Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coreveth was a beautiful country and home to a variety of nonhuman creatures: elves, ogres, dwarves, and the like. Until one day, four human fishermen stumbled upon it and turned that world upside down. They brought into the country more of their kind by the shiploads and built four kingdoms, appointing each a human king. After a few generations and two wars, the nonhumans found themselves forced out from the kingdoms they helped to build and unwelcome even in the country they had called home for as far back as they could remember. Now King Richard, the leader of the purge of nonhumans from the kingdoms and the ruler of Kodia, sends his son, Prince Piers, to wed the princess of Oniraron and unite the kingdoms in his attempt to gain power and rule over the country. As the prince travels with his fiancée, his best friend and also the general to the Kodian army, the strongest of the country’s spellcasters, and a lawless forest dweller, he discovers the damage the purge has caused, how much control his father already has over the weaker kingdoms, and how their people suffer. The people find hope in the charming words of the benevolent prince and in his promises to save them from his father’s tyranny. But are there darker intentions hidden behind his kind eyes? Could he be just as sinister as his father? While there are those who vie for power, some are learning not to judge those around them by the positions they hold or the name of their breed. After all, life is not a fairy tale, and the heroes do not always so boldly wear their crowns. But most importantly... Not everything is what it seems.

Perfect for fans of Tomi Adeyemi, Leigh Bardugo, and V. E. Schwab. To Finn Voy, magic is two things: a knife to hold under the chin of anyone who crosses her…and a disguise she shrugs on as easily as others pull on cloaks. As a talented faceshifter, it’s been years since Finn has seen her own face, and that’s exactly how she likes it. But when Finn gets caught by a powerful mobster, she’s forced into an impossible mission: steal a legendary treasure from Castallan’s royal palace or be stripped of her magic forever. After the murder of his older brother, Prince Alfehr is first in line for the Castallan throne. But Alfie can’t help but feel that he will never live up to his brother’s legacy. Riddled with grief, Alfie is obsessed with finding a way to bring his brother back, even if it means dabbling in forbidden magic. But when Finn and Alfie’s fates collide, they accidentally unlock a terrible, ancient power—which, if not contained, will devour the world. And with Castallan’s fate in their hands, Alfie and Finn must race to vanquish what they have unleashed, even if it means facing the deepest darkness in their pasts.

Book Kabbalistic Revolution

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The set of Jewish mystical teachings known as Kabbalah are often imagined as timeless texts, teachings that have been passed down through the millennia. Yet, as this groundbreaking new study shows, Kabbalah flourished in a specific time and place, emerging in response to the social prejudices that Jews faced. Hartley Lachter, a scholar of religion studies, transports us to medieval Spain, a place where anti-Semitic propaganda was on the rise and Jewish political power was on the wane. Kabbalistic Revolution proposes that, given this context, Kabbalah must be understood as a radically empowering political discourse. While the era’s Christian preachers claimed that Jews were blind to the true meaning of scripture and had been abandoned by God, the Kabbalists countered with a doctrine that granted Jews a uniquely privileged relationship with God. Lachter demonstrates how Kabbalah envisioned this increasingly marginalized group at the center of the universe, their mystical practices serving to maintain the harmony of the divine world. For students of Jewish mysticism, Kabbalistic Revolution provides a new approach to the development of medieval Kabbalah. Yet the book’s central questions should appeal to anyone with an interest in the relationships between religious discourses, political struggles, and ethnic pride.

A dark priestess, intent on escaping through an enchanted door into another world, invokes a dragon from his prison, The Void, into the human body of a pirate so he can locate and capture a young but powerful light goddess to assist her in gaining her freedom. However, the longer the dragon stays in the pirate’s body, the more human he becomes, and as he frantically searches for the young goddess, she is also searching for him to break the priestess’s enchantment and send him back to The Void, and free the pirate. This fourth and final book in the Dragon’s Tear Chronicles follows the stories of Kaida and Meelay as they attempt to break Hariah’s enchantment and return the Blood Dragon, Valeskas, to The Void.

Book With Us More Than Ever

    Book Details:
  • Author : Yoram Bilu
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2020-07-21
  • ISBN : 1503612422
  • Pages : 408 pages

Download or read book With Us More Than Ever written by Yoram Bilu and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson was the charismatic leader of the Chabad Hasidic movement and its designated Messiah. Yet when he died in 1994, the messianic fervor he inspired did not subside. Through traditional means and digital technologies, a group of radical Hasidim, the Meshichistim, still keep the Rebbe palpably close—engaging in ongoing dialogue, participating in specific rituals, and developing an ever-expanding visual culture of portraits and videos. With Us More Than Ever focuses on this group to explore how religious practice can sustain the belief that a messianic figure is both present and accessible. Yoram Bilu documents a unique religious experience that is distinctly modern. The rallying point of the Meshichistim—that the Rebbe is "with us more than ever"—is sustained through an elaborate system that creates the sense of his constant and pervasive presence in the lives of his followers. The virtual Rebbe that emerges is multiple, visible, accessible, and highly decentralized, the epicenter of a truly messianic movement in the twenty-first century. Combining ethnographic fieldwork and cognitive science with nuanced analysis, Bilu documents the birth and development of a new religious faith, describing the emergence of new spiritual horizons, a process common to various religious movements old and new.

Book Birth in Kabbalah and Psychoanalysis

Download or read book Birth in Kabbalah and Psychoanalysis written by Ruth Kara-Ivanov Kaniel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birth in Kabbalah and Psychoanalysis examines the centrality of "birth" in Jewish literature, gender theory, and psychoanalysis, thus challenging the centrality of death in Western culture and existential philosophy. In this groundbreaking study, Ruth Kara-Ivanov Kaniel discuss similarities between Biblical, Midrashic, Kabbalistic, and Hasidic perceptions of birth, as well as its place in contemporary cultural and psychoanalytic discourse. In addition, this study shows how birth functions as a vital metaphor that has been foundational to art, philosophy, religion, and literature. Medieval Kabbalistic literature compared human birth to divine emanation, and presented human sexuality and procreation as a reflection of the sefirotic structure of the Godhead – an attempt, Kaniel claims, to marginalize the fear of death by linking the humane and divine acts of birth. This book sheds new light on the image of God as the "Great Mother" and the crucial role of the Shekhinah as a cosmic womb. Birth in Kabbalah and Psychoanalysis won the Gorgias Prize and garnered significant appreciation from psychoanalytic therapists in clinical practice dealing with birth trauma, postpartum depression, and in early infancy distress.

Book excerpt: In its historical development from late antiquity to the present, western esotericism has repeatedly been the issue of polemical discourse. This volume engages the polemical structures that underlie both the identities within and the controversy about esoteric currents in European history. From Jewish and Christian kabbalah through heretical discourse and interconfessional polemics in early modernity to the legitimization of esoteric identity in modern culture, the 12 chapters, accompanied by an editors’ introduction, provide a cornucopia of relevant cases that are interpreted in a framework of polemical discourse and ‘Othering’. This volume sheds new light on the ultimately polemical structure of western esotericism and thus opens new vistas for further research into esoteric discourse.

Book Abraham Abulafia s Esotericism

Download or read book Abraham Abulafia s Esotericism written by Moshe Idel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-10-12 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on Abraham Abulafia's esoteric thought in relation to Maimonides, Maimonideans, and Islamic thought in the line of Leo Strauss' theory of the history of philosophy. A survey of Abulafia's sources leads into an analysis of the esoteric meaning on the famous parable of the three rings, considering also the possible connection between this parable, which Abdulafia inserted into a book dedicated to his student, the 13th century rabbi Nathan the wise, and the Lessing's Play "Nathan the Wise." The book also examines Abulafia's universalistic understanding of the nature of the Bible, the Hebrew language, and the people of Israel (or the Sinaic revelation). The universal aspects of Abulafia’s thought have been put in relief against the more widespread Kabbalistic views which are predominantly particularistic. A number of texts have also been identified here for the first time as authored by Abulafia.

Book Eternity Now

  • Author : Wojciech Tworek
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2019-07-15

Download or read book Eternity Now written by Wojciech Tworek and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Habad movement, formed in eighteenth-century Belarus, has developed into one of the most influential streams of Hasidic Judaism. Drawing on both mystical sermons and legal writings of its founder, Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liady (1745–1812), Eternity Now provides the first account of the historiosophical dimensions of early Habad doctrine. Challenging the commonly held view that Shneur Zalman was primarily concerned with supratemporal transcendence, Wojciech Tworek reveals the importance of time and history in his teachings. Tworek argues that the worldly dimensions of Shneur Zalman's thought were largely responsible for the rapid growth of Habad at the turn of the nineteenth century and fostered its transformation from an elitist circle into a mass movement. Tworek's readings of Hebrew and Yiddish sources demonstrate the implications of these ideas not only for male scholars but also for non-scholars, Jewish women, and even non-Jews. Philosophical and kabbalistic thought joined together to form a model of religious experience attractive to a broad audience, laying an ideological foundation for the missionary messianism that was to become a hallmark of Habad in the twentieth century.
