Book Encyclopaedia of Worship in All Religions

Download or read book Encyclopaedia of Worship in All Religions written by Dobbins and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 2600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete Graphic and Comparative History Of the Beliefs, Superstitious Practices, Domestic Rituals and Traditions, Sacred Writings, Systems of Philosophy, Legends and Traditions, Customs and Habits of Mankind Throughout the World. Ancient & Modern. The story of the world's worship is a story of absorbing interest. The odd and the curious, the enchanting and the revolting are each factors of heathen devotion. The subject is indeed intensely interesting. Every Nation has its God, or gods, and its corresponding forms of worship. Nothing lies so close to the heart of mankind as its religious faith. Religion in some form is interwoven with the entire fabric of human history. It concerns man's dearest pleasures, his fondest hopes, and his highest aspirations. Man must worship. It is part of his nature to worship. Hence, from the American Indians, and Europeans, to the undiscovered Chinese, and even down to the degraded Hottentot; in all stages of man; existence, among all races and classes, some form of worship is found. Nothing surely can interest us more than the story of that faith in which our fellow-creatures have lived and died.It is because the author believes that the subject of gods and their worship is so interesting, and because he hopes to furnish some much-needed information on this topic, that he has undertaken the present work. There is no one book that covers this ground. There are many volumes covering various phases of the religious systems of heathendom, but there is not one that deals comprehensively with all religions, extinct or existing, except indeed it be those suited only to students and to learned men. The aim in this volume is to present the subject in a style, suited to the average reader as well as the scholar. The very best works of the most thorough students of the non-Christian religious systems have been consulted, and the author has freely availed himself of the results of their labors. It has been the purpose of the author and the publishers to place the subject-matter of this volume within the ready reach of all who consult it.

Book Religion and Politics in America 2 volumes

Download or read book Religion and Politics in America 2 volumes written by Frank J. Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 997 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has always been an intricate relationship between religion and politics. This encyclopedia provides a comprehensive overview of the interrelation of religion and politics from colonial days to the present. Can a judge display the Ten Commandments outside of the courthouse? Can a town set up a nativity scene on the village green during Christmas? Should U.S. currency bear the "In God We Trust" motto? Should public school students be allowed to form bible study groups? Controversies about the separation of church and state, the proper use of religious imagery in public space, and the role of religious beliefs in public education are constantly debated. This work offers insights into contemporary controversies regarding the uneasy intersections of religion and politics in America. Organized alphabetically, the entries place each topic in its proper historical context to help readers fully grasp how religious beliefs have always existed side by side—and often clashed with—political ideals in the United States from the time of the colonies. The information is presented in an unbiased manner that favors no particular religious background or political inclination. This work shows that politics and religion have always had an impact on one another and have done so in many ways that will likely surprise modern students.

Download or read book Encyclopaedia of Religion and Religions written by E. Royston Pike and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-30 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1951 Encyclopaedia of Religion and Religions is the book where in one volume may be found information- clearly written, unbiased, and accurate- on the Founders and great personalities, the theological tenets and philosophical ideas, the rites, ceremonies and practices, the scriptures and creeds, the Churches, and organizations, of all the religions that have played a vital part in the life of the human race. Whenever possible, the articles, which range in length from a paragraph to comprehensive studies of several thousand words, have been submitted for approval by recognized authorities, and this is particularly so in the cases of the Christian Churches and Denominations. But the work is essentially a whole, written by one who has devoted many years to the subject and is a trained encyclopaedist, with an encyclopaedist’s dispassionate yet sympathetic and understanding approach to facts that are of immense and perennial importance and interest. This is an essential historical resource for scholars and researchers of religion.
