Book Encounters After the Sunset Second Edition

Download or read book Encounters After the Sunset Second Edition written by Ricardo Suarez-Gartner and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encounters after the SunsetOftentimes while sitting before a bonfire, I become mesmerized by the flames with their never-ending dance. Soon my eyes focus on them to the exclusion of anything else. After some time I sense that nondescript presences start lurking quietly on the fringes of the fire. These friendly spirits are preterit beings who in their moment made considerable contributions to my genome: my long gone ancestors. The quest to rescue their memories from "among rocks and papers" has been a long journey. The fire has burnt hot and bright, and a few distinct individuals have emerged from among those faded ghosts in my distant past: Saxon and Cornish miners, illiterate peasants and cultured professionals, freed slaves, dispossessed Indians, and Spanish conquistadors and colonists, inter alios. I have collected their stories in this book titled "Encounters after the Sunset" as a bridge for future generations. With the flames now subsided into quiet embers, I will dare claim to have done my duty. It is my hope that other folks will take on the worthy cause of un-forgetting their predecessors and the teachings they might have left behind. In years to come, I may well be patiently awaiting to hear their stories from the blurry edges of a charmed woodfire. The expanded second edition includes maps and a timeline of events. In addition, the text has been reformatted to facilitate a more tiered reading.

Book Ethnography and Encounter

Download or read book Ethnography and Encounter written by Guido van Meersbergen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global operations of the East India Companies were profoundly shaped by European perceptions of foreign lands. Providing a cultural perspective absent from existing economic and institutional histories, Ethnography and Encounter is the first book to systematically explore how Company agents’ understandings of and attitudes towards Asian peoples and societies informed institutional approaches to trade, diplomacy, and colonial governance. Its fine-grained comparisons of Dutch and English activities in seventeenth-century South Asia show how corporate ethnography was produced, how it underpinned given modes of conduct, and how it illuminates connections across space and time. Ethnography and Encounter identifies deep commonalities between Dutch and English discourses and practices, their indebtedness to pan-European ethnographic traditions, and their centrality to wider histories of European expansion.

Download or read book Encountering Islam written by Yew-Foong Hui and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2013 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume seeks to introduce and deepen the understanding of Islam and its role in politics as encountered in different national and transnational contexts in Southeast Asia, eschewing the neo-orientalist approach that has informed public discourse in recent years. In Encountering Islam, the book lingers beyond the summary moment and reflects on the multiple impressions, suppressions and repressions, whether coherent or incoherent, associated with Islam as a socio-political force in public life. To this end, it is not adequate simply to represent the divergent identities associated with Islam in Southeast Asia, whether embedded in state-endorsed orthodoxy or Islamic movements that contest such orthodoxy. It is also important to examine religious minorities in political contexts where Islam is dominant and Muslim communities in national contexts where they are minorities. By situating these religious identities within their larger socio-political contexts, this volume seeks to provide a more holistic understanding of what is encountered as Islam in Southeast Asia.

Book excerpt: Enjoy this steamy comedic series about tabletop gamers in love by geeky romance author Ivy Collins… What happens at TowerCon stays at TowerCon. Luke West is just my flavor of blond, delicious, lawful evil bad boy. Or at least, that’s the character he plays. I’ve got no idea what he’s like in real life, but that doesn’t matter—we’re both at a local gaming convention and in the mood for a one-night stand. Or at least, that’s what I thought was going on. Unfortunately, when I wake up the next morning, I’ve got a bad hangover and a fuzzy recollection of crying all over our wicked, evil cleric. I’m mortified—and worse, unsatisfied. But at least I’m positive I’ll never see the guy again outside of the convention circuit. I figure the embarrassed feeling is mutual—but Luke’s got other plans. He tracks me down and proposes a date, gamer-style: he’s headed to a dark, edgy live-action roleplaying game for a whole weekend, and I’m invited. Specifically, he says, for the purposes of being seduced. I’m starting to suspect that Luke West isn’t actually a wicked, awful man. But maybe I like him when he’s being naughty and when he’s being nice. I’ve got all of this weekend to decide. A Wicked Encounter is the second novel in the Dating & Dragons romance series, though all of the novels can be read as standalones. This spicy contemporary romance is perfect for gamers who play Dungeons & Dragons, and it has a guaranteed happy ending. The story is novella-length, for a quick afternoon read. *** KEYWORDS: geeky romance, nerd romance, contemporary romance, gamer romance, tabletop roleplaying games, RPGs, Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder

Book The Ultimate Encounter

Download or read book The Ultimate Encounter written by Dario Lisiero and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general title "Ultimate Encounter" refers to man's inevitable and unique experience of meeting with God, first after his death (end of his time on earth) and second at the Universal Judgment after the Great Tribulation and the End of Times. Finally the human creature will face his Maker. As man was born alone, and died alone, so he will interact for the first time alone with the most awesome Personality ever. No one could ever capture the feelings and atmosphere of similar encounter, because nobody was ever allowed to come back from the grave and tell the story. This private and personal encounter (particular judgment), according to Christian doctrine, will determine his eternal destiny, which consists of either eternal salvation or eternal damnation. In conclusion, this is the meager knowledge we possess of the most defining moment in the existence of a human being.

Book The White Goddess An Encounter

Download or read book The White Goddess An Encounter written by Simon Gough and published by Galley Beggar Press. This book was released on 2012-08-25 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The White Goddess: An Encounter is a mesmerising tale of sex, lies and divided loyalties. Set between the magic of a bohemian Majorca and the horror of Franco's Madrid, it is a haunting evocation of a lost time and place, dominated by the extraordinary power of Robert Graves, one of the 20th century's greatest writers. When 10-year-old Simon Gough went to Majorca in 1953 he thought he had landed in paradise. Far from the misery of his English boarding school and his parents' divorce, he fell in love - with the tiny village of Deya, with his wild cousin Juan and most of all with his beloved "Grand-Uncle" Robert Graves. When he returned in 1960, paradise had been overrun by beatniks and marijuana - and Simon liked it all the more. But soon he fell for the enchanting Margot Callas, Robert Graves' muse. He found himself entangled in a web of lies and deceit and playing a game whose rules he didn't understand. The repercussions would haunt him for the rest of his life. The Observer says: "Impassioned, with all the intensive drama a youthful affair entails, this "autobifantasy" (as Gough calls it) is as much about a love of a place - the freedom and beauty of Dei? contrasts with the brutality of Franco's Madrid - as of a person. In fact, some of the finest parts of the book are not about Callas but the touching portrait of Graves and his wife Beryl; a tender, observant record both of their relationship and their real selves in their later years."

Book The Understanding of Adultery in the Hebrew Bible

Download or read book The Understanding of Adultery in the Hebrew Bible written by Alexander Izuchukwu Abasili and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-06-09 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adultery, though not an umbrella concept for all the sexual prohibitions in the Hebrew Bible, enjoys a certain pride of place. Remarkably, it is the one sexual prohibition attested in all biblical genres, which makes it very representative in the Hebrew Bible. It is the only Hebrew biblical sexual prohibition explicitly mentioned in the Decalogue. A solid understanding of Hebrew biblical adultery, therefore, is an important step towards grasping the vital role of human sexuality in the Hebrew Bible, both in terms of inter-human relationships and the relationship between the human and the divine. Without prejudice to the contents of the Hebrew biblical lexicons and theological dictionaries, this work aims at providing a comprehensive understanding of adultery in the Hebrew Bible: its meaning, punishments and the implications thereof. Among others, it corrects some wrong assumptions about the concept of adultery in the Hebrew Bible, and provides a balanced and unbiased Hebrew biblical conception of adultery and the implications thereof for todays couples.
