And 'sophia Kezia (atkinson) Thomas, was born in Philadelphia, Penn sylvania, October 28, 1839. He attended and graduated from the Episcopal Acad emy, and at an early age assumed man agement of his father's commercial inter ests, for which he displayed 'marked apti tude. His ability soon won recognition from Jay Cooke, who offered him a posi tion in his banking house, and admitted him to partnership in 1861. In 1863 and throughout the period of the Civil War, when the great financial operations of the government were conducted by the firm, George C. Thomas was one of the active partners. He took a prominent part in the work accomplished by the firm which strengthened the finances of the govern ment so that it was enabled to carry on the war, which cost from three hundred to eight hundred million dollars annually. The great part which Jay Cooke Com pany took in popularizing the government loans has never been fully told. Mr. Thomas was actively instrumental with Mr. Cooke in promoting and carrying on the largest and most successful money operations that any government ever un dertook. Upon the failure of Jay Cooke Com pany, in September, 1873, George C. Thomas gave every dollar of his fortune for the benefit of his creditors. For sev eral months he was compelled to give his personal attention to the work of straight ening out the firm's affairs. Undaunted by his experience, he began business anew before the close of the same year, entering into partnership with Joseph M. Shoemaker, under the style of Joseph M. He organized a night school for the farmer boys who were his equals in years but his inferiors in knowledge. The school was continued 1during the winter months for two years, and Mr. Wade ac quired local renown by his proficiency in mathematics, being distinguished among the youths 0f the neighborhood as the larned one. In May, 1810, Mr. Wade's term of apprenticeship expired and he went to New York, where he entered the service of John F ream, who was a very active party poli tician of the Jefferson school and a mem ber of the Tammany Society, to a branch of which Mr. Wade had belonged at Peeks kill. He now became a zealous member of the New York society, and assisted in lay ing the cornerstone of the renowned Tam many Hall, which was. Later so conspicuous in the political history of the City and State of New York. He was not, however, in sympathy with the organization, and felt that his time was better spent at his work, in which he was making rapid advance ment. Mr. Fream obtained a contract from the city authorities to make the window sashes for the new city hall in the park. About one-half the sashes had circular heads and these, as the most di icult to construct, were assigned to Mr. Wade and all the window sashes of that description, now in that building, are the work of his hands. It was probably the advice of Abram S. Hewitt, which led to the selection of Mr. Fritz as one who could procure the neces sary machinery and secure the erection of the mill with the least possible delay. He was surprised in March, 1864, by his ap pointment to this place with almost un limited powers. His commission under the War Department declared that any ar rangements he might make would be fully carried out by the Government. Mr. Fritz immediately prepared the plans and secured the necessary machinery for the mill, which was built at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and of which his brother Wil liam was made superintendent. William Fritz had been employed at Cambria and at Bethlehem until 1861, when he enlisted in the Union army, and in 1864, he was on fur lough, recovering from a serious wound.
