Book excerpt: The differential cross section was measured for $pi$$sup -$p $Yields$ p$pi$$sup -$ near the backward direction for incident laboratory momenta between 3.0 and 5.5 GeV/c. Preliminary results are reported at cos theta* approximately - 0.96. Evidence is seen for $delta$(2850) and $delta$(3230); however, no evidence was found for the narrow resonance at P/sub lab/ approximately 5.12 GeV/c reported by Kormanyos et al. (auth).

Book excerpt: Differential cross sections were measured for .pi./sup -/p .-->. p.pi./sup -/ and .pi./sup -/p .-->. .delta./sup +/(1236).pi./sup -/ in the four-momentum transfer interval -0.05 greater than u' greater than -0.6 (GeV/c)/sup 2/ at 14 beam momenta between 3.0 and 5.5 GeV/c. The energy dependences of both reactions in this u'-interval exhibit broad fluctuations. The narrow baryon resonance at 3245 MeV/c/sup 2/ reported by Kormanyos et al. is not observed in these data. The elastic scattering data were also examined for the existence of Ericson fluctuations.
