Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miss Carolyn Ashford wants one thing from marriage: love. After spending one informative season in London, she discovers the rarity of the emotion. Resigning herself to a life of spinsterhood, she leans on her brother's charity. When she stumbles upon a secret garden on the Duke of Demoon's property, she sets to restore it. As the garden comes to life, so does her spirit, as though she's finally found her place. Edmund Marsham, Duke of Demoon, for over a decade hasn't shown his scarred face--the only outward sign of surviving a devastating fire in his youth--to anyone outside of Moonlight Castle. Seeking sanctuary from his callous mother, he rides off to his grandmother's secret garden. Once there, he is surprised to find a young woman has brought life back into the neglected place. Although he keeps his identity from her, they form an unexpected friendship. Before long, Edmund begins to want impossible things. Things he knows he can't have. Carolyn knows her time with Edmund is limited considering he has no desire for a wife or child. With another man vying for her attention, she knows with him she will have everything that Edmund denies her. She attempts to distance herself from Edmund, but her traitorous body has other plans. Will her heart survive a temporary romance with Edmund, and will those memories be enough to satisfy a lifetime without him?

Book excerpt: The Leopard's Spots: A Romance of the White Man's Burden, Volume I of the "Reconstruction Trilogy," is the first part of a three part historical novel meant to portray life in the immediate period following the end of the US Civil War in the South. Written by a Southern sympathizer, political activist and Baptist preacher, the Reconstruction trilogy tells the story of Charles Gaston, the son of a famous Confederate colonel, who leads his men from the state of North Carolina in a rebellion against the Reconstruction policy which was implemented in the South after the war. Other characters featured include Simon Legree, an ex-slave driver turned Reconstruction leader, emancipated slaves, former soldiers from both sides, and unscrupulous politicians, all set against a love story based around the main character. The personalities in the book are fictional, but are all based on real people, giving the work a uniquely realistic air, which made it a best seller in its time. The entire first edition was sold before it was printed, and the book sold over 100,000 copies in its first 6 months. The other two volumes in this trilogy, "The Clansman" and "The Traitor," were as successful as "The Leopard's Spots," with "The Clansman" becoming the basis for the famous 1915 epic silent movie "Birth of a Nation."

Download or read book Ask Mamma Or The Richest Commoner In England written by Robert Smith Surtees and published by . This book was released on 2022-05-28 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Smith Surtees's notable novel, 'Ask Mamma'; or, The Richest Commoner In England, delicately weaves the narrative thread through the amorous escapades and tribulations of two generations within the Pringle family. An exquisite example of Victorian literary artistry, it mirrors the social tapestry of the era, rich with satirical undertones and incisive wit. The literary style of Surtees is well reflected in this work, as it embodies the author's unique blend of humor with a keen eye for social observation, underscored by a tapestry of dialogue that vividly echoes the colloquial speech of the time. The sociopolitical context of the mid-19th century serves as a silent interlocutor throughout the text, where the juxtaposition of wealth, class, and romantic endeavors intermingle with the perceptive delineation of English country life. Surtees, wielding his pen with the same dexterity as a master painter, was significantly influenced by his own experiences and observations of English society. His background in legal studies and journalism undoubtedly contributed to the precision and depth of his societal portraiture. With an insider's perspicacity, he captures the ethos of the affluent classes, while never straying far from the sports and the rural lifestyle that were his hallmark. 'Recommendation to readers: 'Ask Mamma' emerges as a compelling invitation to delve into a vibrant literary past, with Surtees as your erudite guide through the intricate labyrinths of Victorian mores and follies. The book is recommended for enthusiasts of classic literature with a penchant for societal narratives, laced with humor and historical insight. For those captivated by the exploration of family dynamics against the backdrop of a pivotal era in English history, this novel offers both entertainment and enlightenment, assuring its place on the shelf of timeless works that continue to resonate with contemporary readers.
