Book excerpt: The ability of stannous fluoride solutions of varying concentration made up in tap water to decrease enamel solubility was tested on 540 extracted human molars. No deleterious effect at tributable to aging of test solutions was noted at any time in the 8-week test period. Conversely, protective ability tended to increase with age, this being particularly true during the first few hours after mixing. At these intervals this protective performance was negatively correlated with the pH of the solution. The pH of tap-water solutions was consistently lower than in equally aged preparations made up in distilled water further purified in an ion-exchange column. This lower pH was held to enhance the uptake of tin by enamel and thus to account for the higher protection provided by the tap-water solutions. (Author).

Performance was measured by the amount of phosphorus removed from enamel before and after fluoride treatment. Phosphorus was determined automatically on the AutoAnalyzer. SnF2 solutions of 5.0, 10.0, and 20.0 percent concentration were significantly more effective than 0.4, 0.7, and 1.0 percent solutions. Aqueous preparations of stannous fluoride maintained their protective potency throughout the 12-week experimental period.

Book excerpt: The materials listed in the report were developed in the Experimental Dentistry Branch, USAF School of Aerospace Medicine, in response to specific USAF requirements in preventive dentistry. This review outlines procedures for the preparation and use of these compounds and, when applicable, provides directions for obtaining the fully prepared material. The USAF Dental Service endorsement of the SAM series of topical SnF2 agents is based upon in vitro studies demonstrating the ability of these preparations to protect dental enamel from acid decalcification. It has been shown that: (a) stannous fluoride solutions of low concentration provide excellent protection, and (b) stannous fluoride should be frequently applied to provide maximal benefit.

Book excerpt: A laboratory investigation was carried out in which both commercially available and laboratory prepared prophylaxis pastes were evaluated as to ability to decrease enamel solubility in lactic acid. Commercially available mixtures from which pastes containing approximately 8% to 10% stannous fluoride were prepared, reduced enamel solubility by about 60% to 80%. Higher concentrations of stannous fluoride provided somewhat more protection, but this increase was not sufficient to offset the disadvantage of increased clinical complications reported for these pastes. The incorporation of stannous fluoride in a prophylaxis mixture is to be recommended. While the subsequent topical application of a stannous fluoride solution is also desirable, it is recognized that the time required for this procedure must be markedly reduced if universal acceptance is to be attained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dental prophylaxis paste containing 2.0% stannous fluoride in water-free solution was tested for its ability to reduce enamel solubility. The paste was applied with a rubber cup and also by a 2-minute topical application of a slurry made of equal proportions of the paste and water. Evaluation continued over an aging period of 16 weeks. The prophylaxis paste, applied full strength in a rubber cup, reduced enamel solubility in the range of 55% to 63%. Age did not significantly affect the protective performance of the paste. When the paste was applied as a topical application, its protection ranged from 58% to 72%. A significant increase in effectiveness was associated with aging. It is suggested that chemical stability, a factor related to the preservation of the stannous ion, is induced in this paste by placing the stannous fluoride in solution in glycerin and scrupulously avoiding the incorporation of water at any stage of compounding.
