Book Energy the Environment and the Oil Market

Download or read book Energy the Environment and the Oil Market written by Shankar Sharma and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1994 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this book review the environmental problems created by rising energy demand, and examine their impact on the oil industry especially in the Asia-Pacific region where future demand for oil is projected to increase the most. Policy options to minimize energy-related environmental problems are discussed. The contributors also address these questions: • What are the economic implications of emission control to developing countries, and the process, mechanism and constraints for multilateral agreement on the reduction of pollutants, particularly greenhouse gases • Within the broader context of oil price volatility, why has environmental concern created a need for dialogue between oil producers and consumers?

Book Winds of Change

Download or read book Winds of Change written by Xiaodong Wang and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-06-24 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Asia has experienced the fastest economic growth in the world over the last three decades, accompanied by a 10-fold gross domestic product increase and rapid urbanization. Energy consumption has more than tripled during this period and is expected to double over the next 20 years. This remarkable trend has led to twin energy challenges in the region environmental sustainability and energy security. Written for an audience of energy policy makers and practitioners, Winds of Change explores the region s energy future over the next two decades through two energy scenarios. It outlines the strategic direction East Asia s energy sector must take to meet its growing energy demand in an environmentally sustainable manner, and presents a pathway of policy frameworks and financing mechanisms to get there. The six East Asian countries China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam examined in this book could, with the right policies and financing, stabilize CO2 emissions by 2025, improve their local environment, and enhance energy security without compromising economic growth. They must move their energy sectors toward much higher efficiency and more widespread use of low-carbon technologies, while obtaining substantial financing and low-carbon technologies from developed countries. This clean energy revolution requires major policy and institutional reforms, including energy pricing reforms, regulations such as energy efficiency standards, financial incentives such as feed-in tariffs for renewable energy, and accelerated research and development. Finally, building low-carbon cities will be key to containing the rapid urban energy growth through compact urban design, public transport, clean vehicles, and green buildings. The window of opportunity is closing fast delaying action would lock the region into a longlasting high-carbon infrastructure. The technical and policy means exist for such transformational changes, but only strong political will and unprecedented international cooperation will make them happen.

Book The Energy Economy Link

Download or read book The Energy Economy Link written by William E. James and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1989-09-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected here, originally presented at a seminar cosponsored by the East-West Center and the Asian Productivity Organization, address the links between energy sector performance and economic development in the Asia-Pacific region. The contributors include senior-level government officials and researchers concerned with energy planning and economic development. Their aim throughout is to identify the major linkages that do exist, to assess the role of the energy sector in future development, and to discuss energy policy options that will optimize economic growth. Divided into five major sections, the volume begins with papers that explore regional issues of energy and economic development. Separate chapters are devoted to the effects of OPEC and oil price fluctuations, the relationship between energy and economic growth, energy trade in Asia and the Pacific, changes in the balance of payments and capital flows, and problems of property rights and petroleum exploration. The sections that follow present case studies of individual Pacific and Asian countries, organized by region. Particular attention is paid to the effects of increasing interdependencies within the region and to the relative success of policies developed in response to the long-term outlook for oil supplies and prices. Students of energy economics and Asian development will find The Energy-Economy Link invaluable reading.

Download or read book Asian Energy Markets written by The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research and published by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. This book was released on 2004-08-23 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy has become a crucial determinant shaping the security environment of Asia. The continent's phenomenal growth is projected to raise oil and gas consumption to dramatic new levels. As major Asian nations become net energy importers, this thirst for oil will determine world energy export patterns and shape regional geopolitics. With the Arabian Gulf supplying the major proportion of Asian energy needs, Gulf-Asia links will emerge as a key factor in the global energy scenario. Energy security concerns will dominate Asian economic policy and strategic decision making and spur Asian investment in oil exploration, oil refining and development of alternative energy sources. What are the economic and strategic implications of Asia's growing dependence on Gulf oil? How far can Asian countries counter such dependence by improving energy efficiency and developing new sources? What are the energy transitions that Asian nations are undergoing? What kind of structural reforms are needed in the Asian energy markets? What are the implications of Asian energy consumption trends and current economic reforms for the Arabian Gulf producers? What will the impact of Asian markets be on the global energy scenario? These and related issues were examined by energy experts at the Seventh Annual Energy Conference held in Abu Dhabi from January 13-14, 2002. This volume of conference presentations discusses wide-ranging issues relating to the Asian energy sector including supply security, consumption trends, privatization moves, energy diversification, energy self-sufficiency and foreign investment.
