Book Enduring Alliance

    Book Details:
  • Author : Timothy Andrews Sayle
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2019-04-15
  • ISBN : 1501735527
  • Pages : 462 pages

Download or read book Enduring Alliance written by Timothy Andrews Sayle and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sayle's book is a remarkably well-documented history of the NATO alliance. This is a worthwhile addition to the growing literature on NATO and a foundation for understanding its current challenges and prospects.― Choice Born from necessity, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has always seemed on the verge of collapse. Even now, some seventy years after its inception, some consider its foundation uncertain and its structure weak. At this moment of incipient strategic crisis, Timothy A. Sayle offers a sweeping history of the most critical alliance in the post-World War II era. In Enduring Alliance, Sayle recounts how the western European powers, along with the United States and Canada, developed a treaty to prevent encroachments by the Soviet Union and to serve as a first defense in any future military conflict. As the growing and unruly hodgepodge of countries, councils, commands, and committees inflated NATO during the Cold War, Sayle shows that the work of executive leaders, high-level diplomats, and institutional functionaries within NATO kept the alliance alive and strong in the face of changing administrations, various crises, and the flux of geopolitical maneuverings. Resilience and flexibility have been the true hallmarks of NATO. As Enduring Alliance deftly shows, the history of NATO is organized around the balance of power, preponderant military forces, and plans for nuclear war. But it is also the history riven by generational change, the introduction of new approaches to conceiving international affairs, and the difficulty of diplomacy for democracies. As NATO celebrates its seventieth anniversary, the alliance once again faces challenges to its very existence even as it maintains its place firmly at the center of western hemisphere and global affairs.

Book What wants to be is in the process of becoming

Download or read book What wants to be is in the process of becoming written by Michael Worsch and published by novum pro Verlag. This book was released on 2023-08-25 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What wants to be is in the process of becoming - this basic assumption reminds us that self-development cannot be forced. It should also inspire people to take the path into the open, to trust their longing for the whole and to look at the dark sides of the soul in the light of the sun. This self-experience is a journey to the heart - and from there into the open. Only when man follows the longing, he can unfold as it corresponds to his own destiny. In essay form, Michael Worsch illuminates the round horizon of his practical experiences as a psychotherapist and theater director with a view to symbolization processes.

Book External Interventions in Civil Wars

Download or read book External Interventions in Civil Wars written by Stefan Wolff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together expert case studies on a range of experiences of third-party interventions in civil wars. The chapters consider the role of a variety of organisations, including the United Nations, NATO, the European Union, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, the African Union, and the Organization of American States. Each case study features a presentation and analysis of empirical data in two dimensions: the organisation’s general capabilities to carry out intervention in civil wars and, specific to one particular intervention, the conflict context in which it happened. This serves two purposes. First, to offer insights into the dynamics of each individual case and helping us understand the specific outcome of an intervention effort, i.e., why did a mission (partially) succeed or fail. Second, it enables us to make real comparisons between the cases and draw policy-relevant conclusions about the conditions under which military, civilian and hybrid intervention missions are likely to succeed. This book was originally published as a special issue of Civil Wars.

Book The frontispiece is located opposite the title page on p 3 to illustrate a 82 510 word unformatted and uncorrected proof titled Countess Caroline Esterhazy printed 265 pages after p 2 the location of the frontispiece

Download or read book The frontispiece is located opposite the title page on p 3 to illustrate a 82 510 word unformatted and uncorrected proof titled Countess Caroline Esterhazy printed 265 pages after p 2 the location of the frontispiece written by Todd Van Buskirk and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-05-13 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Words take on their meaning from their positioning in a network of a sentence, a sentence that's nestled in the network of a paragraph, a paragraph that's nestled in the network of a complete document, a complete document that's nestled in the network of a culture, and a culture that's nestled in an Era of history, a culture that's networked into a historical period in whose context the words make sense. Is there a specific reason the author places the proof 265 pages after page 2? And why the importance of the frontispiece? The title on the cover states that the proof is titled "Countess Caroline Esterhazy" and that the text is "unformatted and uncorrected," but 265 pages after page 2 there is no sign of the title of the proof. The title of the proof, therefore, only exists within the title of the novel. The frontispiece appears to exist to reveal the distance and location of the proof.

Book Strategic Partners

Download or read book Strategic Partners written by Jeanne Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia's foreign policy experience in the first post-Soviet decade was marked by disappointments as well as surprising turns. Expectations that Russia would join the Western powers as an equal partner were frustrated, while relations with the People's Republic of China warmed considerably. Today, Russia's relationship with China is an important component of its overall foreign policy orientation, as the two states - one greatly diminished, the other clearly on the rise - have found themselves sharing an interest in curbing the power of the United States. In analyzing Russia's evolving foreign policy vis-a-vis China, the author takes into account the legacy of Soviet-era precedents; the simultaneous processes of economic policy change and integration into global economic structures; and military relations. By shedding light on the role of political realism, decision makers, and exogenous factors in Russian foreign policy, this analysis of an important bilateral relationship contributes to the larger project of understanding international relations and the dynamics of domestic and foreign policy change.

Book Chinese Strategy and Military Modernization in 2015

Download or read book Chinese Strategy and Military Modernization in 2015 written by Anthony H. Cordesman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s emergence as a global economic superpower, and as a major regional military power in Asia and the Pacific, has had a major impact on its relations with the United States and its neighbors. China was the driving factor in the new strategy the United States announced in 2012 that called for a “rebalance” of U.S. forces to the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, China’s actions on its borders, in the East China Sea, and in the South China Sea have shown that it is steadily expanding its geopolitical role in the Pacific and having a steadily increasing impact on the strategy and military developments in other Asian powers.
