With the advent of a new generation of energetic polymers, this book is relevant to industry and defense organizations as well as for academic research.

Book Energetic Polymers and Plasticisers for Explosive Formulations

Download or read book Energetic Polymers and Plasticisers for Explosive Formulations written by Arthur Provatas and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to comply with Insensitive Munitions (IM) criteria, energetic binders comprising polymer and plasticiser(s) are finding use in cast-cured polymer bonded explosives and cast composite rocket propellants. Energetic binders can be considered as cross-linked polymers that provide a matrix to bind explosive ingredients together with a plasticiser. Once cured, the polymeric binder is a tough elastomeric rubber capable of absorbing and dissipating energy from hazardous stimuli, lending itself well to IM applications. This general document outlines the most promising energetic polymers and plasticisers being considered today. Attention is focussed on several energetic polymers including glycidyl azide polymer, GAP, poly(3-nitratomethyl-3-methyloxetane), polyNIMMO and poly(glycidyl nitrate), polyGLYN, although oligomers (low molecular weight) of the polymers mentioned above, as well as a variety of nitrate esters, nitroaromatics and azido plasticisers, will also be reviewed. Finally, the review will recommend binder systems for DSTO's future energetic binder programs.

Book Formulation and Performance Studies of Polymer Bonded Explosives PBX Containing Energetic Binder Systems

Download or read book Formulation and Performance Studies of Polymer Bonded Explosives PBX Containing Energetic Binder Systems written by Arthur Provatas and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: In an effort to comply with Insensitive Munitions (IM) criteria together with the expectation of increasing the warhead performance against specified targets, two part energetic binder systems comprising an energetic polymer and plasticiser that offer promise for future use in PBX (polymer bonded explosive) fills in high performance, tactical missiles have been investigated. Warhead fills within modern missiles such as ASRAAM (Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missiles) typically contain cast-cured PBXs comprising high energetics loadings in an inert binder matrix. The use of the inert binder, which comprises around 20% of the final formulation, dilutes the final energy output of the PBX. To this end, several energetic binder formulations have been developed that may offer potential use in ASRAAM type missiles. By use of energetic binders systems comprising polyGLYN and KIO or GLYN oligomer plasticiser, increases in performance parameters were observed. This technical report details the formulation of several PBXs developed to maximise casting density and processibility for potential use in ASRAAM warheads that may offer improved IM properties.

Book Effects of Surface Interactions and Mechanical Properties of Plastic Bonded Explosives on Explosive Sensitivity Part 2 Model Formulation

Download or read book Effects of Surface Interactions and Mechanical Properties of Plastic Bonded Explosives on Explosive Sensitivity Part 2 Model Formulation written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight major mixes were prepared from three baseline binders. The tensile and torsional shear mechanical properties and burning behavior of these model mixes have been investigated. The binder-filler bond energy determined from the surface studies can be correlated to the energy required for the onset of dewetting. The specific impulses of the model mixes were calculated. Some of the model mixes containing energetic binder were difficult to ignite at low energy flux. This suggests that the formulations may be candidates for insensitive energetic systems.

Book Fast Reactions in Energetic Materials

Download or read book Fast Reactions in Energetic Materials written by Alexander S. Shteinberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-26 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern energetic materials include explosives, blasting powders, pyrotechnic m- tures and rocket propellants [1, 2]. The study of high-temperature decomposition of condensed phases of propellants and their components (liquid, solid and hybrid) is currently of special importance for the development of space-system engineering [3, 4]. To better understand the burning mechanisms (stationary, nonstationary, - steady) of composite solid propellants and their components, information about the macrokinetics of their high-temperature decomposition is required [5]. To be able to evaluate the ignition parameters and conditions of safe handling of heat-affected explosives, one needs to know the kinetic constants of their high-temperature - composition. The development of new composite solid propellants characterized by high performance characteristics (high burning rates, high thermal stability, stability to intrachamber perturbations, and other aspects) is not possible without quanti- tive data on the high-temperature decomposition of composite solid propellants and their components [6]. The same reasons have resulted in signi?cant theoretical and practical interest in the high-temperature decomposition of components of hybrid propellants. It is known that hybrid propellants have not been used very widely due to the low bu- ing (pyrolysis) rates of the polymer blocks in the combustion chambers of hybrid rocket engines. To increase the burning rates it is necessary to obtain information about their relationships to the corresponding kinetic and thermophysical prop- ties of the fuels.

Book Advanced Energetic Materials

Download or read book Advanced Energetic Materials written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-01-30 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced energetic materialsâ€"explosive fill and propellantsâ€"are a critical technology for national security. While several new promising concepts and formulations have emerged in recent years, the Department of Defense is concerned about the nation's ability to maintain and improve the knowledge base in this area. To assist in addressing these concerns, two offices within DOD asked the NRC to investigate and assess the scope and health of the U.S. R&D efforts in energetic materials. This report provides that assessment. It presents several findings about the current R&D effort and recommendations aimed at improving U.S. capabilities in developing new energetic materials technology. This study reviewed U.S. research and development in advanced energetics being conducted by DoD, the DoE national laboratories, industries, and academia, from a list provided by the sponsors. It also: (a) reviewed papers and technology assessments of non-U.S. work in advanced energetics, assessed important parameters, such as validity, viability, and the likelihood that each of these materials can be produced in quantity; (b) identified barriers to scale-up and production, and suggested technical approaches for addressing potential problems; and (c) suggested specific opportunities, strategies, and priorities for government sponsorship of technologies and manufacturing process development.

Book Recent Approaches to the Synthesis of High Explosive and Energetic Materials A Review

Download or read book Recent Approaches to the Synthesis of High Explosive and Energetic Materials A Review written by Robert J. Spear and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The synthesis of energetic materials over the past 10-15 years has been revised. The areas in which most activity has occurred embrace six different classes of compounds: polynitroaliphatics, dinitrofluoromethyl compounds, difluoramines, azido compounds; polynitroaromatics, and heterocyclic compounds. Each class is treated within a single section covering the synthesis of the basic building-block materials, the strategies for transforming these into the final products and the scope and limitations of the reactions carried out. Most of the literature covered deals with new compounds but new or improved syntheses of compounds already known to possess useful properties are also described. Finally, developments in the prediction of explosive properties from molecular structure/composition are dealt with more briefly. (Author).
