Book excerpt: Many successful parents have spent their lives creating a financial bonanza for themselves, as well as their children and grandchildren. What they didn’t plan for are the unintended consequences that increased wealth brings. These include issues like entitlement and loss of work ethic among the rising generation, and increased potential for upsets, disputes, and strained relationships that can often progress to separation and even lawsuits. Richard M. Del Monte, CFP®, CWC, wealth consultant and author of ENDLESS INHERITANCE: Moving from Feuding to Flourishing in Your Affluent Family aims to help affluent families prepare for and prevent the destructive forces that wealth brings, and help them resolve all their conflicts, prepare the heirs to handle the wealth they will inherit, and create a scenario in which money becomes a tool to unleash and achieve the family’s greatest potential, now and in future generations. Seventy percent of affluent families fail at passing on wealth through the second generation, meaning the kids either squander all the money or wind up fighting with or suing each other. Written as a guide, ENDLESS INHERITANCE: Moving from Feuding to Flourishing in Your Affluent Family, outlines how to prepare the rising generation of a wealthy family—not just to inherit worldly goods, but to be engaged and contributing members of the family, to appreciate their shared history, resolve conflicts quickly before they escalate, and to be able to handle the responsibilities and opportunities that come with wealth. As a wealth consultant, asset manager, and trained specialist in family dynamics, Richard M. Del Monte outlines a plan of action supported by resources and exercises to empower parents and children alike to start the often difficult conversations needed to overcome poor relationships, lack of trust, and entitlement. The book addresses financial planning aspects wealthy families should consider, as well as the family’s interpersonal relationships and training that need to be addressed to ensure their wealth and family harmony last for generations.

Book Inheritance in Psychoanalysis

Download or read book Inheritance in Psychoanalysis written by Joel Goldbach and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthology of recent, cutting-edge work in psychoanalysis and philosophy on the concept of inheritance. In contrast to the way inheritance is understood in scientific discourse and culture more broadly, inheritance in psychoanalysis is a paradox. Although it’s impossible, strictly speaking, for the unconscious to be inherited, this volume demonstrates how the concept of inheritance can occasion a rich reassessment and reinvention of psychoanalytic theory and practice. The collection enacts a critical traversal of inheritance for psychoanalysis: from the most basic assumptions of natural or biological inheritance, such as innateness, heredity, evolution, and ontogenesis, to analysis of the ways cultural traditions can be challenged and transformed, and finally to the reinvention of psychoanalytic practice, in which the ethics of inheritance is fully realized as the individual’s responsibility to transform the social bond. Featuring strong interdisciplinary analysis rooted in both psychoanalysis and philosophy, this volume further engages science, politics, and cultural studies, and addresses contemporary political challenges such as autism and transgenderism.

Book Work Inheritance and Deserts in Joseph Conrad s Fiction

Download or read book Work Inheritance and Deserts in Joseph Conrad s Fiction written by Evelyn Tsz Yan Chan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-19 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the complex relationships between inheritance, work, and desert in literature. It shows how, from its manifestation in the trope of material inheritance and legacy in Victorian fiction, “inheritance” gradually took on additional, more modern meanings in Joseph Conrad’s fiction on work and self-making. In effect, the emphasis on inheritance as referring to social rank and wealth acquired through birth shifted to a focus on talent, ability, and merit, often expressed through work. The book explores how Conrad’s fiction engaged with these changing modes of inheritance and work, and the resulting claims of desert they led to. Uniquely, it argues that Conrad’s fiction critiques claims of desert arising from both work and inheritance, while also vividly portraying the emotional costs and existential angst that these beliefs in desert entailed. The argument speaks to and illuminates today’s debates on moral desert arising from work and inheritance, in particular from meritocratic ideals. Its new approach to Conrad’s works will appeal to students and scholars of Conrad and literary modernism, as well as a wider audience interested in philosophical and social debates on desert deriving from inheritance and work.

Book Inheritance in Nineteenth century French Culture

Download or read book Inheritance in Nineteenth century French Culture written by AndrewJ. Counter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transmission of wealth between generations was not only a narrative commonplace in nineteenth-century France, but also a topic of considerable cultural anxiety and intense political debate. In this study, Andrew J. Counter draws on a wealth of previously unexplored material to show how the theme of inheritance in literature and beyond acquired ethical, historical and ideological connotations, and was vital to nineteenth-century French conceptions of the family and of the legacy of the Revolution. Weaving together fiction, drama, legal texts, historiographical thought and political writing, Inheritance in Nineteenth-Century French Culture teases out a complex leitmotiv that gives us a new understanding of nineteenth- century Frances sense of its own place in history. It also proposes innovative readings of writers as familiar as Honore de Balzac, George Sand, Guy de Maupassant and Emile Zola, while drawing attention to a range of neglected authors and works.

Book Gospel Community

  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book Gospel Community written by Neal Ledbetter and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you long for genuine relationships where you can know others and be known by them? Do you desire more than just gathering in the same space with others without any real connection? Yet, simultaneously, do you find yourself occasionally pushing back when someone gets too close? Why do you think you have that longing, and why do you think deep-abiding relationships are such a struggle to find and maintain? In this book, Pastor Neal Ledbetter makes the case that the gospel of Jesus Christ gives us answers. In the gospel, we are offered the endless treasure of Jesus and the never-ending, overflowing supply of treasures found in him. One of the rare jewels that comes with a new identity in Christ is a new gospel community, kingdom-family, and people to which we belong and in which we can know and be known. Paul calls it our inheritance in the saints (Eph 1:18), our citizenship with the saints, and our membership among the household of God (Eph 2:19–22). This new gospel community and kingdom-family is simply too important and too wonderful a treasure to ignore, avoid, or treat as unnecessary, unimportant, or secondary to our lives. This study will explore the extraordinary gift we have been given in gospel community. We’ll see how the gospel transforms us individually and simultaneously forms us into a new people. We’ll survey how we are intended to live together and the only sustaining motive and power for doing so. And finally, we’ll examine several characteristics necessary to experience the rare jewel of gospel community.

Book Dreams from My Father

Download or read book Dreams from My Father written by Barack Obama and published by Crown. This book was released on 2007-01-09 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • ONE OF ESSENCE’S 50 MOST IMPACTFUL BLACK BOOKS OF THE PAST 50 YEARS In this iconic memoir of his early days, Barack Obama “guides us straight to the intersection of the most serious questions of identity, class, and race” (The Washington Post Book World). “Quite extraordinary.”—Toni Morrison In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father—a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man—has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey—first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother’s family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family, confronts the bitter truth of his father’s life, and at last reconciles his divided inheritance. Praise for Dreams from My Father “Beautifully crafted . . . moving and candid . . . This book belongs on the shelf beside works like James McBride’s The Color of Water and Gregory Howard Williams’s Life on the Color Line as a tale of living astride America’s racial categories.”—Scott Turow “Provocative . . . Persuasively describes the phenomenon of belonging to two different worlds, and thus belonging to neither.”—The New York Times Book Review “Obama’s writing is incisive yet forgiving. This is a book worth savoring.”—Alex Kotlowitz, author of There Are No Children Here “One of the most powerful books of self-discovery I’ve ever read, all the more so for its illuminating insights into the problems not only of race, class, and color, but of culture and ethnicity. It is also beautifully written, skillfully layered, and paced like a good novel.”—Charlayne Hunter-Gault, author of In My Place “Dreams from My Father is an exquisite, sensitive study of this wonderful young author’s journey into adulthood, his search for community and his place in it, his quest for an understanding of his roots, and his discovery of the poetry of human life. Perceptive and wise, this book will tell you something about yourself whether you are black or white.”—Marian Wright Edelman
