Book The Role of Employer Associations and Labour Unions in the EMU

Download or read book The Role of Employer Associations and Labour Unions in the EMU written by Gerhard Huemer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume recognises that in the course of European integration, national economic policy makers lose some effective policy instruments. Contributors to this omnibus volume analyse the 'room for maneuvering' available to national and EU economic and social policies under the conditions of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). They explore the possibilities for European coordination and discuss the tasks of employers’ associations and labour unions on the national and EU level in wage, employment and macroeconomic policies. Section 1 of the book deals with the strengths and weaknesses of the EU in the context of global competition. In spite of national differences, many of the EU member countries share important characteristics. Section 2 addresses the need for and the feasibility of policy coordination in the EMU. With the start of the EMU, wage policy will have to bear the main burden of absorbing asymmetrical economic shocks. The authors from the DIW argue that a wage policy favourable to economic growth, employment and convergence has to be guided by the inflation target set by the European Central Bank (ECB) and by the long-term increase of productivity in individual countries. A precondition for this kind of wage policy is coordination between the main actors of EU economic policy (ECB, EcoFin, social partners).

Book Labour Markets in EMU

Download or read book Labour Markets in EMU written by Giuseppe Bertola and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper reviews theoretical and empirical aspects of the interaction between Europe's Economic and Monetary Union and recent labour market developments. Policies meant to increase and stabilize labour incomes also tend to reduce employment and productivity, theory suggests that the latter effects should be sharper and more relevant within an integrated market area, making it harder for National policy makers to address the consequences of financial and other market imperfections. Empirical patterns of policy and outcome indicators in member and non-member countries of EMU are consistent with that theoretical mechanism. In the data, tighter economic integration is associated with better employment performance, substantial deregulation, sharper disemployment effects of remaining regulatory differences, and somewhat higher inequality and larger private financial market volume."--Publication information page.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Employment Relations

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Employment Relations written by Adrian Wilkinson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 886 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been numerous accounts exploring the relationship between institutions and firm practices. However, much of this literature tends to be located into distinct theoretical-traditional 'silos', such as national business systems, social systems of production, regulation theory, or varieties of capitalism, with limited dialogue between different approaches to enhance understanding of institutional effects. Again, evaluations of the relationship between institutions and employment relations have tended to be of the broad-brushstroke nature, often founded on macro-data, and with only limited attention being accorded to internal diversity and details of actual practice. The Handbook aims to fill this gap by bringing together an assembly of comprehensive and high quality chapters to enable understanding of changes in employment relations since the early 1970s. Theoretically-based chapters attempt to link varieties of capitalism, business systems, and different modes of regulation to the specific practice of employment relations, and offer a truly comparative treatment of the subject, providing frameworks and empirical evidence for understanding trends in employment relations in different parts of the world. Most notably, the Handbook seeks to incorporate at a theoretical level regulationist accounts and recent work that link bounded internal systemic diversity with change, and, at an applied level, a greater emphasis on recent applied evidence, specifically dealing with the employment contract, its implementation, and related questions of work organization. It will be useful to academics and students of industrial relations, political economy, and management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Advisory Committee on Statistical Information in the Economic and Social Spheres (CEIES) was created in 1992 with the explicit task of assisting the European Council and the Commission (i.e. Eurostat) in the coordination of the objectives of the EU statistical information policy, taking into account user requirements and the costs borne by the information producers. The CEIES is comparable to the statistical councils existing at the national level in that the majority of the members are 'independent' and appointed from among leading representatives of the various economic and social categories and scientific circles. ... This publication brings together the papers presented at the seminar, the proceedings of the discussions and the conclusions drawn by the chairman of the Subcommittee on social statistics, which organized the seminar.

Book EMU Challenges European Labor Markets

Download or read book EMU Challenges European Labor Markets written by Rüdiger Soltwedel and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the challenges that European Monetary Union (EMU) poses for European labor markets, emphasizing in particular the regional dimension of the European unemployment problem. The authors argue that the inability of labor markets to adjust to shocks is largely a regional problem within EMU member countries, requiring structural reforms to enhance labor market flexibility but also a decentralization of competencies and greater diversity of labor market outcomes. Any attempt to successfully reform European labor markets and “make them fit for EMU” has to take into account the regional–and even a more decentralized firm–perspective.
