Book excerpt: An eye-opening, funny, painful, and always truthful in-depth examination of modern relationships, and a wake-up call for single women about getting real about Mr. Right, from the New York Times bestselling author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone. You have a fulfilling job, great friends, and the perfect apartment. So what if you haven’t found “The One” just yet. He’ll come along someday, right? But what if he doesn’t? Or what if Mr. Right had been, well, Mr. Right in Front of You—but you passed him by? Nearing forty and still single, journalist Lori Gottlieb started to wonder: What makes for lasting romantic fulfillment, and are we looking for those qualities when we’re dating? Are we too picky about trivial things that don’t matter, and not picky enough about the often overlooked things that do? In Marry Him, Gottlieb explores an all-too-common dilemma—how to reconcile the desire for a happy marriage with a list of must-haves and deal-breakers so long and complicated that many great guys get misguidedly eliminated. On a quest to find the answer, Gottlieb sets out on her own journey in search of love, discovering wisdom and surprising insights from sociologists and neurobiologists, marital researchers and behavioral economists—as well as single and married men and women of all generations.

Book The Cultural Politics of Chick Lit

Download or read book The Cultural Politics of Chick Lit written by Heike Missler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chick lit is the marketing label attributed to a surge of books published in the wake of Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary (1996) and Candace Bushnell's Sex and the City (1997). Branded by their pink or pastel-coloured book covers, chick-lit novels have been a highly successful and ubiquitous product of women's popular culture since the late 1990s. This study traces the evolution of chick lit not only as a genre of popular fiction, but as a cultural phenomenon. It complicates the genealogy of the texts by situating them firmly in the context of age-old debates about female literary creation, and by highlighting the dynamics of the popular-fiction market. Offering a convincing dissection of the formula which lies at the heart of chick lit, as well as in-depth analyses of a number of chick-lit titles ranging from classic to more recent and edgier texts, this book yields new insights into a relatively young field of academic study. Its close readings provide astute assessments of chick lit's notoriously skewed representational politics, especially with regard to sexuality and ethnicity, which feed into current discussions about postfeminism. Moreover, the study makes a unique contribution to the scholarly debate of chick lit by including an analysis of the (online) fan communities the genre has fostered. The Cultural Politics of Chick Lit weaves a sound methodological network, drawing on reader-response criticism; feminist, gender, and queer theory; affect studies; and whiteness studies. This book is an accessible and engaging study for anyone interested in postfeminism and popular culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the same saucy, tell-it-like-it-is appeal of He's Just Not That Into You, sex author Kate Taylor explains reasons to keep your clothes on in laugh-out-loud detail: how Oxytocin -- the Fatal Attraction hormone -- can make women up to ten times more emotionally attached after sex than men; why men never expect to get lucky on the third date, or any date; that relationships are more fun, easier and longer-lasting when you keep your feet on the ground instead of hooking them round his neck. An absolutely unique plan for making sure Mr. Right is more than Mr. Right Now: The Rules for how, why, and when not to have sex, this completely original take on an age-old concept offers: an Extreme Dating Makeover, a Q&A for skeptics, tactical plans, "questions to say yes to before you say yes to him," what to do on those third, fourth, tenth -- dates when nookie isn't in the plan, and "I told you so" success stories, ultimately helping you to figure out the perfect time to have sex.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should women be priests? Should women submit to their husbands? Is premarital sex okay? Inflammatory questions such as these have splintered Christianity and polarized the church. In Sex, Gender, and Christianity, a cadre of seasoned college professors offers the modest proposal that honest, fruitful conversations about these questions will take place only if we develop the ability to deal with sex, gender, and the Christian faith with the academic rigor and perspectives of our various disciplines. This volume contributes an unprecedented collection of first-rate articles from a variety of disciplines--from the social sciences to history, from literary criticism to theology--that will challenge college administrators, professors, and students to address fractious questions in an atmosphere of scholarly inquiry. Contributors: David G. Allen, Karen Trimble Alliaume, Brian Bantum, Mikee C. Delony, James G. Dixon III, Antonios Finitsis Theresa J. FitzPatrick, Allyson Jule, Patricia O'Connell Killen, Caryn D.
