Download or read book Empty Nest Empty Desk What s Next written by Dr. Rita Smith and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baby Boomer women are the first generation of women to retire from professional career roles. These women were uniquely born into a generation known for breaking down traditional societal barriers and searching for personal fulfillment. They pioneered their entrance into the male-dominated professional workplace and persevered to levels of unprecedented success. These are strong, bright women. So why wouldn’t retirement be an easy transition for them? Unfortunately, these trailblazing women are ill prepared for the psychological challenges of retirement, and there are no roadmaps and few female role models to guide them. Dr. Rita Smith interviewed over 200 Baby Boomer professional women, and found a common experience among them—being unprepared for “retirement shock.” Empty Nest, Empty Desk, What’s Next? shares these women’s stories, their challenges, and their successes. The book also includes a Boomer Retirement Re-Imagined Roadmap© which, along with interactive exercises, provide the missing guidance and support to help Baby Boomer professional women reinvent a retirement that works!

The contents unleash a host of funny and painful memories. As she examines each item, she contemplates the realities of public school and the remarkable young people whose lives had intersected with hers. She reveals hilarious tales of teenage recklessness as well as the dark and dangerous secrets she has kept over the years. The triumphs and tragedies of some of her most memorable students are powerful testaments to the resilience of the human spirit, but no secret is more intriguing than that of Jordan Michaels, one unforgettable and heroic student. In an era of increasing scrutiny of public education and a growing emphasis on test results and statistics, Empty Desk is a book that captures the vulnerability of students and their teachers. It is about telling their stories, hearing the voices of others, surviving against all odds, and discovering ourselves.

Book excerpt: Most people who have only been on the customer side of the retail counter have no idea what sales clerks and others in retail go through on a daily basis. But they should. After all, it's hard to be empathetic when you have never walked the walk. In Retail: The Other Side of the Counter, author David Childers gives every customer this opportunity. Reflecting on his many decades spent in the retail industry, he shows through humorous examples that most retail workers are hard working individuals, not servants for customers to belittle. By pointing out humorous and outrageous examples from his own experiences, Childers hopes that you, the customer, will take a kinder eye towards the person serving you. For the retail or service employee, he hopes to put a smile on your face, and get a nod of approval when you say, "Oh yeah. I've been there."

Book excerpt: Ciro is one among three thousand doomed to die on September 11th, 2001. It seems useless to describe my moment of death, because it didnt feel final, even when I lost my footing, slipped, and free-fell to the street. It seemed to happen in slow motion, as I hovered above my body and watched it fall. The enchanting voice that seemed to whisper my name was now visible a gossamer shape in a silver dress that waved in the wind. She smiled at me. And before she could speak, I realized who she was this was my guardian angel. In Heaven, Ciro is enlightened by the teachings and lost parables of Christ words the author believes were divinely delivered to him. He, in turn, shares them with you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times–bestselling author, a thrilling true crime story of grisly murder, police corruption, and an attorney’s work to save an innocent man. In 1963, Emily Hoffert and Janice Wylie were just two young women living on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Then one muggy day in August, an intruder made his way into their apartment where he raped and murdered them. Months passed before the police had a suspect in custody. His name was George Whitmore Jr., a nineteen-year-old Black man with an IQ of less than 70. After giving a confession, Whitmore was convicted and incarcerated, but Asst. DA Mel Glass was not so certain of the young man’s guilt . . . In Echoes of My Soul, bestselling author and renowned prosecutor Robert K. Tanenbaum delves into the historic case of the “Career Girls Murders.” He examines the brutal crime and the troubling investigation, full of law enforcement missteps and cover-ups. The author also details the story of an ADA who placed his career on the line to free an innocent man whose story would ultimately go on to influence the American justice system. “A strong candidate to become a true crime classic. . . . Brilliantly written and unfailingly riveting.” —Vincent Bugliosi, author and prosecutor of the Manson Family Tate–LaBianca murders “Echoes of My Soul has the excitement of a great work of fiction and it is not ‘based’ upon a real case. It is a real case and it is about a real hero.” —Mark Lane, attorney and civil rights activist “A compelling, page turning, disturbing true story.” —Jesse Choper, Earl Warren Professor of Public Law, Emeritus, University of California, Berkeley

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this mesmerizing debut, a competition between two magicians becomes a star-crossed love story. The circus arrives at night, without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within nocturnal black and white striped tents awaits a unique experience, a feast for the senses, where one can get lost in a maze of clouds, meander through a lush garden made of ice, stand awestruck as a tattooed contortionist folds herself into a small glass box, and gaze in wonderment at an illusionist performing impossible feats of magic. Welcome to Le Cirque des Rêves. Beyond the smoke and mirrors, however, a fierce competition is underway - a contest between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood to compete in "a game," in which each must use their powers of illusion to best the other. Unbeknownst to them, this game is a duel to the death, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will.

Book Listening to children in vulnerable situations

Download or read book Listening to children in vulnerable situations written by Silke Daelman and published by Gompel&Svacina. This book was released on 2022-06-03 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation’s purpose is to concretise pedagogical concepts that help us think about the voices and positions of children in vulnerable situations in contemporary contexts of educating and researching. What matters when thinking about children’s voices, roles and positions in pedagogical and research spaces entangled with our own roles, positions and ethics? This doctoral study is built around four intra-active encounters within pedagogical spaces in Flanders where we bring in a posthuman reconceptualisation of voice to understand and value the entangled, collective and supported ways in which children become present in research. Each intra-active encounter sheds light on methodological and ethico-epistemo-ontological aspects of assembling children’s (posthuman) voices in research and possible creative and participatory ways of doing so. We describe five helpful movements when engaging with and listening to children in intra-active pedagogical and research encounters. Five movements that concretise listening to children’s voices in vulnerable situations and have the potential to transform an encounter into intra-active encounters of genuinely listening. This dissertation will be thought-provoking for practitioners in education and welfare contexts as well as for students and researchers that have the intention of doing research with (vulnerable) children in pedagogical contexts.
