Book National Best Practices Manual for Building High Performance Schools

Download or read book National Best Practices Manual for Building High Performance Schools written by US Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Department of Energy's Rebuild America EnergySmart Schools program provides school boards, administrators, and design staff with guidance to help make informed decisions about energy and environmental issues important to school systems and communities. "The National Best Practices Manual for Building High Performance Schools" is a part of the suite of products developed to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy in schools. It was developed specifically for architects and engineers who are responsible for designing or retrofitting schools, and for the project managers who work with the design teams. The "Energy Design Guidelines for High Performance Schools," available for seven climate zones across the United States, was developed for school boards, administrators, and design staff to help make informed design decisions about energy and environmental issues important to school systems and communities. The design strategies presented here are organized into 10 chapters covering important design disciplines and goals: site design; daylighting and windows; energy-efficient building shell; lighting and electrical systems; mechanical and ventilation systems; renewable energy systems; water conservation; recycling systems and waste management; transportation; and resource-efficient building products. An additional chapter addresses commissioning and maintenance practices. Applying these guidelines will result in schools that are healthy, comfortable, energy efficient, resource efficient, water efficient, safe, secure, adaptable, and easy to operate and maintain. This manual provides details and implementation rules for individual design strategies. Though these individual strategies can improve a building's energy efficiency, only through whole-building analysis and integrated design can energy and cost concerns be balanced most effectively. A list of commissioning references and resources is included. Most chapters contain tables, footnotes, figures, and references. [The National Best Practices Manual for High Performance Schools was adapted from the Collaborative for High Performance Schools Inc.'s Best Practices Manual, Volume II. Modifications were developed by Eley Associates and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The adaptation was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Building Technology, State and Community Programs. The commissioning section of this manual is a modified version of the Building Commissioning Guidelines prepared for Pacific Gas & Electric Company by Portland Energy Conservation, Inc. for the Energy Design Resources program. Certain sections of this document were excerpted and modified from Commissioning for Better Buildings in Oregon, written by PECI for the Oregon Office of Energy, and Building Commissioning: The Key to Quality Assurance, written by PECI for the U.S. Department of Energy's Rebuild America program.].

Engineers, architects, designers, students, policy makers and efficiency professionals will all gain valuable insights and ideas from this practical handbook to greening the built environment.

Book Improving Energy Efficiency in Buildings

Download or read book Improving Energy Efficiency in Buildings written by Dennis R. Landsberg and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1980-01-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for practical application, this book provides a guide for reducing energy consumption in those buildings that were constructed when the cost of construction, not the cost of operation, was of primary concern. Now that the "Golden Age of Energy" is over, the heating, lighting, and ventilation systems of these buildings must be adapted to present and future economic circumstances. Landsberg and Stewart approach the problem of reducing energy consumption in these buildings by providing users of this book with solutions ranging from simple measures that cost nothing to complex modifications that must be given a cost-benefit analysis. The appendixes define energy basics for those who have little or no engineering background; evaluate alternative energy systems; and analyze the basic economic decisions of making changes in a building's energy consumption. The sample forms used for energy audits of buildings in New York State that can be adapted for use in other states and for private buildings are also included.

Book Energy Conservation in Residential Commercial and Industrial Facilities

Download or read book Energy Conservation in Residential Commercial and Industrial Facilities written by Hossam A. Gabbar and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative and comprehensive guide to managing energy conservation in infrastructures Energy Conservation in Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Facilities offers an essential guide to the business models and engineering design frameworks for the implementation of energy conservation in infrastructures. The presented models of both physical and technological systems can be applied to a wide range of structures such as homes, hotels, public facilities, industrial facilities, transportation, and water/energy supply systems. The authors—noted experts in the field—explore the key performance indicators that are used to evaluate energy conservation strategies and the energy supply scenarios as part of the design and operation of energy systems in infrastructures. The text is based on a systems approach that demonstrates the effective management of building energy knowledge and supports the simulation, evaluation, and optimization of several building energy conservation scenarios. In addition, the authors explore new methods of developing energy semantic network (ESN) superstructures, energy conservation optimization techniques, and risk-based life cycle assessments. This important text: Defines the most effective ways to model the infrastructure of physical and technological systems Includes information on the most widely used techniques in the validation and calibration of building energy simulation Offers a discussion of the sources, quantification, and reduction of uncertainty Presents a number of efficient energy conservation strategies in infrastructure systems, including HVAC, lighting, appliances, transportation, and industrial facilities Describes illustrative case studies to demonstrate the proposed energy conservation framework, practices, methods, engineering designs, control, and technologies Written for students studying energy conservation as well as engineers designing the next generation of buildings, Energy Conservation in Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Facilities offers a wide-ranging guide to the effective management of energy conservation in infrastructures.

Book Energy Efficiency and Energy Use in Schools

Download or read book Energy Efficiency and Energy Use in Schools written by Stacey Tabert and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world faces the effects of climate change, countries are confronted with the challenge of how to adjust from a culture of excessive energy consumption and high greenhouse gas emissions to one of minimising their environmental footprint and achieving sustainability. Large-scale renewable energy infrastructure initiatives, such as solar school programs, are being promoted as a way to reduce national greenhouse gas emissions and increase awareness of the need for energy conservation. Unfortunately, little is known about the relationship between installing renewable energy technology on school buildings and the practice of energy saving strategies in schools. This work examines whether installing solar power systems is an effective catalyst for stimulating energy saving strategies in schools by investigating the findings from a mixed-methods study of a solar schools initiative in Australia. The question of whether schools with solar power installations come to view (attitudes) and use (behaviours) energy differently from schools without renewable energy technology is examined. A number of barriers to the implementation of successful solar school programs are a also identified.
