Book Energy Conversion Ideal vs Real Operation Technical Background

Download or read book Energy Conversion Ideal vs Real Operation Technical Background written by Engineering Software and published by Engineering Software. This book was released on with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The simple and basic power cycles (Brayton Cycle, Otto Cycle and Diesel Cycle), power cycle components/processes (compression, combustion and expansion) and compressible flow components (nozzle, diffuser and thrust) are presented in this technical background material. In the presented power cycles, power cycle components/process and compressible flow components analysis, air is used as the working fluid. For each power cycle, the thermal efficiency derivation is presented with a simple mathematical approach. Also, for each power cycle, a T - s diagram and cycle major performance trends (thermal efficiency, specific power output and power output) are plotted in a few figures as a function of compression ratio, turbine inlet temperature and/or final combustion temperature, working fluid mass flow rate and both isentropic compression and expansion efficiency. It should be noted that this course material does not deal with costs (capital, operational or maintenance). For compression and expansion, the technical performance of mentioned power cycle components/processes for ideal and real operation is presented with a given relationship between pressure and temperature and compression and expansion efficiency. Complete combustion at constant pressure with and without heat loss is presented. Six different fuels (carbon, hydrogen, sulfur, coal, oil and gas) react with air as the oxidant at different stoichiometry values (stoichiometry => 1) and oxidant inlet temperature values. Reactants and combustion products enthalpy values change with an increase in the temperature and such enthalpy values are presented in a plot where one can notice fuel higher heating value (HHV) and flame temperature definitions. Physical properties of basic combustion reactants and products are presented in an enthalpy vs temperature plot. The combustion technical performance at stoichiometry => 1 conditions is presented knowing the enthalpy values for combustion reactants and products, given as a function of temperature. Combustion products composition on both weight and mole basis is given in tabular form and plotted in a few figures. Also, flame temperature, oxidant to fuel ratio and fuel higher heating value (HHV) are presented in tabular form and plotted in a few figures. The provided output data and plots allow one to determine the major combustion performance laws and trends. The technical performance of compressible flow components (subsonic nozzle, diffuser and thrust) is presented with a given relationship between temperature and pressure as a function of the Mach Number and isentropic nozzle and diffuser efficiency. The compressible flow components T - s diagrams and their major performance trends (stagnation over static temperature and pressure ratio values) are plotted in a few figures as a function of the Mach Number. In this technical background material, one gets familiar with the simple and basic power cycles and power cycle components/processes, compressible flow components and their T - s and h - T diagrams, ideal vs real operation and major performance trends.

Book Biomass as Energy Source

Download or read book Biomass as Energy Source written by Erik Dahlquist and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global energy use is approximately 140 000 TWh per year. Interestingly, biomass production amounts to approximately 270 000 TWh per year, or roughly twice as much, whereas the official figure of biomass use for energy applications is 10-13% of the global energy use. This shows that biomass is not a marginal energy resource but more than capable of

Book Model Predictive Control of Wind Energy Conversion Systems

Download or read book Model Predictive Control of Wind Energy Conversion Systems written by Venkata Yaramasu and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Model Predictive Control of Wind Energy Conversion Systems addresses the predicative control strategy that has emerged as a promising digital control tool within the field of power electronics, variable-speed motor drives, and energy conversion systems. The authors provide a comprehensive analysis on the model predictive control of power converters employed in a wide variety of variable-speed wind energy conversion systems (WECS). The contents of this book includes an overview of wind energy system configurations, power converters for variable-speed WECS, digital control techniques, MPC, modeling of power converters and wind generators for MPC design. Other topics include the mapping of continuous-time models to discrete-time models by various exact, approximate, and quasi-exact discretization methods, modeling and control of wind turbine grid-side two-level and multilevel voltage source converters. The authors also focus on the MPC of several power converter configurations for full variable-speed permanent magnet synchronous generator based WECS, squirrel-cage induction generator based WECS, and semi-variable-speed doubly fed induction generator based WECS. Furthermore, this book: Analyzes a wide variety of practical WECS, illustrating important concepts with case studies, simulations, and experimental results Provides a step-by-step design procedure for the development of predictive control schemes for various WECS configurations Describes continuous- and discrete-time modeling of wind generators and power converters, weighting factor selection, discretization methods, and extrapolation techniques Presents useful material for other power electronic applications such as variable-speed motor drives, power quality conditioners, electric vehicles, photovoltaic energy systems, distributed generation, and high-voltage direct current transmission. Book Low tech Magazine 2012 2018

Download or read book Low tech Magazine 2012 2018 written by Kris De Decker and published by Kris De Decker. This book was released on 2019-03-18 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-tech Magazine underscores the potential of past and often forgotten technologies and how they can inform sustainable energy practices. Sometimes, past technologies can be copied without any changes. More often, interesting possibilities arise when older technology is combined with new knowledge and new materials, or when past concepts and traditional knowledge are applied to modern technology. Inspiration is also to be found in the so-called “developing” world, where resource constraints often lead to inventive, low-tech solutions.
