Book Energetics of Biological Macromolecules

Download or read book Energetics of Biological Macromolecules written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1998-09-09 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Description of the Volume: The very existence of biological structures and their functional interactions are dictated by energetic relationships. Thus the central theme of this volume is that thermodynamic methods, i.e. techniques that probe the energetics of biological macromolecules, now comprise a powerful and practical family of tools for research in modern biology. The application of thermodynamics and statistical thermodynamics to biochemical and biophysical systems is presented. This volume supplements Methods in Enzymology, Volume 259. General Description of the Series: The critically acclaimed laboratory standard for more than forty years, Methods in Enzymology is one of the most highly respected publications in the field of biochemistry. Since 1955, each volume has been eagerly awaited, frequently consulted, and praised by researchers and reviewers alike. Now with more than 300 volumes (all of them still in print), the series contains much material still relevant today--truly an essential publication for researchers in all fields of life sciences. Key Features * Major topics covered include: * Deciphering rules of helix stability in peptides * Protein Folding in Membranes * Molecular Crowding * Study of the Bohr Effect in Hemoglobin Intermediates * Photoacoustic Calorimetry of Proteins * Theoretical Aspects of Isothermal Titration Calorimetry * Energetic Methods to Study Bifunctional Biotin Repressor

Book Introducing Biological Energetics

Download or read book Introducing Biological Energetics written by Norman W. H. Cheetham and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-10-08 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel, interdisciplinary text presents biological understanding in terms of general underlying principles, treating energy as the overarching theme and emphasizing the all-pervading influence of energy transformation in every process, both living and non-living. Key processes and concepts are explained in turn, culminating in a description of the overall functioning and regulation of a living cell. The book rounds off the story of life with a brief account of the endosymbiotic origins of eukaryotic cells, the development of multicellularity, and the emergence of modern plants and animals. Multidisciplinary research in science is becoming commonplace. However, as traditional boundaries start to break down, researchers are increasingly aware of the deficiencies in their knowledge of related disciplines. Introducing Biological Energetics redresses the reciprocal imbalance in the knowledge levels of physical and biological scientists in particular. Its style of presentation and depth of treatment has been carefully designed to unite these two readerships.

Download or read book Binding and Linkage written by Jeffries Wyman and published by University Science Books. This book was released on 1990 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ligand-macromolecule interactions are of fundamental importance in the control of biological processes. This book applies the principles of linkage thermodynamics to polyfunctional macromolecular systems under equilibrium conditions, and describes the binding, linkage, and feedback phenomena that lead to control of complex metabolic processes. The first chapter sets out the different processes (conformational changes, changes in state of aggregation, phase changes) involving biological macromolecules which are affected by chemical variables (such as ligands) or physical variables (such as temperature and pressure). The general effects of ligands on micromolecular conformations and interactions are illustrated with specific examples from the respiratory proteins, electron-transport proteins, and nucleic acid binding proteins. Subsequent chapters develop these themes, and describe in detail how the mathematics of regulation and control can be applied to macromolecules in biological system.
