Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hormone secretion from endocrine glands constitutes a primary component of homeostatic control systems that defend whole body tissue viability and function. Endocrine organ secretion is controlled by efferent mechanisms that consist of both hormonal and neural elements. Anatomical evidence for dual control has led to increased understanding of how autonomic neural activity modulates functional sensitivity to hormonal input. The clinical relevance of autonomic–endocrine interactions is illustrated by examining functional control of the adrenal cortex and the ovary, two tissues that require tropic support from the anterior pituitary and receive sympathetic neural input. Extrapituitary mechanisms of adrenal cortical control including sympathetic neural activity have been implicated in controlling the amplitude of the cortisol awakening response (CAR), a diagnostic index of hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal activity in humans. In addition, increases in sympathetic neural tone have been implicated in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a leading cause of female infertility. These examples offer strong evidence for the capability of autonomic neural activity to alter the functional sensitivity of endocrine glands. This interaction has significant clinical relevance and needs to be incorporated into our view in assessing endocrine organ function and dysfunction.

Book Introduction to Psychology

Download or read book Introduction to Psychology written by Jennifer Walinga and published by Hasanraza Ansari. This book was released on with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to help students organize their thinking about psychology at a conceptual level. The focus on behaviour and empiricism has produced a text that is better organized, has fewer chapters, and is somewhat shorter than many of the leading books. The beginning of each section includes learning objectives; throughout the body of each section are key terms in bold followed by their definitions in italics; key takeaways, and exercises and critical thinking activities end each section.

Book Autonomic Endocrine Interactions

Download or read book Autonomic Endocrine Interactions written by Unsicker and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-01-23 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first comprehensive account of the structure, physiology and chemistry of autonomic neuroendocrine interactions. It introduces the evolution of the neuronal and endocrine systems and makes a detailed study of the receptors involved in signal transduction. It goes on to detail the autonomic innervation of each of the endocrine glands. It then switches viewpoint and examines the effects of the endocrine system on the autonomic nervous system, through the action of various hormones.

Book The Endocrine System Third Edition

Download or read book The Endocrine System Third Edition written by Salvatore Blair and published by Infobase Holdings, Inc. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much like the nervous system, the endocrine system relays important communication signals throughout the body. The endocrine system uses chemical signals known as hormones, which are produced and stored in special glands in the body. Different glands produce specialized hormones and release them into the bloodstream. From there, these hormones can travel directly to the tissues and organs and help regulate bodily functions. In The Endocrine System, Third Edition, learn how this chemical messaging system is vital to the body’s growth, metabolism, and sexual development. Packed with full-color photographs and illustrations, this absorbing book provides students with sufficient background information through references, websites, and a bibliography.

Book The Sympathetic Nervous Sytem in Disease Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sympathetic Nervous Sytem in Disease Classic Reprint written by Walter Langdon-Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sympathetic Nervous Sytem in Disease This book is based upon the Croonian Lectures delivered before the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1918. The kindly interest displayed in different quarters in those lectures emboldens me to hope that in this expanded and rearranged form they may prove of service. I have not attempted to give a detailed account of the anatomy of the autonomic or vegetative nervous system. Several excellent accounts are already in existence, but the mass of detail necessarily involved tends to give the general practitioner an exaggerated idea of its complexity. I have aimed rather to emphasize the main plan of the autonomic nervous system. This is simple, and its comprehension aids in the elucidation of many clinical problems. Nor have I attempted to describe in detail the reaction of the autonomic system to disease. Rather, I have chosen to illustrate its relations to a few large groups of disease - such as affections of the endocrine glands, of the digestive and circulatory systems, and glycosuria. The close interaction of the endocrine glands with the sympathetic nervous system on the one hand, and with the reproductive organs on the other, is a fact of paramount importance in the understanding of the emotional response of the sympathetic nervous system, and of the influence of emotion on structure.
