Book excerpt: India is a home to the largest population of poor in the world and out of its total population there are nearly 75 million poor house-holds in India, thus it has become the prime obligation of the regulators to provide some definite solution for poverty alleviation. Microfinance has several other developmental objectives like mobilization of savings. It has also been used as inducers in different community development activities as an entry point in the community organizing program and as an ingredient in a larger education or training exercise. For this study, population consist of clients of micro financing institutions in Changanacherry Taluk. In this study for the purpose of primary data collection, samples were selected by using random sampling technique. Sample size for the study conducted is 100 respondents of micro financing institutions. The study consists of both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected through questionnaire. The role of Micro Financing Institutions in economic empowerment with special reference to Changanacherry taluk was examined. Key challenges facing MFIs today that are affecting their impact on poverty alleviation were seem to be an over-emphasis on financial sustainability over social objectives, and a failure of many MFIs to work with the poorest in society. Overall, Micro financing institutions has provided important contributions to the development world. It was found that savings are vital and perhaps more important to people, that they are probably better served by direct subsidies rather than loans. Although micro financing institutions offer financial assistance to the society and prove itself a useful tool in economic empowerment.

In Growth and Empowerment, Nicholas Stern, Jean-Jacques Dethier, and F. Halsey Rogers propose a new strategy for development. Drawing on many years of work in development economics—in academia, in the field, and at international institutions such as the World Bank—the authors base their strategy on two interrelated approaches: building a climate that encourages investment and growth and at the same time empowering poor people to participate in that growth. This plan differs from other models for development, including the dogmatic approach of market fundamentalism popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Stern, Dethier, and Rogers see economic development as a dynamic process of continuous change in which entrepreneurship, innovation, flexibility, and mobility are crucial components and the idea of empowerment, as both a goal and a driver of development, is central. Book excerpt: The power granted to the courts, both in a nation’s constitution and in practice, reveals much about the willingness of the legislative and executive branches to accept restraints on their own powers. For this reason, an independent judiciary is considered an indication of a nation’s level of democracy. Vineeta Yadav and Bumba Mukherjee use a data set covering 159 developing countries, along with comparative case studies of Brazil and Indonesia, to identify the political conditions under which de jure independence is established. They find that the willingness of political elites to grant the courts authority to review the actions of the other branches of government depends on the capacity of the legislature and expectations regarding the judiciary’s assertiveness. Moving next to de facto independence, Yadav and Mukherjee bring together data from 103 democracies in the developing world, complemented by case studies of Brazil, India, and Indonesia. Honing in on the effects of electoral institutions, the authors find that, when faced with short time horizons, governments that operate in personal vote electoral systems are likely to increase de facto judicial independence whereas governments in party-centered systems are likely to reduce it.
