Book Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities written by Charles Russell Coulter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the divine is the history of human thought. For as long as men and women have pondered the mysteries of their existence, they have answered their own questions with stories of gods and goddesses. Belief in these deities shaped whole civilizations, yet today many of their names and images lie buried. The Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities makes those names available to the general reader as well as the scholar. This reference work lists all the known gods through recorded history. Alphabetically arranged entries provide the name of each deity (with alternate spellings), as well as notes on names that may be linguistically or functionally related. The tribe or culture that worshiped the deity is identified, and the god's origins and functions are explained. An extensive bibliography provides opportunities for further research and an exhaustive index provides access to the entries through virtually all names, forms and kinds of deities.

Book International Encyclopedia of Gods and Goddesses

Download or read book International Encyclopedia of Gods and Goddesses written by Alice Werner and published by . This book was released on 2011-10-21 with total page 7300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many good books on the mythology of particular peoples or races, Ancient and modern, and much material accessible in books of travel and works on ethnology and religion; for classical antiquity excellent dictionaries of mythology exist. There are also books of narrower or wider range on comparative mythology, besides many in which myth and custom have been pressed into the service of theories of society, civilization, and religion, or are adduced for the illustration of art and archaeology. But a comprehensive collection by competent scholars of Gods and Goddesses from all quarters of the earth and all ages has not hitherto been attempted; for several important parts of the field, no satisfactory works exist in English, while in some there is none in any language. That no comparable work exists of this scope and nature is the justification for this massive work. The intrinsic interest of the subject is very great; for better than almost anything else the idea of Gods reveal men's first notions about their world and the powers at work in it, and the relations between men and those powers. They show what things in their surroundings early engaged men's attention; what things seemed to them to need explanation; and how they explained them. A comprehensive collection like the present lends itself also to comparative study of single myths or systems of myth among different and widely remote peoples. It is one of the merits of this collection that it is made for its own sake, with no theory to maintain or illustrate. The names of the contributors are a sufficient guarantee of the thoroughness and trustworthiness of their work. The volumes are amply illustrated, not for the sake of making picture books, but for the legitimate purposes of illustration - a feature which will add much to the usefulness as well as to the attractiveness of the series. Taken all in all, therefore, the INTERNATIONAL ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF GODS AND GODDESSES may safely be pronounced one of the most important enterprises of this age of co-operative scholarship.

Book Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Ancient Deities written by Charles Russell Coulter and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, humans have pondered the question of their existence. In nearly every society, part of the answer has included some form of god or goddess. For the Mayans, one such deity was Ajtzak, who tried to create humans from wood; for the Yorubas of Africa, Shango controlled the thunder and lightning. The Chinese of the Shang dynasty era worshipped Shang Ti. Evil deities were also part of the answer, as in the case of the Kuvera, the Hindu chief of evil in the Vedic period, and Tu, the Persian or Islamic demon of fatal accidents. All of the known ancient gods, many heretofore obscure or known only from mythological literature, are included in this exhaustive reference work. The focus is on their origins, histories, and functions. The people who believed in each deity are identified, along with alternate names or spellings both old and modern. The descriptions that follow are of the functions, origins and physical nature of the deities. Extensive cross references are provided for alternate spellings and names.

Book Encyclopaedia of Gods and Goddesses

Download or read book Encyclopaedia of Gods and Goddesses written by Nagendra Kr Singh and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encyclopaedia Of Gods And Goddesses Is A Vast Collection And Compilation Of Authoritative Information On Gods And Goddesses Worshipped In All Religions Of The World. The Concept Of Gods And Goddesses Has Developed In Different Ways In Different Settings Of Society. In Human Religious Experience, Hierophanies (Manifestations Of Sacred Power) Provide Centres Of Meaning, Order, Worship, And Ethics. Humans Have Always Felt That Real Life Is In Close Contact With Sacred Power As Encountered In The Form Of Divine Beings. Ideas And Experiences Of These Goddesses And Gods Thus Are Not So Much Intellectual Reflections As Existential Concerns, Revolving Around The Fundamental Human Question Of How To Live Authentically In This World. Gods And Goddesses Fit Most Aptly Into What Have Been Called Polytheistic Cultures, Where The Divine Reality Has Not Been Unified Into Monistic Or Monotheistic Systems. In Looking At The History And Morphology Of Diving Beings, Several Considerations Must Be Kept In Mind. First Of All, Even Though The Goddesses And Gods Of A Particular Society Necessarily Reflect The Values And Traditions Of That Society, It Is Misleading To Attempt To Set Up Direct Correspondences Between The Divine World And Human Society. Second, There Has Been Much Discussion Of The Original Function Of Certain Goddesses And Gods, In Contrast To Added Or Accumulated Functions. Typologies Of Gods And Goddesses Must Span Both The Historical-Cultural Data And The Morphological Possibilities Of These Divine Beings. Some Societies May Have Very Few Of The Possible Types, While Other Societies May Have A Very Full Representation Of The Various Forms Of Divinities. It Is Useful To Adopt Two Different Perspectives On Gods And Goddesses: A Cosmic Typology And A Social Typology. A Classification Of Gods And Goddesses Can Be As Follows:" Cosmic Gods And Goddesses" The Sky Gods And Goddesses" Meteorological Gods And Goddesses" Gods And Goddesses Of Social Functions" Creators And Guardians Of Society And Order" Gods And Goddesses Of Protection And War" Gods And Goddesses Of Esoteric Knowledge And Magic. This Continuing Series Is For The Benefit Of The Students, Teachers And Researchers As Well As Laymen Who Wish To Know About The Origin And Existence Of All The Gods And Goddesses Of World Religions.

Book Encyclopedia of Hinduism

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Hinduism written by Denise Cush and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 1130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Hinduism contains over 900 entries reflecting recent advances in scholarship which have raised new theoretical and methodological issues as well as identifying new areas of study which have not been addressed previously. The debate over the term 'Hinduism' in the light of post-Orientalist critiques is just one example of how once standard academic frameworks have been called into question. Entries range from 150-word definitions of terms and concepts to 5,000-word in-depth investigations of major topics. The Encyclopedia covers all aspects of Hinduism but departs from other works in including more ethnographic and contemporary material in contrast to an exclusively textual and historical approach. It includes a broad range of subject matter such as: historical developments (among them nineteenth and twentieth century reform and revival); geographical distribution (especially the diaspora); major and minor movements; philosophies and theologies; scriptures; deities; temples and sacred sites; pilgrimages; festivals; rites of passage; worship; religious arts (sculpture, architecture, music, dance, etc.); religious sciences (e.g. astrology); biographies of leading figures; local and regional traditions; caste and untouchability; feminism and women's religion; nationalism and the Hindu radical right; and new religious movements. The history of study and the role of important scholars past and present are also discussed. Accessibility to all levels of reader has been a priority and no previous knowledge is assumed. However, the in-depth larger entries and the design of the work in line with the latest scholarly advances means that the volume will be of considerable interest to specialists. The whole is cross-referenced and bibliographies attach to the larger entries. There is a full index.

Book excerpt: No matter what land, culture, country or faith, the Goddess is alive and well and attracting not only women to Her many paths and Her Mysteries but also men who have realised and awakened the feminine within and without as needed in this time of great uncertainty. It is time not to suppress the feminine, but Empower Her, so the world can see the true beauty in everything that She stands for and represents. She is not separate from the world, She is the world, and everything has a little light of the Goddess within them if they only take off their blinkers and let Her shine forth. Let us all now honour the Great Mother and in this great hour of need for a Mother, let us honour all Mothers throughout women’s forgotten past and listen to Her-story not his-story. It is the Patriarchal religions of the world that have created a world of uncertainty, imbalance, and fear. Let us NOW through the Divine Feminine remove the imbalance of the patriarchal warring world and assist our own community in EMPOWERING women and men to awaken to a world of harmony, peace and equilibrium, The Golden Age of Harmony and Equilibrium is NOW!. Let us as a sisterhood, daughters, nieces, sisters, mothers, grandmothers and all women and men under the Light of the Goddess in all Her cultures, names, and differences awaken Her to our world, and through us let Her shine. In honouring the Great Mother we shall spread Her love and honour all Mothers, all women of every faith, culture, and path. “May The Goddess hold you gently in the palms of Her hands, And always close to Her heart!” Lady Tamara Von Forslun Elder High Priestess of the Clan of Boskednan – Tribe of the Crow
