Book excerpt: This fantastic addition to the Colin the Librarian series contains four new exciting stories. Colin's Second Chinese Adventure A question by Colin's little daughter Charlotte leads to the phoenix on the magic bookmark transporting the whole family plus Sammy and M back to ancient China to the very palace and time Colin and Sammy experienced an earlier adventure. The story unfolds like a pantomime with the Emperor playing crazy golf and his enemies the Ugly Brothers being defeated by Colin and M aided by Fleddy the dragon. An Emu On Safari Colin and M find themselves in two different countries more than 50 years apart, as they foil two attempts by Colonel Chumbley a safari leader to kill an elephant as the final item on his list. First M enables an elephant to shoot and wound Chumbley, but still determined to complete his task, the colonel, due to the actions of an invisible emu, only manages to shoot and wound himself. At the end of the story how did Mrs. Biggle get all those excellent photos of African animals on her digital camera? She was dreaming, wasn’t she? The Cave Emu An adventure set in prehistoric times. Colin as a 5 year old boy is transported by the magic phoenix bookmark with Sammy and M along with a couple called Audrey and Neville to meet a tribe of cave-dwellers. After Colin, M and Sammy capture two marauding dinosaurs and M creates his own cave painting the phoenix takes Colin and his companions back to Neville’s home in the 1980s. Eventually Colin realises what is so familiar about Neville. This man is his father! Immediately the phoenix sends Colin back to the present day. There is the hint of a further adventure to explain a mystery concerning Colin’s own family. The King’s New Knight A middle-aged Colin meets a middle-aged King Arthur at Camelot. Colin’s friend Jez Jellysox suddenly appears in the role of Sir Galahad and survives sitting at the Round Table on the lethal Siege Perilous. He single-handedly accomplishes two tasks, including the rescuing of the king’s cousin Lady Gwendoline from a high tower. Finally he launches a sole attack against the enemy shield-wall facing the castle, but it is actually M walking invisibly behind him in what looks like an empty suit of armour who panics the besiegers. Then with the aid of the magic phoenix bookmark Colin restores Arthur’s hearing. Having arrived safely home again, Colin and Olivia receive a text message from Jellysox informing them that he will be bringing his new lady friend Gwen around to see them tomorrow. Whatever next?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fantastic new addition to the Colin the Librarian series contains eight exciting stories. Read how the magic phoenix bookmark causes Colin together with his invisible emu friend to be dropped by parachute behind enemy lines, how he encounters a skeleton in a cupboard with an active mobile phone in its hand, and how the sinister British spymaster F for Frank involves him in a series of extremely dangerous missions by way of the Arctic Circle and the Russian Revolution of 1919. The actions of M the emu continue to be bold, inventive and frequently hilarious. The Emu Has Landed Behind enemy lines Colin and M sabotage the secret trial of a radio-controlled tank. By impersonating Adolf Hitler Colin rescues a captured Polish airman, who turns out to be the grandfather of one of his best friends. Pond Life Colin and his family and M the emu find themselves in Mexico with Spymaster F for Frank. They rescue Yvon yet again and capture a runaway British traitor. However, the story does not end there. Pond Life 2 An adventure in Brazil in which Frank and Yvon literally discover a skeleton in a cupboard. It leads them to the villainous Popov, whom Colin ‘sends into space'. Olivia puts her foot down and insists the magic phoenix bookmark allows her family a proper holiday this time. An Emu on Ice An adventure in northern Greenland. Colin, Frank, Braine and Perkins plus M after a skidoo race foil Russian plans to claim a steep rocky island. Then, posing as Stalin, Colin boards a Russian submarine to rescue Yvon yet again. He gives orders for the submarine to return home. Mission accomplished! The Bridge of Spies In this adventure Colin and M thwart the plans of the evil Stasi chief Colonel Schickelgruber. First they rescue Yvon (yet again!), and then save a British scientist as she crosses the Glienicke Bridge to freedom, but the magic phoenix bookmark does not return Colin and company home yet. The Berlin Wall Game Colin and co. once more foil Colonel Schickelgruber. By means of an attack on one of the watchtowers of the Berlin Wall during a snowstorm they smuggle two fugitives into the safety of the American controlled zone of the city. As usual M is on his best form, though not on his best behaviour, as he cannot resist German sausages! The Gnome of Zurich During a teddy bear festival in the city of Zurich Colin and M together with Frank and Co. thwart a plot by the Deputy Police Commissioner to steal important information from a bank vault. Yvon disguises himself as a giant teddy bear, and M causes all sorts of fireworks. Red Emu In 1917 Moscow Colin and M rescue Yvon's grandparents, and M causes chaos at the Lubyanka Prison. As Lenin, the revolutionary leader makes a speech in Red Square, he is mimicked by an emu, who eventually provides F for Frank and his agents with some unique souvenirs.

Book Fiscal Consolidation in the Euro Crisis

Download or read book Fiscal Consolidation in the Euro Crisis written by Kai Guthmann and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-12 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on if and why, between 2009 and 2015, European governments succeeded or failed in initiating and actually realizing some of the farthest-reaching austerity plans in modern history. The author analyzes the economic and political context and the underlying causes of austerity and economic adjustment packages during the Euro crisis. In doing so, he shows that austerity has its roots in an institutional mismatch between capitalist diversity in the Eurozone on the one hand, and an ill-conceived common economic regime on the other. In this context, austerity trumped politics, and even democracy itself. The book will appeal to scholars of political science and comparative political economy, as well as governmental policymakers and practitioners in the finance sector.

Book Uncommon Ground

  • Author : Veronica Strang
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2020-12-22
  • ISBN : 1000181359
  • Pages : 219 pages

Download or read book Uncommon Ground written by Veronica Strang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-22 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - What makes people care about the environment? - Why and how do different cultural groups value land in different ways? With increasing international concern about green issues, and the apparent failure of mechanistic solutions to complex problems, Uncommon Ground provides a timely understanding of the cultural values that underpin human-environmental relations. Through a comparison of two very different groups, the Aboriginal people and the white cattle farmers in Far North Queensland, Uncommon Ground explores how the human-environmental relationship is culturally constructed. This highly topical study also examines the long-term conflicts over land in Australia, which have brought to the surface each group's environmental values. The author considers how these values are acquired, and the universal and cultural factors that lead to their development. Major emphasis is put on the cultural forms that create and express environmental values for the Aborigines and the white pastoralists, such as: - historical background - land use and economic modes - socio-spatial organization - language, knowledge and methods of socialization - oral and visual representation - cosmological beliefs and systems of law This book is very accessible and should be widely used on anthropology, environmental studies and geography courses.]

Book Social Europe the Road not Taken

Download or read book Social Europe the Road not Taken written by Aurélie Dianara Andry and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the European Left's attempt to think and give shape to an alternative type of European integration-a 'social Europe'-during the long 1970s. Based on fresh archival material, it shows that the western European Left-in particular social democratic parties, trade unions, and to a lesser extent 'Eurocommunist' parties-formulated a project to turn 'capitalist Europe' into a 'workers' Europe'. This project favoured coordinated measures for wealth redistribution, market regulation, a democratisation of the economy and of European institutions, upward harmonisation of social and fiscal systems, more inclusive welfare regimes, guaranteed employment, economic and social planning with greater consideration for the environment, increased public spending to meet collective needs, greater control of capital flows and multinational corporations, a reduction in working time, and a fairer international economic order favouring the global south. During the pivotal years following 1968, deeply marked by labour militancy, new social movements, economic crisis, and the unmaking of the 'postwar compromise', a window of opportunity opened in which European integration could have taken different roads. The defeat of 'social Europe' was a result of a decade-long social conflict which ended with the affirmation of a neoliberal Europe. Investigating this forgotten struggle and the reasons of its defeat can be useful not just to scholars and students eager to understand the historical evolution of European integration, the European Left, and European capitalism, but also to anyone interested in building alternative European and global futures.

Book Thinking Revolution Through Film

Download or read book Thinking Revolution Through Film written by Hanno Berger and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to redefine the relationship between film and revolution. Starting with Hannah Arendt’s thoughts on the American and French Revolution, it argues that, from a theoretical perspective, revolutions can be understood as describing a relationship between time and movement and that ultimately the spectators and not the actors in a revolution decide its outcome. Focusing on the concepts of ‘time,’ ‘movement,’ and ‘spectators,’ this study develops an understanding of film not as a medium of agitation but as a way of thinking that relates to the idea of historicity that opened up with the American and French Revolution, a way of thinking that can expand our very notion of revolution. The book explores this expansion through an analysis of three audiovisual stagings of revolution: Abel Gance’s epic on the French Revolution Napoléon, Warren Beatty’s essay on the Russian Revolution Reds, and the miniseries John Adams about the American Revolution. The author thereby offers a fresh take on the questions of revolution and historicity from the perspective of film studies.
