Book The Maastricht Treaty Second Thoughts after 20 Years

Download or read book The Maastricht Treaty Second Thoughts after 20 Years written by Thomas Christiansen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maastricht Treaty, signed in 1992 and ratified in the following year, is widely seen as a landmark in the evolution of the European Union. It introduced into the treaty framework revolutionary new elements such as the co-decision procedure between the Council and the European Parliament, cooperation in the area of Justice and Home Affairs, the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the "euro" as a single currency for the majority of the then member states. It also introduced the concept of European citizenship into the treaty, reflecting the rising expectations of both citizens and decision-makers in the European project, and upgraded the role of the European Council at the summit of the EU’s institutional structure. Twenty years later, each of these innovations remain of central importance for the process of European integration, while current developments provide a valuable opportunity to reflect on the historical decisions taken in Maastricht in order to assess their significance and examine the subsequent evolution of the Union. This volume brings together an international group of leading scholars in the field in order to provide such an assessment, with each article both looking back over the developments within each of these domains as well as looking ahead to the way in which the EU is positioned to address current challenges. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of European Integration.

Book Making the EMU

Download or read book Making the EMU written by James D. Savage and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-12-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maastricht Treaty and the Stability Growth Pact demand that EU member states comply with their famous deficit and debt requirements of three and sixty per cent of GDP. Yet, how can the EU's leaders be certain that these targets are met? Is a three per cent deficit in Belgium equivalent to one in Italy or France? Making the EMU explores how the Treaty's budgetary surveillance procedure monitors member state budgetary policies, harmonizes their budgetary data, and effectively determines which member states qualified for member status and are subject to the Pact's sanctions. This book provides the first examination of how the EU entrusted the credibility of these critical budgetary figures to a relatively minor European Commission agency, and what effect the surveillance procedure has on the making of the EMU and the enforcement of Maastricht.

Book The creation of the European Monetary Union EMU

Download or read book The creation of the European Monetary Union EMU written by Ramona Kraft and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-04-16 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2006 in the subject Economics - Monetary theory and policy, grade: 1,4, Dublin City University (Business School), course: Course EU Politics, language: English, abstract: The creation of the European and Monetary Union (EMU) has been one of the most determined and successful projects carried out by the European Union (EU) – and it is still in progress since eleven EU-countries are, following the Maastricht treaty, legally required to join the Eurozone as soon as they meet the convergence criteria. The reasons for the creation of EMU have been widely discussed among scholars; some focus on the request for political integration that would resulted from an EMU, some claim that the EMU was established to promote growth and investment. The assignment will hence “discuss how the creation of EMU was both an economic and politically driven process”. Chapter 1 outlines events and agreements which indirectly led to the EMU. Chapter 2 assesses the Delors Report and the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) which affect EMU directly . Chapter 3 concludes by analysing the mentioned 30-year process leading to the EMU and gives a brief outlook. This approach has been chosen because it is essential to study the historical events leading to the Delors Report and finally the Treaty on European Union (TEU) in order to analyse the creation of EMU.

Book Economic Policy in EMU

Download or read book Economic Policy in EMU written by Marco Buti and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of the third and final phase of European and Monetary Union (EMU), the debate over European monetary unification is at the top of the political and economic agenda. Much has been written over the past five years about whether EMU is justified given the various expected benefitsand prospective costs, but there has been little detailed material on how EMU will work and what the practical implications of it will be for Europe as a whole. Economic Policy in EMU is a comprehensive look at the mechanisms involved, likely effects on monetary and budgetary policy, and the ways in which monetary union will deal with and affect business cycles and regional differences. It combines rigorous analysis of how the European economy works withan insider view of how this will change after 1999: as such, it is vital reading for all involved in the most important topic facing Europe today.
