Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encyclopedia of Sacred Theology: Its Principles is the second in a three-volume series. Written by Abraham Kuyper and translated into English by Reverend J. Hendrick Devries, it is a massive book about the history of theology and its place amongst the sciences. This volume does not contain the typical contents of an encyclopedia. Instead of a series of short entries on a variety of topics, Kuyper's book reads much more like a history text. The book is divided into three parts, each of which consists of multiple chapters. The first part is a discussion of the very name of the Theological Encyclopedia, and whether this is an appropriate naming convention to follow. The second part examines the organism of science, and theology's place within the accepted scientific disciplines. The third and final part is a detailed discussion of theology itself, with chapters on the conception, methods and history of the discipline, and more. The book concludes with a brief index of the topics discussed and the proper names referred to. Kuyper's work is extensive and challenging. The book presents an extremely detailed and nuanced discussion of the nature of theology. At more than 700 pages, it is no short work, particularly when one considers that it is only one volume in a three-volume set. Kuyper's Encyclopedia of Sacred Theology: Its Principles is an advanced work about the study of theology. It is not a 'light' read, but one that contains an enormous amount of information. For those serious about the study of theology, Kuyper's work cannot be missed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Sacred Modes of Being in a Postsecular World written by Andrew W. Hass and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-16 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we talk meaningfully about the sacred in contexts where conventional religious expression has so often lost its power? Inspired by the influential work of David Jasper, this important volume builds on his thinking to identify sacrality in a world where the old religious and secular debates have exhausted themselves and theology struggles for a new language in their wake. Distinguished writers explore here the idea of the sacred as one that exists, paradoxically, in a space that is both possible and impossible: profoundly theological on the one hand, but also deeply this-worldly and irreligious on the other. This is a sacredness that is simultaneously 'present' and 'absent': one which encompasses – as Jasper himself characterises it – 'the impossible possibility of an absolute vision'. The book teaches us that the sacred assumes a renewed potency when fully engaged with the creativity that happens across religion, literature, philosophy and the arts.
Download or read book Orthodox yet Modern written by Cory C. Brock and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2020-07-22 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herman Bavinck showed that othodox theology continues to speak authoritatively today. Since the English translation from Dutch of Herman Bavinck's magisterial 4-volume Reformed Dogmatics, there has been a blossoming interest in Bavinck's theology. Readers have been drawn to Bavinck for his faithfulness to the Reformed tradition while also engaging the questions of 19th-century Europe. Far from simply revisiting the older dogmatic systems, Bavinck faithfully engages modern trends like historical-criticism, the epistemological problems raised by Kant, the rationalism of the philosophes, and the radical changes ushered in through the French and European revolutions. The question then is, was Bavinck orthodox, modern, or both? In Orthodox yet Modern, Cory C. Brock argues that Bavinck acts as a bridge between orthodox and modern views, insofar as he subsumes the philosophical-theological questions and concepts of theological modernity under the conditions of his orthodox, confessional tradition. By exploring the relation between Bavinck and Schleiermacher, Orthodox yet Modern presents Herman Bavinck as a theologian eager to engage the contemporary world, rooted in the catholic and Reformed tradition, absorbing the best of modernity while rejecting its excesses. Bavinck represents a theologian who is at once orthodox, yet modern.

Download or read book The Teachings of Modern Protestantism on Law Politics and Human Nature written by John Witte (Jr.) and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Teachings of Modern Protestantism on Law, Politics, and Human Nature examines how modern Protestant thinkers have answered the most pressing political, legal, and ethical questions of our time. It discusses the enduring teachings of important Protestant intellectuals of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Leading contemporary scholars analyze these thinkers' views on the nature and purpose of law and authority, the limits of rule and obedience, the care of the needy and innocent, the ethics of war and violence, and the separation of church and state, among other themes. A diverse and powerful portrait of Protestant legal and political thought, this volume underscores the various ways Protestant intellectuals have shaped modern debates over the family, the state, religion, and society. The book focuses on the work of Abraham Kuyper (1827-1920); Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906); Karl Barth (1886-1968); Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945); Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971); Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968); William Stringfellow (1928-1985); and John Howard Yoder (1927-1997).

This book was released on 2022-03-11 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Journal of Biblical and Theological Studies (JBTS) is an academic journal focused on the fields of Bible and Theology from an inter-denominational point of view. The journal is comprised of an editorial board of scholars that represent several academic institutions throughout the world. JBTS is concerned with presenting high-level original scholarship in an approachable way. Academic journals are often written by scholars for other scholars. They are technical in nature, assuming a robust knowledge of the field. There are fewer journals that seek to introduce biblical and theological scholarship that is also accessible to students. JBTS seeks to provide high-level scholarship and research to both scholars and students, which results in original scholarship that is readable and accessible. As an inter-denominational journal JBTS is broadly evangelical. We accept contributions in all theological disciplines from any evangelical perspective. In particular, we encourage articles and book reviews within the fields of Old Testament, New Testament, Biblical Theology, Church History, Systematic Theology, Practical Theology, Philosophical Theology, Philosophy, and Ethics.
