Book Rehabilitation of Street Children in Kenya

Download or read book Rehabilitation of Street Children in Kenya written by John Kabutha Mugo and published by Iko. This book was released on 2004 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reality of children working and living on the streets has posed a great challenge in Kenya. Scholars have made efforts to explain why it occurs and what might be done about the situation through various studies and research projects. However, research with these children has so far been centered mainly on the causal factors and the nature and impact of life on the streets, through bibliographic details. This book offers an analysis of present interventions. Through qualitative social research, the author focuses on the dynamics in the educational rehabilitation of children working and living on the streets of Kenya. John Kabutha Mugo studied music education at Kenyatta University in Kenya and education for children with special needs at the University of Hannover, where he was awarded a doctorate. He has written about children, child labor, and violation of children's rights.

Book Street Children in Kenya

Download or read book Street Children in Kenya written by Philip L. Kilbride and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-03-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As kinship relationships and support networks across family lines weaken with modernization, economic stressors take a great toll on children. Kenya, like some other nations in Africa and around the globe, has witnessed a rapid rise in street children. The street children in Nairobi come from single parent families which are mostly headed by women. Another group are AIDS orphans. This study documents how street children in Nairobi follow survival strategies including (for boys) collecting garbage, and (for girls), prostitution. Gender is emphasized throughout the book. Although impoverished families are the most likely to produce street children, not all poor families have their children on the streets. The problem of street children is a complex one that calls for a comprehensive and coordinated policy and program for intervention at all levels and in all sectors of society. Alleviating poverty and rebuilding the family institution should be among the first steps in addressing the problem.

Book Violence against Children in Kenya

Download or read book Violence against Children in Kenya written by Alphonce C. L. Omolo and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2014 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children in Kenya continue to suffer diverse types of violence against them despite the fact that Kenyan laws are prohibiting violence and various prevention measures exist. In order to achieve effective prevention of violence, adequate knowledge of risk factors is imperative. In Kenya, such knowledge is lacking and there is limited attention given to the multifaceted nature of the social environment in which children grow up and how such environments aggravate violence against children as well as hinder prevention measures. This qualitative research applied the ecological model of socialisation of Urie Bronfenbrenner as its theoretical and analytical framework in examining risk factors and consequences, responses and projects. In assessing what is being done to prevent violence against children in Kenya, the author reviews existing projects and policies that shape prevention measures including the possible influence of international conventions. He also analyses diverse sets of ideas, attitudes, philosophies and practices that explain the similar and the different notions of childhood in African and in Western settings. Exploring the social construction of violence, the author examines ideas and discourses that explain the heterogeneous characteristics of violence and how their understanding, occurrence and severity vary from culture to culture. Alphonce C. L. Omolo (born 1966 in Kisumu, Kenya) studied Childhood (Sociology of Childhood and Children's Rights) at the Institute of Education, University of London. He completed his doctoral degree (Dr. phil.) at the Faculty for Philosophy and Educational Research in the Field of Comparative Education at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, in 2014. He has extended experience and worked in different capacities in street children and other children's programmes in Kenya and Tanzania between 1987 and 2010.

Book Street Children and Homeless Youth

Download or read book Street Children and Homeless Youth written by Lewis Aptekar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-18 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with street children who live in the developing world, and homeless youth who are from the developed world. They are referred to as children in street situations (CSS) to show that the problem is both in the children and in the situation they face. The book examines several aspects of the children and their street situations, including the families of origin and the homes they leave, the children’s social life, and mental health. Other aspects are the problems of published demographics, the construction of public opinion about these children and the, often violent, reactions from authorities. The book then discusses current research on children in street situations, as well as programs and policies. The book ends with recommendations about programs, policies and research.

Book The Global Victimization of Children

Download or read book The Global Victimization of Children written by Clayton A. Hartjen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-12 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the concept of child victimization in all its facets. Millions of young people throughout the world face violence, sexual, physical, and emotional abuse and exploitation on a daily basis. The worldwide victimization of young people can be prevented, or, at least, its incidence can be greatly reduced, if purposeful action is taken to do so. This volume researches and documents some of the ways in which young people throughout the world are victimized, and suggests strategies for preventing various forms of child vistimization. Eight distinct forms of victimization are identified and analyzed in detail. Included are discussions on child prostitution and pornography, economic exploitation through child labor and trafficking, physical and other abuse inflicted on young people in schools and other institutions, the use of children as armed combatants, and the denial of the basic needs and rights of children to such things as home and to education. In each chapter the authors discuss the nature of the victimization, its global dimensions and prevalence, and the measures governments and/or others are taking, or failing to take, to combat the harm based on the concept that youth victimization is a form of government crime.

Book Children s Lives in an Era of Children s Rights

Download or read book Children s Lives in an Era of Children s Rights written by Afua Twum-Danso Imoh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-03 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), which was adopted unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989, marked a turning point in the perception of children in international law and policy. Although it was hoped that the Convention would have a significant and positive impact on the lives of all children, this has not happened in many parts of the world. This edited volume, based on empirical research and Non-Governmental Organisation project data, explores the progress of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and to a lesser extent, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, in nine African countries in the 25 years since it was adopted by the UN General Assembly. The book considers the implementation of the Convention both in terms of policy and practice, and its impact on the lived experiences of children in societies across the continent, focusing on specific themes such as HIV/AIDS, education and disability, child labour, witchcraft stigmatisation, street children, parent-child relationships and child participation. The book breaks new ground in blending legal and social perspectives of the experiences of children, and identifies concrete ways forward for the better implementation of the CRC treaty in the various political contexts that exist in Africa.
