Download or read book Mexicanos written by Manuel G. Gonzales and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly revised and updated, Mexicanos tells the rich and vibrant story of Mexicans in the United States. Emerging from the ruins of Aztec civilization and from centuries of Spanish contact with indigenous people, Mexican culture followed the Spanish colonial frontier northward and put its distinctive mark on what became the southwestern United States. Shaped by their Indian and Spanish ancestors, deeply influenced by Catholicism, and tempered by an often difficult existence, Mexicans continue to play an important role in U.S. society, even as the dominant Anglo culture strives to assimilate them. Thorough and balanced, Mexicanos makes a valuable contribution to the understanding of the Mexican population of the United States—a growing minority who are a vital presence in 21st-century America.

Download or read book Telling Border Life Stories written by Donna M Kabalen de Bichara and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normal0falsefalsefalseEN-USX-NONEX-NONEVoices from the borderlands push against boundaries in more ways than one, as Donna M. Kabalen de Bichara ably demonstrates in this investigation into the twentieth-century autobiographical writing of four women of Mexican origin who lived in the American Southwest. Until recently, little attention has been paid to the writing of the women included in this study. As Kabalen de Bichara notes, it is precisely such historical exclusion of texts written by Mexican American women that gives particular significance to the reexamination of the five autobiographical works that provide the focus for this in-depth study. “Early Life and Education” and Dew on the Thorn by Jovita González (1904–83), deal with life experiences in Texas and were likely written between 1926 and the 1940s; both texts were published in 1997. Romance of a Little Village Girl, first published in 1955, focuses on life in New Mexico, and was written by Cleofas Jaramillo (1878–1956) when the author was in her seventies. A Beautiful, Cruel Country, by Eva Antonio Wilbur-Cruce (1904–98), introduces the reader to history and a way of life that developed in the cultural space of Arizona. Created over a ten-year period, this text was published in 1987, just eleven years before the author’s death. Hoyt Street, by Mary Helen Ponce (b. 1938), began as a research paper during the period of the autobiographer’s undergraduate studies (1974–80), and was published in its present form in 1993. These border autobiographies can be understood as attempts on the part of the Mexican American female autobiographers to put themselves into the text and thus write their experiences into existence.
Download or read book Espa ol Contempor neo written by George De Mello and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1990 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is designed for use in college 3rd-4th year Spanish language classes. Each of the fifteen chapters begins with a brief selection in Spanish from a recent Spanish-language publication. Following the reading selection a questionnaire based on the content of the reading material channels the student into using vocabulary employed in the reading. Three topics are then given, suggested by the content of the reading and designed to provoke conversation in class or to serve as themes for compositions. The second part of each chapter is a study of language difficulties often encountered by American students at the junior or senior level of Spanish language study. Each of these sections is based on a word or phrase appearing in the reading. The third section of each chapter is a grammar lesson which presents one of the principal topics of Spanish syntax, stressing those points of the topic which continue to be problematical to advanced students. Each grammar section consists of a clearly worded explanation of the basic theory underlying the topic under discussion, which is further clarified by a large number of example sentences.

Download or read book The Town of Obanos written by A. S. Contin and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2014-07-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Version I am the author of this book of memories. I left my country (Euskal Herria, the Basque country), when I was fourteen years old. Now, near the 80's, I considered opportune to give a testimony of my native town, and of honest, beautiful people, full with generosity, that I had the privilege of knowing in that time, and that they have been a lighthouse that has guided me during the whole rest of my life. What this has of interesting is that the experiences that I had in that distant time, the lessons and the examples that I had the privilege of receiving, and the fact that at the present time I don't believe that still it exists something similar in any part of the planet. I don't want to die without before leaving behind my homage and my gratefulness to those who gave their trust to the child that I was, and that, in a certain way, I have continued being, thanks to all of them. I am an old man who refuses to surrender before the ailments of the body that are the product of the advanced age. In the same way that the old automobiles spend too much time with the mechanics, our old bodies have to spend a good part of their last days with the doctors. However, I still have something to make and it is to write books. I hope that you will enjoy this work Spanish Version Soy el autor de este libro de recuerdos.
Download or read book Multicultural Literature for Latino Bilingual Children written by Ellen Riojas Clark and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are volumes that fall into the category of children’s literature, there appears to be relatively few that explore the needs of bilingual learners and the linguistic and sociocultural context of Latino children’s literature. This volume makes a needed contribution by addressing the social, cultural, academic, and linguistic needs of Latino bilingual learners who are still underserved through current school practices. We aim to conceptualize different forms of social knowledge so that they can serve as cultural resources for learning, acquiring knowledge, and transforming self and identity. This volume presents a balance of theory, research, and practice that speak to authentic multicultural Latino literature and helps ensure its availability for all students. The intended outcome of this volume then is to create a heightened awareness of the cultural and linguistic capital held by the Latino community, to increase Latino students’ social capital through the design of critical pedagogical practices, and for the formulation of a new perspective, that of Latino multicultural literature for children.

Book excerpt: “Before getting my diagnosis, I walked through life without purpose, without a reason to be. What happened in my life needed to happen, I needed to live it. I needed to pass through these painful experiences to be the woman that I am today, a better version of myself.” Adamari López, the internationally known actress, had everything—a loving family, a perfect boyfriend, and a leading role on a successful telanovela in Mexico—when three words changed her life forever: you have cancer. Suddenly, in only a few months, the world that she knew collapsed and her life was turned upside-down. In Thriving, the normally private López reveals the triumphs and trials of her life, sharing anecdotes of her childhood and her family while describing her journey through breast cancer; the sudden illness of her mother; her wedding, one of the happiest days of her life; and, later, what she considers to be the hardest blow of all: the dissolution of her marriage. However, through it all, her strength and her faith never failed, and her loving and positive spirit, along with her perpetual smile, helped her to discover a new and rewarding start in love and in life. Download or read book The House of Broken Angels written by Luis Alberto Urrea and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this "raucous, moving, and necessary" story by a Pulitzer Prize finalist (San Francisco Chronicle), the De La Cruzes, a family on the Mexican-American border, celebrate two of their most beloved relatives during a joyous and bittersweet weekend. "All we do, mija, is love. Love is the answer. Nothing stops it. Not borders. Not death." In his final days, beloved and ailing patriarch Miguel Angel de La Cruz, affectionately called Big Angel, has summoned his entire clan for one last legendary birthday party. But as the party approaches, his mother, nearly one hundred, dies, transforming the weekend into a farewell doubleheader. Among the guests is Big Angel's half brother, known as Little Angel, who must reckon with the truth that although he shares a father with his siblings, he has not, as a half gringo, shared a life. Across two bittersweet days in their San Diego neighborhood, the revelers mingle among the palm trees and cacti, celebrating the lives of Big Angel and his mother, and recounting the many inspiring tales that have passed into family lore, the acts both ordinary and heroic that brought these citizens to a fraught and sublime country and allowed them to flourish in the land they have come to call home. Teeming with brilliance and humor, authentic at every turn, The House of Broken Angels is Luis Alberto Urrea at his best, and cements his reputation as a storyteller of the first rank. "Epic . . .
