Book Enduring Alliance

    Book Details:
  • Author : Timothy Andrews Sayle
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press

Download or read book Enduring Alliance written by Timothy Andrews Sayle and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sayle's book is a remarkably well-documented history of the NATO alliance. This is a worthwhile addition to the growing literature on NATO and a foundation for understanding its current challenges and prospects.― Choice Born from necessity, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has always seemed on the verge of collapse. Even now, some seventy years after its inception, some consider its foundation uncertain and its structure weak. At this moment of incipient strategic crisis, Timothy A. Sayle offers a sweeping history of the most critical alliance in the post-World War II era. In Enduring Alliance, Sayle recounts how the western European powers, along with the United States and Canada, developed a treaty to prevent encroachments by the Soviet Union and to serve as a first defense in any future military conflict. As the growing and unruly hodgepodge of countries, councils, commands, and committees inflated NATO during the Cold War, Sayle shows that the work of executive leaders, high-level diplomats, and institutional functionaries within NATO kept the alliance alive and strong in the face of changing administrations, various crises, and the flux of geopolitical maneuverings. Resilience and flexibility have been the true hallmarks of NATO. As Enduring Alliance deftly shows, the history of NATO is organized around the balance of power, preponderant military forces, and plans for nuclear war. But it is also the history riven by generational change, the introduction of new approaches to conceiving international affairs, and the difficulty of diplomacy for democracies. As NATO celebrates its seventieth anniversary, the alliance once again faces challenges to its very existence even as it maintains its place firmly at the center of western hemisphere and global affairs.

Book GOD S ENDURING PROMISES FAITHFUL PROMISES FOR EVERYDAY LIVING

Download or read book GOD S ENDURING PROMISES FAITHFUL PROMISES FOR EVERYDAY LIVING written by S. King Livingston and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bible says that we should not “make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for ourselves.” God is a Jealous God and He delights in the praises and worship of His children. He promised that if we worship Him and Him only, that He will make us rejoice over our enemies; that your “light will break forth like the dawn and your healing will quickly appear. That your righteousness will go before you and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call and the Lord will answer; and you will cry for help and he will say: Here I am” Isaiah 58:8. When we talk about idols, we tend to think of graven images; but not so. An idol is anything that we place before God; it can be a spouse, a friend, money, power, drugs, sex or anything that interfere or takes time away from our worship with God. Whatever you find yourself spending time with more than your time of worship with God is your idol. We may not think of these things as idols, but consider the amount of time we spend stressing or concentrating our focus on the things of the world that ultimately will be the cause of our losing our way to salvation. Sometimes we forget to honor the Lord who makes all things available to us only because one of our personal idols require more of our time, so we place God aside and focus our attention on wandering further away from Him; not knowing that He grieves at our disobedience. But, it is not too late; the bible says that the arms of God are not short; His ears are not deafened to our cries. I know sometimes we may feel that God will not answer or forgive us because we keep going back to the very idol we confessed to have left, but God wants to forgive us; for that reason He sent His only son to die for our sins, so that the world through Him might be saved. God knows how weak and sinful we are. No matter how holy and righteous we may think we are, ultimately, we are powerless and wretched at best. Paul, in II Corinthians says this of the flesh: “I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Paul also says that he tried to do good deeds, but often ends up doing what he swore he would not do. We are just like Paul; we are weak and impressionable and prone to sin. That is why we need to have the Holy Spirit lead and guide our daily walk. We need to prostrate ourselves, lay our souls bare in front of He who pours out grace and forgiveness abundantly. In Christ, we are not of this world, but if we continue along the path of destruction, we will find ourselves standing outside the gates of heaven, asking “Lord where did I go wrong?” Genesis 28:12 “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Let us ask God now to forgive us our sins so that we can fully partake of His bountiful promises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protecting the Promise is the first book in the Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies Series edited by Django Paris. It features a collection of short stories told in collaboration with five Native families that speak to the everyday aspects of Indigenous educational resurgence rooted in the intergenerational learning that occurs between mothers and their children. The author defines “resurgence” as the ongoing actions that recenter Indigenous realities and knowledges, while simultaneously denouncing and healing from the damaging effects of settler colonial systems. By illuminating the potential of such educational resurgence, the book counters deficit paradigms too often placed on Indigenous communities. It also demonstrates the need to include Indigenous Knowledges within the curriculum for both in-school and out-of-school settings. These engaging narratives reframe Indigenous parents as critical and compassionate educators, cultural brokers, and storytellers who are central partners in the education of their children. Book Features: A window into how and why Indigenous resurgence through (and sometimes in resistance to) education can happen.A narrative style of writing that builds accessible stories that are both relatable and connected to larger social issues. An interdisciplinary approach that has implications for pre- and in-service teachers and school administrators, as well as for the communities from which these stories originated.A teacher-friendly Afterword that offers lesson ideas for the classroom and companion questions to the short stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the dramatic narratives that comprise The Republic of Nature, Mark Fiege reframes the canonical account of American history based on the simple but radical premise that nothing in the nation's past can be considered apart from the natural circumstances in which it occurred. Revisiting historical icons so familiar that schoolchildren learn to take them for granted, he makes surprising connections that enable readers to see old stories in a new light. Among the historical moments revisited here, a revolutionary nation arises from its environment and struggles to reconcile the diversity of its people with the claim that nature is the source of liberty. Abraham Lincoln, an unlettered citizen from the countryside, steers the Union through a moment of extreme peril, guided by his clear-eyed vision of nature's capacity for improvement. In Topeka, Kansas, transformations of land and life prompt a lawsuit that culminates in the momentous civil rights case of Brown v. Board of Education. By focusing on materials and processes intrinsic to all things and by highlighting the nature of the United States, Fiege recovers the forgotten and overlooked ground on which so much history has unfolded. In these pages, the nation's birth and development, pain and sorrow, ideals and enduring promise come to life as never before, making a once-familiar past seem new. The Republic of Nature points to a startlingly different version of history that calls on readers to reconnect with fundamental forces that shaped the American experience. Book excerpt: Honorable Mention, 2020 Barnard Hewitt Award for Outstanding Research in Theatre History, given by the American Society for Theatre Research Argues that Ricanness operates as a continual performance of bodily endurance against US colonialism In 1954, Dolores “Lolita” Lebrón and other members of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party led a revolutionary action on the chambers of Congress, firing several shots at the ceiling and calling for the independence of the island. Ricanness: Enduring Time in Anticolonial Performance begins with Lebrón’s vanguard act, distilling the relationship between Puerto Rican subjectivity, gender, sexuality, and revolutionary performance under colonial time. Ruiz argues that Ricanness—a continual performance of bodily endurance against US colonialism through different measures of time—uncovers what’s at stake politically for the often unwanted, anticolonial, racialized and sexualized enduring body. Moving among theatre, experimental video, revolutionary protest, photography, poetry, and durational performance art, Ricanness stages scenes in which the philosophical, social, and psychic come together at the site of aesthetics, against the colonization of time. Analyzing the work of artists and revolutionaries like ADÁL, Lebrón, Papo Colo, Pedro Pietri, and Ryan Rivera, Ricanness imagines a Rican future through the time travel extended in their aesthetic interventions, illustrating how they have reformulated time itself through nonlinear aesthetic practices.

Book The Secrets of Enduring Love

Download or read book The Secrets of Enduring Love written by Meg John Barker and published by Random House. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Secrets of Enduring Love focuses on what couples actually do to maintain, nurture and nourish their relationships. The reader will be taken on a journey through different ways of doing relationships, focusing on the key themes which came out of the research: everyday acts of kindness and appreciation; the importance of home; communication and conflict management; sex and intimacy; incorporating others into the relationship (children, pets, friends, hobbies); and telling your own love story. One of the key messages from the research is that different things work for different people, and at different times in the relationship. For this reason the book focuses on the differnt practices that we might bring into our own relationships, helping us to recognise the small things which we may be already doing but which ordinarily go by unnoticed, and offering a helping hand to find out what works best for us.
