Book Endocrine Oncology Clinical Cases in Endocrinology

Download or read book Endocrine Oncology Clinical Cases in Endocrinology written by Elaina Lloyd and published by . This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The endocrine system consists of various glands in the body that produce hormones, including the thyroid, adrenal glands, pancreas, and pituitary gland. The field of oncology that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of cancers related to the endocrine system is known as endocrine oncology. Cancers that develop in these glands or involve the production of hormones are referred to as endocrine tumors or endocrine neoplasms. Some of the major types of endocrine tumors are thyroid cancer, adrenal cancer and pituitary tumors. Thyroid cancer originates in the cells of the thyroid gland and can include types such as papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic thyroid cancer. Adrenal cancer develops in the adrenal glands, which produce hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. This book brings forth some of the most innovative concepts and elucidates the unexplored aspects of endocrine oncology. It will serve as a reference to a broad spectrum of readers.

The book's many prominent contributors also illuminate significant recent advances in the biochemistry and physiology of hormone receptors and review the state-of -the-art in the endocrine therapy of breast cancer. Endocrinology of Breast Cancer provides a unique integrated overview of the most significant basic and clinical developments concerning the hormonal aspects of breast cancer.

Book Endocrine Therapies in Breast and Prostate Cancer

Download or read book Endocrine Therapies in Breast and Prostate Cancer written by C. Kent Osborne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been recognized for many years that cancers originating in the breast and prostate gland are frequently 'endocrine-dependent. ' Traditional thera pies included surgical endocrine ablative procedures or pharmacologic hor mone administration, both designed to antagonize the stimulatory effects of sex steroid hormones. In the past decade, several new treatment strategies for these tumors have emerged from basic studies in reproductive biology and mechanisms of action of steroid hormones. In some instances, these new treatments have elimin ated or reduced the need for major surgical ablative procedures or for toxic hormone therapy. The clinical role for other new treatments has not yet been clearly defined, although exciting preliminary data from recent clinical trials are now available. Thus, an objective review of the current status of these new therapeutic approaches is of interest. In this volume we have attempted to provide an in-depth review of both basic and clinical research involving several new treatment strategies for breast and prostate cancer. The first three chapters summarize preclinical and clinical studies of the luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogues, which can be used effectively to induce 'medical castration. ' Chapters 4, 5, and 6 review the rationale and clinical use of the compounds known collec tively as the aromatase inhibitors, which can also be used to suppress sex steroid hormone levels. Antiestrogen mechanism of action and its clinical implications for the design of innovative treatment approaches is considered in chapters 7 and 8.

Book Endocrine Treatment of Breast Cancer

Download or read book Endocrine Treatment of Breast Cancer written by B. Henningsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in basic research has made it necessary to redetermine the possibility of classic endocrine therapy for the treatment of patients with breast cancer. Exemplary, close cooperation between biochemis try and animal and clinical research led to a truly interdisciplinary and international exchange of ideas and experience at a symposium held in autumn 1978 in Heidelberg. We owe our thanks to ICI-Pharma for the kind support of this sym posIUm. The participation of Charles Huggins in the meeting as honorary chairman signified to all participants the meaning of this joint endeavour. It was the same Charles Huggins who through experimental work laid the foundation stone for endocrine ther apy of prostate and breast cancer, and who applied his findings clinically. Thousands of patients owe to him relief from their suffering. He contributed greatly to the attempt to find and stabilize the endocrine therapy for breast cancer, for which we thank him sincerely. We hope that the following contributions will similarly serve the well-being of our patients.

Book Endocrine Tumor Syndromes and Their Genetics

Download or read book Endocrine Tumor Syndromes and Their Genetics written by Constantine A. Stratakis and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From classic MEN syndromes to various germline and somatic mutations in sporadic tumors In these times, a book should aspire to present the most significant advances in the field, reflect the themes of the moment, and provide a useful compendium for future reference. This book accomplishes all three objectives by discussing the changing world of modern genetics in endocrine tumors and its impact on clinical practice. Clinicians have to incorporate modern genetics and systems biology in their daily practice. Educators and researchers have to introduce molecular pathways and their genetic variability in their teaching, as well as understanding of classic physiology and pathophysiology. Taking these aspects into account, the chapters in this book cover both the classic multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndromes, as well as newly described ones, such as Carney triad and Carney- Stratakis syndrome. Furthermore, the genetics of paragangliomas as well as thyroid, parathyroid, and pituitary tumors are examined. Outlining the latest research and its obvious implications for our understanding the genetics of endocrine tumor formation and molecular biology of cancer and their potential therapeutic implications, this book is not only useful for researchers but even more so for practicing clinicians, in particular internists, endocrinologists, oncologists, pediatricians, surgeons, pathologists, geneticists, and genetic counselors.
