Download or read book The Child in International Political Economy written by Alison M.S. Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-12-11 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering volume argues for the inclusion of children, and the structure known as ‘childhood’, as a permanent social category worthy of continued study within the discipline of international political economy (IPE). Fundamentally, and very simply, IPE is concerned with the dynamics of interaction across the economic and political domains; the relationship between the domestic and the international levels of analysis, and the role of the state. This book presents a convincing argument for the discussion of children within each of these areas. This volume: • provides the first book length examination of the child within IPE • draws on work from a variety of disciplines • brings rich analyses to debates about the role of the child in society Contributing insights that may be fundamental to the development of IPE as a discipline, The Child in International Political Economy will be vital reading to students and scholars of IPE, Childhood Studies, and International Relations.

Download or read book Regional Nonadjustment and Fiscal Policy written by Maurice Obstfeld and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How will countries handle idiosyncratic national macroeconomic shocks under the European single currency? The ways in which European countries now react to internally asymmetric shocks provide a better forecast than do the regional response pattern of the United States. In this paper we compare the US with Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and also with Canada, which is closer to European than the US is in its labor market and fiscal institutions. Europe's (and to some extent Canada's) model of regional response differs from that of the US. Changes in relative regional real exchange rates are general small. Outside of the US, however, there is more reliance on interregional transfer payments, less on labor migration, and the pace of regional adjustment appears slower. The regional adjustment patterns currently prevailing within European currency unions--characterized by limited labor mobility and price inflexibility--seem likely to prevail at the national level under the single currency. If EMU aims to attain the economic and social cohesion of its constituent nations, it therefore may be hard to resist the eventual extension of existing EU mechanisms of income redistribution--a transfer union. We propose an alternative strategy based on a relaxed stability pact, further strictures against central EU borrowing, labor market and fiscal reform, and the issuance by individual member states of debt indexed to nominal GDP.

Download or read book World Labour Report 2000 written by International Labour Office and published by International Labour Organization. This book was released on 2000 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing globalisation and trade liberalisation are creating greater insecurity for many income earners. This study examines the vital role played by social protection and health care in the event of old age, incapacity for work through sickness or accident, bearing and raising children, and unemployment. The report discusses the effects of rising unemployment and underemployment, and of labour market developments which have exposed a growing number of workers to low pay and precarious conditions Factors such as changing family structures and demographic trends are considered. The positive impact of social protection on the economy has often been neglected, the report says, and can be enhanced by better co-ordination between social protection, labour market and anti-poverty policies.
Download or read book Rules Reputation and Macroeconomic Policy Coordination written by David A. Currie and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-08-12 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book David Currie and Paul Levine address a broad range of issues concerning the design and conduct of macroeconomic policy in open economies. Adopting neo-Keynesian models for which monetary and fiscal policy have short-term real effects, they analyse active stabilisation policies in both a single- and multi-country context. Questions addressed include: the merits of simple policy rules, policy design in the face of uncertainty and international policy coordination. A central feature of the book is the treatment of credibility and the effect of a policy-maker's reputation for sticking to announced policies. These considerations are integrated with coordination issues to produce a unique synthesis. The volume develops optimal control methods and dynamic game theory to handle relationships between governments and a conscious rational private sector and produces a unified, coherent approach to the subject. This book will be of interest to students and teachers of open economy macroeconomics and to professional economists interested in using macroeconomic models to design policy.
