Book Adaptive Control for Energy Conservation

Download or read book Adaptive Control for Energy Conservation written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of adaptive control techniques is investigated in heating, ventilating, and air cnditioning (HVAC) systems in solar heated and cooled buildings to minimize the consumption of auxiliary energy. Optimal control theory is used in conjunction with the adaptive control techniques to accomplish the minimization of auxiliary energy. The resulting technique is referred to as adaptive optimal control (AOC). This study has been made by computer simulation and is centered on the National Security and Resources Study Center (NSRSC), a large solar heated and cooled building at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL). Simplified models of the building and HVAC system have been developed for both the heating and cooling modes. The control strategies actually used in the NSRSC were simulated in the models and an adaptive optimal controller was developed and also simulated. Simulation runs were made with both the conventional controller and the adaptive controller and performance results of the two simulations were compared. In the first results (obtained using a partial derivative system identification method), the adaptive optimal controller model demonstrated a savings in auxiliary energy of 28.8% for the heating simulation and 18.3% for the cooling simulation when compared to the conventional controller simulation models.

Book Energy Conservation Through Adaptive Optimal Control for a Solar Heated and Cooled Building

Download or read book Energy Conservation Through Adaptive Optimal Control for a Solar Heated and Cooled Building written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study to investigate the use of adaptive and optimal control techniques to control HVAC systems in large solar heated and cooled buildings is reported. The study has been made by computer simulation and is centered on the National Security and Resources Study Center (NSRSC), a large solar heated and cooled building at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL). Although the study is based on a specific building the results are completely general. Simplified models of the building and HVAC system have been developed for both the heating and cooling modes. The control strategies actually used in the NSRSC were simulated in the models and an adaptive optimal controller was developed and also simulated. Simulation runs were made with both the conventional controller and the adaptive controller and performance of the two simulations were compared. It was found that the adaptive optimal controller model demonstrated a savings in auxiliary energy of 28.8% for the heating simulation and 20.2% for the cooling simulation when compared to the conventional controller simulation models.

Book Solar Thermal Technologies for Buildings

Download or read book Solar Thermal Technologies for Buildings written by M. Santamouris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar thermal is now a proven technology in terms of reliability, cost-benefit, and low environmental impact. The integration of solar thermal systems and installations into the design of buildings can provide a clean, efficient and sustainable low-energy solution for heating and cooling, whilst, taken in a wider context, contributing to climate protection. This book covers the state of the art in the application of solar thermal technologies for buildings. This is the first book in the BEST (Buildings, Energy and Solar Technology) Series. This series presents high-quality theoretical and application-oriented material on solar energy and energy-efficient technologies. Leading international experts cover the strategies and technologies that form the basis of high-performance, sustainable buildings, crucial to enhancing our built and urban environment.

Book Running Buildings on Natural Energy

Download or read book Running Buildings on Natural Energy written by Sue Roaf and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New thinking is essential if we are to design and occupy buildings that can keep us safe with unpredictable economies, climates, energy systems and resource challenges. For too long designers have relied on mechanical solutions for heating, cooling and ventilating buildings. The 21st century dream has to be of a better architecture that enables buildings to be run for as much of a day or year as possible on local, clean, reliable, affordable natural energy. Examples are included from different climates where the fundamental building design is right, its orientation, opening sizes, mass and its natural ventilation systems and pathways. Many modern buildings are poorly designed for climate as manifested by growing incidences of overheating experienced indoor, explored here. The inability of many rating systems to record and improve the climatic design of buildings raises questions about how they deal with issues of basic building performance. This books points the way towards how we can understand such problems, and move forward from over-mechanised poorly designed buildings to a new generation of adaptable buildings designed and refurbished to run largely on natural energy and capable of evolving over time to keep their occupants safe and comfortable, even in a warming world. The chapters were originally published in Architectural Science Review.
