Book Rethinking the Nature of War

Download or read book Rethinking the Nature of War written by Isabelle Duyvesteyn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2005 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpretations of war as driven by politics and state rationale, formulated most importantly by the nineteenth-century practitioner Carl von Clausewitz, have received strong criticism. Political explanations have been said to fall short in explaining conflicts in the Balkans, Africa, Asia and the attacks of September 11 2001 in the United States. This book aims to re-evaluate these criticisms by not only carefully scrutinising Clausewitz's arguments and their applicability, but also by a careful reading of the criticism itself. In doing so, the contributions on this book present empirical evidence on the basis of several case studies, addressing various aspects of modern war, such as the actors, conduct and purposes of war. The book concludes that while the debate on the nature of war has far from run its course, the interpretation of war as postulated by Clausewitz is not as inapplicable as some have claimed.

Book The Francoist Military Trials

Download or read book The Francoist Military Trials written by Peter Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Spain between 1936-1945, the Franco regime carried out one Europe’s more brutal but less remembered programs of mass repression. Many were murdered by the regime’s death squads, and in some areas Francoists also subjected up to 15% of the population to summary military trials. Here many suffered the death sentence or jail terms up to thirty years. Although historians have recognised the staggering scale of the trials, they have tended to overlook the mass participation that underpinned them. In contrast to the discussion in other European countries, little attention has been paid to the wide scale collusion in the killings and incarcerations in Spain. Exploring mass complicity in the trials of hundreds of thousands of defeated Republicans following the end of the Spanish Civil War, The Francoist Military Trials probes local Francoists’ accusations whereby victims were selected for prosecution in military courts. It also shows how insubstantial and hostile testimony formed the bedrock of ‘investigations’, secured convictions, and shaped the harsh sentencing practices of Franco’s military judges. Using civil court records, it also documents how grassroots Francoists continued harassing Republicans for many years after they emerged from prison. Challenging the popularly prevalent view that the Franco regime imposed a police state upon a passive Spanish society, the evidence Anderson uncovers here illustrates that local state officials and members of the regime’s support base together forged a powerful repressive system that allowed them to wage war on elements of their own society to a greater extent than perhaps even the Nazis managed against their own population.

Book Immunogenetics of Autoimmune Disease

Download or read book Immunogenetics of Autoimmune Disease written by Jorge R. Oksenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: utoimmunity is the downstream outcome of a rather extensive and coordinated series of events that include loss of self-tolerance, peripheral lymphocyte Aactivation, disruption of the blood-systems barriers, cellular infiltration into the target organs and local inflammation. Cytokines, adhesion molecules, growth factors, antibodies, and other molecules induce and regulate critical cell functions that perpetuate inflammation, leading to tissue injury and clinical phenotype. The nature and intensity of this response as well as the physiological ability to restore homeostasis are to a large extent conditioned by the unique amino acid sequences that define allelic variants on each of the numerous participating mol ecules. Therefore, the coding genes in their germline configuration play a primary role in determining who is at risk for developing such disorders, how the disease progresses, and how someone responds to therapy. Although genetic components in these diseases are clearly present, the lack of obvious and homogeneous modes of transmission has slowed progress by prevent ing the full exploitation of classical genetic epidemiologic techniques. Furthermore, autoimmune diseases are characterized by modest disease risk heritability and m- tifaceted interactions with environmental influences. Yet, several recent discoveries have dramatically changed our ability to examine genetic variation as it relates to human disease. In addition to the development of large-scale laboratory methods and tools to efficiently recognize and catalog DNA diversity, over the past few years there has been real progress in the application of new analytical and data-manage ment approaches.

Book excerpt: It may feel like authentic faith. It may even look like the real deal. Yet it's often easy to settle for the souvenir t-shirt—the appearance of a transformed heart—instead of taking the actual trip through true life-change. We find ourselves settling for a personal faith that's been polluted by culture, and diluted by other people's take on spirituality. Christianish tells the story of one man's journey to move from the in-between to a life that's centered on Christ. To move forward, author Mark Steele goes back to the beginning, to examine Christ's life and words. Through stories and insights that are sometimes profound, often hilarious, and always honest, Mark delivers a compelling look at what our faith is all about.

New information about the manuscripts of the poem, new historical discoveries, and new investigations of its literary, cultural and theoretical scope have fundamentally altered the very meaning of Langland's art. This Companion thus critically surveys traditional scholarship, with the aim of recuperating its best insights, and it ventures forth into newer areas of inquiry attuned to questions of social setting, institutional context, intellectual and literary history, theory, and the revitalized fields of codicology and paleography. By proceeding through chapters that offer cumulatively wider views as well as stand-alone analyses of topics most crucial to understanding Piers Plowman, this Companion gives serious students and seasoned scholars alike up-to-date knowledge of this intricate and beautiful poem.

Book Only Wonder Comprehends

  • Release : 2018-03-05
  • ISBN : 0814644872
  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book Only Wonder Comprehends written by John Garvey and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over forty years, John Garvey was the “ballast” of Commonweal magazine. His award-winning essays and consistently notable columns revealed not only his acuity and alacrity, but his uncommon spiritual insight. These in turn provided momentum and substance for whatever followed in an issue of the magazine because Garvey never hesitated to wrestle with some of the most challenging and intractable topics of the day, and did so with a rich pastoral sensitivity, and a refreshing and rare intelligence. Only Wonder Comprehends gleans from John Garvey’s many contributions to Commonweal that reflect his spiritual depth and deep appreciation of history, politics, theology, and culture. Steeped in the Christian tradition, Garvey loved to write and, in return, his readers relished what he wrote. It is hoped that this collection of his writings from Commonweal will inspire readers to cultivate a similar sense of attentiveness and commitment, for as the author himself observed, “Religious traditions are meant to transform us, not to affirm us as we are.”

Download or read book Funny Comments Cruise Ship Passengers written by Bradley Mckay and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-05-07 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book began sixteen years ago, whilst walking on the pier in an exotic destination. A passenger approached me and blurted out the most bizarre question I had ever heard. I grabbed the nearest piece of paper, and wrote the comment down in order to capture the moment to share with my fellow crew members later on. From that day forth, I carried a piece of paper in my top pocket to capture the moment as it was said. I used the 10 second rule, to give the passenger the chance to realise what it was they had said. The result of recording these questions and statements throughout the years gave me the inspiration to write this book. At the time of hearing the comments, I had a burning desire to reply with an equally bizarre answer. However, I had some empathy due to them being on a cruise which can have an effect on some people's grasp of reality. As you navigate through this book, some questions where so outrageous, that I was completely baffled and had no response to include. I have personally witnessed every comment in this book, including the horrific spelling and grammatical errors produced in written comments. I hope you enjoy reading each comment and look out for some that you may have said yourself. After all we can all say things that seem perfectly reasonable at the time when on holiday.
