Book Honor and Fidelity

Download or read book Honor and Fidelity written by Gilberto N. Villahermosa and published by U.S. Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formed at the turn of the nineteenth century to protect America's strategic interests in the Caribbean, the 65th Infantry consisted of Puerto Rican soldiers and sergeants and American and Puerto Rican officers. Although in existence for almost fifty years, the 65th had not experienced intense combat until Korea. Despite a lack of previous wartime experience, the regiment did extremely well from September 1950 to August 1951, establishing a solid reputation as a dependable infantry unit. The combat performance of the unit began to slip from the summer of 1951 to the autumn of 1952, when major failures occurred, first at Outpost Kelly in late September and then at Jackson Heights a month later. After the failures at Outpost Kelly and Jackson Heights, the Army recognized that these problems had to be decisively addressed or the regiment's combat effectiveness would be permanently degraded. The Army reconstituted the 65th as a fully integrated infantry regiment in the spring of 1953. By that June, the regiment had redeemed itself in the eyes of the Army's senior leadership. The unit's colors remained in Korea until November 1954, when they returned to Puerto Rico.

Book Korean Battle Chronology

Download or read book Korean Battle Chronology written by Richard E. Ecker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-07 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 28, 1950, five U.S. airmen died when their aircraft were shot down over Korea. They became the first U.S. casualties in a war that started three days earlier, when the North Korean People's Army crossed the 38th parallel and invaded the Republic of South Korea. The losses of U.S. military personnel that began with those five airmen would continue for 37 months and would ultimately total 33,985 American fatalities and more than 100,000 other American casualties. This is a history of U.S. involvement in the Korean War as told through those casualties--by the dates they occurred, their causes, their numbers and the units in which they served--and through all Medal of Honor citations (given in full). The work is subdivided into three units: The Peninsular War, Active Defense and The War of the Hills.

Book We Were Innocents

Download or read book We Were Innocents written by William D. Dannenmaier and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as the Forgotten War, the "police action" in Korea resulted in almost as many American combat deaths in three years as the Vietnam War did in ten. Yet for many Americans today, the Korean War brings to mind nothing more than the television series "M*A*S*H." William Dannenmaier served in Korea with the U.S. Army from December 1952 to January 1954, first as a radioman and then as a radio scout with the Fifteenth Infantry Regiment. Eager to serve a cause in which he fervently believed--the safeguarding of South Korea from advancing Chinese Communists--he enlisted in the army with an innocence that soon evaporated. His letters from the front, most of them to his sister, Ethel, provide a springboard for his candid and wry observations of the privations, the boredom, and the devastation of infantry life. At the same time these letters, designed to disguise the true danger of his tasks and his dehumanizing circumstances, reflect a growing failure to communicate with those outside the combat situation. Woven through the letters is Dannenmaier's narrative account of his combat experiences, including a vivid re-creation of the bloody battle for Outpost Harry, which he describes as "trivial and insignificant--except to the men who fought it."A high-intensity, eight-day battle for a hill American forces would abandon three months later with the signing of the truce, Outpost Harry was largely ignored by the press despite heavy casualties and many official citations for heroism. From his vantage point as an Everyman, Dannenmaier describes the frustration of men on the front lines who never saw their commanding superiors, the exhaustion of soldiers whose long-promised leaves never materialized, the transitory friendships and shared horrors that left indelible memories. Endangered by minefields and artillery fire, ground down by rumors and constant tension, these men returned--if they returned at all--profoundly and irrevocably changed. This intimate, revealing memoir, a rare account by a common soldier, is a tribute to the Americans who served in a conflict that has only recently begun to gain a place in official public memory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Not Forgotten War chronicles the experiences of Private Nicholas Dick, who served in a machine gun crew during the last few months of the Korean conflict. Those last months were among the bloodiest, as both sides fought to claim as much territory as possible prior to reaching a cease-fire agreement. For years after his discharge, Nick was never able to talk about his horrific experiences and never mentioned the frequent nightmares he suffered. After a job injury forced him to take early retirement, he suddenly found himself becoming a victim of post-traumatic stress syndrome. Here is one GI’s story of war and its aftermath.

Book Down on Main Street

Download or read book Down on Main Street written by Ed Mattson and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Presidential election of 2008, there has been a trend of liberal-progressive Americans to distance themselves from everything that has made America the most successful experiment in government the world has ever known, and in fact to even question what conservative Americans call "e;American Exceptionalism"e;. From President Obama himself, who spent the early months of his presidency touring the globe apologizing for nearly 3 centuries of America being the beacon of freedom, liberty, and free market capitalism that has enabled the United States to lead the world in economic development never before seen in history.Over the last five and a half years President Obama's promise to "e;fundamentally change America"e; has delivered an average loss of $5000 in family wealth and the highest misery index since the presidency of Jimmy Carter. It has also brought with it the largest number of Americans who are unable to find meaningful employment since the Great Depression; the highest number of Americans seeking government assistance; an astonishing federal debt of $18 trillion on the way to $26 trillion by 2022; a bloated and out-of-control federal bureaucracy; scandals in nearly every department of government; and a world on the brink of chaos caused by tyranny and terrorism. Down on Main Street Searching for American Exceptionalism documents the events and people who made America the exceptional country that it has been and questions why liberal progressives, most of whom live lifestyles far better than most people of the world, benefit financially beyond their skill-sets, and have access to food/luxury that is the envy of other countries, would want to tear down the very free market capitalistic system that has proven to be the only system that has ever lifted whole nations out of poverty, in favor of economic ideologies that have never been proven to work, insure only equal misery and mediocrity for its citizens, and can only be held together at the point of a gun.
