Book Music and Women of the Commedia dell Arte

Download or read book Music and Women of the Commedia dell Arte written by Anne MacNeil and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music and the Commedia dell'Arte narrates the story of the most famous commedia dell'arte troupe of the late Renaissance, focusing in particular on the representation of women on stage and on the role of music-making in their craft. In its thorough integration of the fields of music history, theatre history, performance studies, women's studies and Classics, this is the first comprehensive analysis of the leading actresses of the Compagnia dei Gelosi and their contributions to the Renaissance stage. Including an extensive survey of documents concerning comedians, their patrons, colleagues and audiences, Music and the Commedia dell'Arte provides a rich context for the study of musical-theatrical performance before the advent of opera and re-defines our perceptions of women, music and theatre in the Renaissance.

Book The Bible and the Crisis of Modernism

Download or read book The Bible and the Crisis of Modernism written by Tomáš Petráček and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed study of the Catholic Church’s acceptance of the historical-critical method and modernization through the pivotal work of European theologians and biblical scholars. One of the few topics in Catholic studies that demonstrates a marked about-face in theological attitudes within the Catholic Church is the reception of the historical-critical method in biblical exegesis and its dramatic rise from outright condemnation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to its official acceptance by the 1990s. The Bible and the Crisis of Modernism tells the dramatic story of the ultimate acceptance of this modern method by the Catholic Church as it worked out the relationship between faith and reason in view of advances in the social and natural sciences. Particular attention to the contributions of Czech theologians to the field of biblical exegesis foregrounds the tensions at play in the church’s gradual recognition of the value of the historical-critical method to a better understanding of the Christian scriptures. In this extensive study of the church’s response to the historical-critical method, Petráček broaches wider topics, such as the relationship between the Catholic Church and society in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the modernization of the church in the face of a changing world, the balance between institutional authority and individual freedom of conscience, and the balance between scholarly independence and ecclesial convictions. The attitude of the Catholic Church to modern scholarly research in many ways reflects its complicated relationship to the modern world in general, as The Bible and the Crisis of Modernism shows. Scholars in biblical studies, Catholic studies, and the history of the church in the Czech Republic will find Petráček’s work an enlightening addition to their collections.

Book Cathedra Veritatis On the Extension of Papal Infallibility

Download or read book Cathedra Veritatis On the Extension of Papal Infallibility written by John Joy and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explores the extension of papal infallibility with regard to its object (doctrine of faith and morals) and with regard to its act (ordinary teaching and extraordinary or solemn definition). Two main questions are taken up in the first part: whether it is certain that the pope is able to speak infallibly about doctrines pertaining to faith or morals which are not directly included in the deposit of faith (e.g. the canonization of saints); and secondly, whether this secondary object of infallibility extends to everything pertaining to faith and morals (so as to include, for example, every particular moral norm of the natural law). The second part is then primarily concerned with the question as to whether the pope is infallible only in the exercise of his extraordinary magisterium or whether the ordinary papal magisterium might also be infallible in some cases.
