Book Enabling Process Management for Loosely Framed Knowledge intensive Processes

Download or read book Enabling Process Management for Loosely Framed Knowledge intensive Processes written by Steven Mertens and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-23 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a revised version of the PhD dissertation written by the author at the Department of Business Informatics and Operations Management at Ghent University in Belgium. It addresses shortcomings in Business Process Management concerning loosely framed knowledge-intensive processes, which are characterized by their numerous valid process variants and their reliance on knowledge workers to apply their knowledge to decide on a suitable process variant that fits the context of a specific process execution. The goal was to lay the foundation for a process-aware business process management (IT-)system to support such processes. Several proof-of-concept implementations have been made for the core components and were evaluated in the domain of the healthcare. Starting from an artificial, but realistic, case about patients that arrive in the emergency room with suspected arm fractures and later progressing to a case study of the diagnosis and treatment of patients in the emergency department of a real hospital, using data from their patient files. In 2020, the PhD dissertation won the “CAiSE PhD award”, granted to outstanding PhD theses in the field of Information Systems Engineering.

Book Intellectual Capital Revisited

Download or read book Intellectual Capital Revisited written by Cristina Chaminade and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book extends the analysis of intellectual capital and underlines the idea that its study is multidisciplinary. Its publication is timely as it brings together a collection of the key thought leaders in the area who provide new perspectives into this important topic. This book is essential reading by those engaged in understanding the knowledge economy and intellectual capital in organisational settings.' - James Guthrie, The University of Sydney, Australia This book brings together some of the founders of the IC movement in Europe to critically review the virtues and shortcomings of intellectual capital as a managerial concept. More questions on the future of IC study are perhaps raised than answered as the contributors attempt to open new avenues of research. The contributors acknowledge that the concept of managing intellectual capital is paradoxical in many respects. First and foremost, the boundaries of the knowledge intensive organization are fading. Organizations are open, networked and global, and intellectual capital mobile and elusive - so how can something with no boundaries be managed? Furthermore, is it possible that in a knowledge-intensive society, firms that do not focus on their intellectual capital are successful? That is, are there any pre-requisites for intellectual capital to be relevant? The book explores such paradoxes in the knowledge intensive organization, critically discusses the limitations of intellectual capital and revises the agenda for intellectual capital studies in the future. Drawing on empirical evidence including two EU funded projects involving researchers, practitioners and policy makers from international associations such as the OECD and the EU, this book will prove a thought provoking read for those with an interest in various aspects of management such as: knowledge management, management control, management accounting, strategic management and management of innovation.

Book Towards Very Large Knowledge Bases

Download or read book Towards Very Large Knowledge Bases written by N. J. I. Mars and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early days of artificial intelligence it was widely believed that powerful computers would, in the future, enable mankind to solve many real-world problems through the use of very general inference procedures and very little domain-specific knowledge. With the benefit of hindsight, this view can now be called quite naive. The field of expert systems, which developed during the early 1970s, embraced the paradigm that Knowledge is Power - even very fast computers require very large amounts of very specific knowledge to solve non-trivial problems. Thus, the field of large knowledge bases has emerged.

Book Legal Methods of Mainstreaming Climate Change Adaptation in Chinese Water Management

Download or read book Legal Methods of Mainstreaming Climate Change Adaptation in Chinese Water Management written by Xiangbai He and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses why, whether and how the existing legal framework on water management in China could make climate change adaptation a mainstream issue. The book uses a table to illustrate the distinctions and similarities between IWRM and water-centered adaptation to analyze the possibilities of mainstreaming adaptation. The new water-planning processes and EIA are also illustrated in the form of figures showing the differences after factoring in adaptation considerations. Interviews with water managers to obtain their perception and attitudes towards climate change adaptation offer new perspectives for readers. The adaptation- mainstreaming approach, which finds a way to balance various interests and tasks, will arouse the interests of those readers who argue that climate change is only one of the issues challenging water management, and that poverty reduction, environmental protection and living standard improvement are even more important. Readers will also be interested to discover that the adaptation mainstreaming approach could be applied in water management institutions such as water planning and EIA. In addition, the book offers a clear explanation of the challenges of adaptation to the existing water-related legal framework from a theoretical perspective, and provides theoretical and practical recommendations.
