Book Energy Conversion Including Magnetoaerodynamic Studies and Thermionic Converters Thermionic Converter Studies

Download or read book Energy Conversion Including Magnetoaerodynamic Studies and Thermionic Converters Thermionic Converter Studies written by R. C. HORN and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A plane-parallel cesium thermionic converter was constructed, and is about to be put into operation. A second converter, which permits spectrographic determination of cesium species temperatures and densities, was designed. Analytical stu ies of plasma and she th phenomena occurring in high pressure operation of a converter are in progress. Elastic scat ering cross sections and momentum transfer cross sections for collisions of low energy were calculated and a report was issued. A literature survey of transition probabilities for transitions from the ground state in cesium was conducted a d a tabulation of experimental values made. (Author).

Book Energy Conversion Including Magnetoaerodynamic Studies and Thermionic Converters Electrical Propulsion and Electrical Energy Conversion Investigations

GRABOWSKY and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two possible methods of measuring arc jet plasma were investigated. The steady-state arc method leads to erroneous results due to deposits on the walls of the plasma container. The pos ibility of measuring the decay time of the plasma also was investigated. The method requires a switching on the order of 10 to the -10th power sec for a 1-mho/cm plasma. The exploded wire propulsion device was set up and instrumented. Closed-cycle magnetohydrodynamic vortex generator studies show that the specific power of the system will be much greater than that of a conventional turbogenerator for power levels on the order of 50 kw and greater. Possible containing and insulating materials, as well as working fluids, were investigated and feasible combinations obtained. Preliminary experiments were designed to evaluate the proposed configurations.

Book excerpt: Prepared under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy Division of Power Systems. Volume I of Thermionic Energy Conversiondealt with processes and devices (MIT Press, 1974). Its four chapters summarized information basic to the field and not subject to substantial alteration by future developments. Volume II begins with chapter 5 and describes the scientific and engineering aspects of thermionic conversion and the experience with actual operational hardware. It summarizes the experience and analytic methods that should be useful in the development of new applications of thermionic conversion. Thermionic Energy Conversionis intended for scientists and engineers working in the field of energy conversion. With increased interest in maximizing the efficiency of present energy conversion systems, it is an important reference for scientific and engineering libraries as well. The book benefits especially from the authors' actual experience-Hatsopoulos and his firm, Thermo Electron Corporation, are leaders in this field. Gyftopoulos and his students have made basic contributions to the theory of thermionic conversion. Both authors have developed a unified quantum theory of mechanics and thermodynamics. The book covers Elements of Quantum Mechanics; Principles of Thermodynamics; Thermodynamics of Stable Equilibrium States; Thermodynamics of Steady States; Emission Phenomena; Collisionless Transport Phenomena; Analysis of Performance Characteristics of High-Pressure Diodes; Experimental Techniques; Experimental Studies and Correlations of Characteristics; Metallurgy of Electrode Materials; Design and Fabrication of Practical Convertors; and Thermionic Power System Engineering.

Book RESEARCH ON THERMIONIC CONVERTERS

Download or read book RESEARCH ON THERMIONIC CONVERTERS written by GENERAL ELECTRIC CO SCHENECTADY N Y. and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermionic conversion involves the generation of electricity from thermal energy utilizing the phenomenon of thermionic emission of electrons, and requires no moving parts. Three basically different types of converters were the subjects of wide study: (1) vacuum converters which have now been developed to the product design stage for cathode temperatures in the range of 1100 to 1150 C, anode temperatures 600 to 700 C and electrical power outputs of 0.2 watt/ sq cm (min.) at an efficiency o 2.5%; (2) vapor converters which have been are developed for solar space power with an efficiency of 15% at a cathode temperature of 1800 C; and (3) crossed-field converters which utilize a combination of electric and magnetic fields to direct the electron flow from cathode to anode in the converter. This particular line of development did not appear to be fruitful, and further work was not recommended on the crossed-field approach. (Author).

Book Basic Research in Thermionic Energy Conversion

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The program was directed toward an understanding of the fundamental processes occurring in thermionic energy converters and the effects of these processes on overall converter performance. A theoretical approach was studied for solving the equations which describe the wide spaced diode. In the past these equations have not been solvable with available techniques. With some reservations the new computer results agree with available experimental data. Secondly, the trapping of ions in potential wells was studied and a new criterion has been developed which relates parameters associated with double sheath emission barriers. This criterion will be useful in deciding the essential physics of converters operating below the knee of the I-V curve. (Author).

Book High Voltage Thermionic Converters

Download or read book High Voltage Thermionic Converters written by General Motors Corporation. Allison Division and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several emitter materials, tantalum, tungsten and rhenium, and two emitter geometries, planar and excess area were evaluated in a flexible laboratory thermionic converter design. Results are reported from six converters that were tested for a total of 1070 hr. Experimental results from the excess area emitter converters did not exhibit the current enhancement observed in multicapillary and slotted emitter converters developed on a previous Air Force contract. While the electron currents in the passive mode at relatively low cesium pressure were in qualitative agreement with theory, the actual current densities obtained were not high enough to produce practical power densities at high output voltage. The method of emitter fabrication which used a niobium braze material appears to be a primary reason for the low performance.

Book STUDIES ON THERMIONIC ENERGY CONVERSION

Download or read book STUDIES ON THERMIONIC ENERGY CONVERSION written by John M. Houston and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work described in the report was divided into nine sections. The first two sections deal with the thermionic emission of the platinum and thorium group metals in cesium vapor. Sections III through V treat investigation of the optical emissivity, vacuum work function, and diffusion in tungsten of osmium metal. Sections VI and VII describe experiments with a double crystal thermionic converter and the wetting of several metals by liquid cesium and sodium, respectively. Sections VIII and IX are concerned with low-energy electron diffraction dealing, respectively, with a new type of low-energy electron diffraction system and an electron diffraction analogue by using light diffraction with two-dimensional lattices.
