs. ESPPA scheme is tree-based and achieves confidentiality and privacy based on shuffling technique. We propose a secure tree construction (ST) and tree-reconstruction scheme. Simulation results show that ESPPA scheme effectively preserve privacy, confidentiality, and has less communication overhead than SMART. Finally we propose an extension of ST scheme, called secure coverage tree (SCT) construction scheme. SCT applies sleep scheduling. Through simulations, we show the efficacy and efficiency of the SCT scheme. Beside the work on secure and privacy preserving data aggregation, during my research period, we have also worked on another interesting topic (i.e., composite event detection for WSNs). Appendix B presents a complementary work on composite event detection for WSNs.

Book Energy Efficient Protocols for the IEEE 802 15 4 Enabled Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Energy Efficient Protocols for the IEEE 802 15 4 Enabled Wireless Sensor Networks written by Abdul Haffiz Shuaib and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instruments that observe entire systems in situ, using a relatively large number of interconnected and inexpensive nodes are expected to be enabled primarily by Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). These instruments place certain service demands on the underlying network e.g. connectivity, coverage, quality of service assurance arid energy efficient utilization. The IEEE 802.15.4 Low Rate Wireless Personal Area Network (LR-WPAN) specification is kitted with components that can deliver (or at least provide support for the delivery of) these services. As this specification is relatively new, with the first version released in 2003. a revision in 2006 and an update in 2007, it was incumbent that its operational mechanisms were well understood, to allow for efficient cross layer interaction between the different processes that make up the specification and existing or new higher layer protocols. To that end. in this thesis, we created a model of the specification that captured all but one of its functional requirements i.e. the security component. We studied and evaluated this model using a combination of a high fidelity simulation and mathematical tools. From these studies, we were able to identify areas in which the specification could be improved upon without extensive modification. Also identified were areas of cross layer interactions. The knowledge gained from the above was used to propose and evaluate three higher layer mechanisms/protocols including; a scalable dynamic topology control algorithm, a routing and transport protocol. All of which leveraged the services offered by the IEEE 802.15.4 specification to deliver on the objectives required of a WSN. These proposed higher layer mechanisms/protocols were thoroughly evaluated in order to demonstrate their flexibility, scalability and energy efficiency capabilities.

Book Topology Control in Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Topology Control in Wireless Sensor Networks written by Pedro Mario Wightman Rojas and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) offer a flexible low-cost solution to the problem of event monitoring, especially in places with limited accessibility or that represent danger to humans. WSNs are made of resource-constrained wireless devices, which require energy efficient mechanisms, algorithms and protocols. One of these mechanisms is Topology Control (TC) composed of two mechanisms, Topology Construction and Topology Maintenance. This dissertation expands the knowledge of TC in many ways. First, it introduces a comprehensive taxonomy for topology construction and maintenance algorithms for the first time. Second, it includes four new topology construction protocols: A3, A3Lite, A3Cov and A3LiteCov. These protocols reduce the number of active nodes by building a Connected Dominating Set (CDS) and then turning off unnecessary nodes. The A3 and A3-Lite protocols guarantee a connected reduced structure in a very energy efficient manner. The A3Cov and A3LiteCov protocols are extensions of their predecessors that increase the sensing coverage of the network. All these protocols are distributed -they do not require localization information, and present low message and computational complexity. Third, this dissertation also includes and evaluates the performance of four topology maintenance protocols: Recreation (DGTRec), Rotation (SGTRot), Rotation and Recreation (HGTRotRec), and Dynamic Local-DSR (DLDSR). Finally, an event-driven simulation tool named Atarraya was developed for teaching, researching and evaluating topology control protocols, which fills a need in the area of topology control that other simulators cannot. Atarraya was used to implement all the topology construction and maintenance cited, and to evaluate their performance. The results show that A3Lite produces a similar number of active nodes when compared to A3, while spending less energy due to its lower message complexity. A3Cov and A3CovLite show better or similar coverage than the other distributed protocols discussed here, while preserving the connectivity and energy efficiency from A3 and A3Lite. In terms of network lifetime, depending on the scenarios, it is shown that there can be a substantial increase in the network lifetime of 450% when a topology construction method is applied, and of 3200% when both topology construction and maintenance are applied, compared to the case where no topology control is used.

Download or read book Energy Management in Wireless Sensor Networks written by Youcef Touati and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy Management in Wireless Sensor Networks discusses this unavoidable issue in the application of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). To guarantee efficiency and durability in a network, the science must go beyond hardware solutions and seek alternative software solutions that allow for better data control from the source to delivery. Data transfer must obey different routing protocols, depending on the application type and network architecture. The correct protocol should allow for fluid information flow, as well as optimizing power consumption and resources – a challenge faced by dense networks. The topics covered in this book provide answers to these needs by introducing and exploring computer-based tools and protocol strategies for low power consumption and the implementation of routing mechanisms which include several levels of intervention, ranging from deployment to network operation. Explores ways to manage energy consumption during the design and implementation of WSN Helps users implement an increase in network longevity Presents intrinsic characteristics of wireless sensor networks
