Book Energy efficient Communication Strategies for Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Energy efficient Communication Strategies for Wireless Sensor Networks written by Yujie Zhu and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are characterized by limited amount of energy supply at sensor nodes. Hence, energy efficiency is an important issue in system design and operation of WSNs. In this work we focus on solving the energy efficiency problems of data gathering processes in WSNs. We first address this problem on a macroscopic level by investigating the efficiency of data gathering trees when data sent by different sensors are correlated. Such correlation aware data gathering strategies typically shift the aggregation structure from a default shortest-path tree (SPT) to a steiner minimum tree (SMT) in order to achieve the required efficiency. We study the energy efficiency of correlation aware data aggregation trees under various sensor network conditions and the tradeoffs involved in using them. Comprehensive simulation results as well as inferences and theoretical analysis of those results are presented in the thesis. Based on the insights gained through the investigation, we propose a simple, scalable and distributed correlation aware aggregation structure that achieves good energy performance across a wide range of sensor network configurations, and at the same time addresses the practical challenges of establishing a correlation aware data aggregation structure in resource-constrained WSNs. On a microscopic level, we propose a novel communication strategy called Communication through Silence (CtS) to achieve energy-efficient data gathering without significant degradation on overall throughput in WSNs. The proposed scheme primarily uses time, along with a minimal amount of energy to deliver information among sensors. CtS can be used to replace the conventional energy-based transmissions between each pair of sensor nodes during a data gathering process. We analyze in detail the primary energy-throughput tradeoff inherent in this approach as well as other challenges related to the realization of the proposed communication strategy. Finally, we propose a practical realization of CtS strategy that includes radio technology, MAC layer, and higher layer solutions. Performance evaluation results prove that this solution effectively realizes the CtS strategy in a WSN setting, at the same time achieves considerable energy savings compared to conventional communication strategies.

Book Energy Efficient Strategies for Wireless Sensor Networks with Varying Connectivity Properties

Download or read book Energy Efficient Strategies for Wireless Sensor Networks with Varying Connectivity Properties written by Clement Kam and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are envisioned as an approach to a wide variety of monitoring applications. From environmental monitoring to military surveillance, the range of scenarios is diverse, as are the constraints on the networking problem. In most cases, these wireless systems are energy-constrained, and it is impractical or infeasible to replace or recharge the batteries. These systems must be designed with the goal of energy efficiency. In this work, we investigate energy efficient approaches for WSNs that exhibit a variety of connectivity properties. We study three categories of WSNs in particular. In the traditional view of multi-hop sensor networks, there is a large number of sensor nodes with end-to-end connectivity, and they use multi-hop communication. We also consider dense, small-scale sensor networks, in which there are only a few nodes, and communication is primarily single-hop. Lastly, we look at sparse sensor networks, known as a delay- or disruption-tolerant network (DTN). These networks lack end-to-end connectivity, and must rely on mobility to make connections to route data. With these three categories of WSNs, we consider approaches that are specifically applied to each unique scenario. For multi-hop WSNs, we use a distributed approach to Kalman filtering for target tracking. By moving the signal processing onto the local nodes, the RF communication, which typically consumes the most power, is reduced. Through simulation, we evaluate the tracking performance. For our approach to dense, small-scale networks, we exploit the fact that multi-hop communication is rarely needed. We implement a hybrid MAC/routing protocol that assumes that routing is only needed on rare occasions, thus reducing the idle listening energy consumption. For sparse DTNs, we developed a power management scheme that uses the local information available to determine a node's likelihood of delivery, which is used to decide if a node should sleep or listen/beacon. We evaluate these two categories of WSNs through simulation and some experimental work (for the small-scale case), and we show significant gains in energy efficiency over existing approaches.

Book An Energy Efficient and Dynamic Security Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book An Energy Efficient and Dynamic Security Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks written by Adil Bashir and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-07-21 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, grade: 8.12, , course: M. Tech, language: English, abstract: Wireless sensor network (WSN) is an emerging imperious leading technology of the current century that presents great promise for various pioneering applications. The use of sensor networks should keep developing, mainly in the fields of scientific, logistic, healthcare and military applications. Sensor networks interact and collect sensitive data and operate in unattended hostile environments, thus it is imperative to pay attention to the security of wireless sensor networks as they are highly prone to threats. For successful operation of the nodes, it is important to maintain the security and privacy of the transmitted data as well as the data stored at nodes. The different security protocols and models used in the wired and other wireless networks such as ad-hoc networks cannot be used in WSNs because the sensor size poses significant restrictions, mainly in terms of energy autonomy and node lifetime, as the batteries have to be too tiny. Also, the existing security protocols in these constrained networks are not sufficiently energy efficient, which is the real motivation behind this work. In this thesis, a light-weight dynamic security algorithm titled “An Energy Efficient and Dynamic Security Protocol (EEDSP)” for wireless sensor networks has been proposed and implemented at nodal level. We also implement an existing algorithm and then carry out the performance analysis of both the algorithms in terms of energy consumptions, node lifetime and memory requirements at source and intermediate nodes to verify the improvement in our protocol’s results.

Book Mobile Wireless and Sensor Networks

Download or read book Mobile Wireless and Sensor Networks written by Amine Dahane and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless networking covers a variety of topics involving many challenges. The main concern of clustering approaches for mobile wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is to prolong the battery life of the individual sensors and the network lifetime. For a successful clustering approach, the need of a powerful mechanism to safely elect a cluster head remains a challenging task in many research works that take into account the mobility of the network. In Mobile, Wireless and Sensor Networks: A Clustering Algorithm for Energy Efficiency and Safety, the authors use an approach based on computing of the weight of each node in the network as the proposed technique to deal with this problem. They present a virtual laboratory platform (VLP) of baptized mercury, allowing students and researchers to make practical work (PW) on different aspects of mobile wireless sensor networks. The authors’ choice of WSNs is motivated mainly by the use of real experiments needed in most college courses on WSNs. These usual experiments, however, require an expensive investment and many nodes in the classroom. The platform presented here aims at showing the feasibility, the flexibility, and the reduced cost using the authors’ approach. The authors demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithms that contribute to the familiarization of the learners in the field of WSNs. The book will be a valuable resource for students in networking studies as well as for faculty and researchers in this area.
