Book Understanding the Human Factor of the Energy Transition Mechanisms Underlying Energy Relevant Decisions and Behaviors

Download or read book Understanding the Human Factor of the Energy Transition Mechanisms Underlying Energy Relevant Decisions and Behaviors written by Tobias Brosch and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing number of countries are shifting toward sustainable energy economies, emphasizing the use of renewable energy sources, increases in energy efficiency and the abatement of greenhouse gas emissions. The success of such an energy transition will depend not only on the development of new energy technologies, but also on major changes in the patterns of individual energy-related decisions and behaviors resulting in substantial reductions in energy demand. Consequently, the behavioral sciences can make important contributions to the energy transition by increasing our understanding of the multiple factors and mechanisms that underlie individual as well as group-based decisions and behaviors in the energy domain and by creating a basis for systematic interventions that reduce energy usage. Many different types of relevant behaviors and decisions need to be considered in this context, including decisions to invest in energy-efficient household equipment, adjustments of energy-critical habits related to heating, eating, or mode of transportation, and participation in the political discourse related to questions of energy. An integration of the expertise of the different disciplines of the behavioral sciences is thus needed to comprehensively investigate the impact of the different drivers and barriers that may determine energy-related decisions and behaviors, including economic factors such as price level, social factors such as norms, communication patterns and social learning processes, and individual factors such as values, attitudes, beliefs, heuristics, affective biases and emotions. The potential impact of these factors on the success of the energy transition is considerable: for example, a recent projection of the energy demand in Switzerland until 2050 has estimated the reduction potential related to psychological and sociological factors between 0% and 30%, depending on which behavioral changes will be implemented in society. Increased research efforts from the behavioral sciences are required to ensure that the full reduction potential can be achieved. This Research Topic brings together contributions from different disciplines such as psychology, affective science, behavioral economics, economics, sociology, consumer behavior, business science, sociology, and political science, that improve our understanding of the many factors underlying decision-making and behavior in the energy domain, and contribute to the development of targeted interventions that aim at reducing energy demand based on these factors.

Book Surveying Climate Relevant Behavior

Download or read book Surveying Climate Relevant Behavior written by Markus Hadler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-12 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book discusses the contribution of sociology and survey research to climate research. The authors address the questions of which behaviors are of climate relevance, who is engaging in these behaviors, in which contexts do these behaviors occur, and which individual perceptions and values are related to them. Utilizing survey research, the book focuses on the measurement of climate-relevant behaviors with population surveys and develops an instrument that allows a valid estimate of an individual’s GHG emissions with a few core items. While the development of these instruments was based on surveys and qualitative interviews conducted in Austria, the instruments were subsequently tested in a set of 31 European countries, revealing the international relevance of such research. The book also concludes with a brief consideration of the effects of the COVID-19 crisis on environmental attitudes, situating the project globally.

Download or read book Energy and Behavior written by Marta Lopes and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-11 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes to energy behaviour -- the role of people and organisations in energy production, use and efficiency -- are critical to supporting a societal transition towards a low carbon and more sustainable future. However, which changes need to be made, by whom, and with what technologies are still very much under discussion. This book, developed by a diverse range of experts, presents an international and multi-faceted approach to the sociotechnical challenge of engaging people in energy systems and vice versa. By providing a multidisciplinary view of this field, it encourages critical thinking about core theories, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, and policy challenges. It concludes by addressing new areas where additional evidence is required for interventions and policy-making. It is designed to appeal to new entrants in the energy-efficiency and behaviour field, particularly those taking a quantitative approach to the topic. Concurrently, it recognizes ecological economist Herman Daly's insight: what really counts is often not countable. Introduces the major disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding energy and behaviour Delivers a cross-sectoral overview including energy behaviour in buildings, industry, transportation, smart grids, and smart cities Reviews a selection of innovative energy behaviour modelling approaches, including agent-based modelling, optimization, and decision support Critically addresses the importance of interventions, policies, and regulatory design

Book excerpt: Energy Psychology: Explorations at the Interface of Energy, Cognition, Behavior, and Health traces the roots of energy psychology, contrasts it with contemporary approaches, explores the interface with cognition and behavior, and provides instruction in treatment applications. The author, a noted psychologist and psychotherapist with over 28 years of clinical experience, who has presented nationwide seminars and written extensively on Thought Field Therapy (TFT), begins with an overview of current psychological paradigms. He investigates the body's energy paradigm, focusing on the relevance of acupuncture, homeopathy, prayer, and applied kinesiology to energy therapy. Energy Psychology: Explorations at the Interface of Energy, Cognition, Behavior, and Health explores psychological problems as manifestations of energy disruptions or energy configurations that can be precisely diagnosed and treated.
